Chapter 42: All I ever wanted to do
Kelsey's POV
*****
"Kelsey," my dad said as he came up to us, making Ethan and I quickly break apart. I couldn't help but feel slightly flustered at having my dad seeing Ethan and I that way. We were a close pair, and we were both able to talk about anything with each other, including relationships. Nonetheless, I still found it slightly awkward to be all touchy with Ethan in front of my father, whom I hadn't yet told about the relationship.
"I'm really glad you got this job," he sincerely said as soon as he had my utmost attention. "You found a lot of people who care about you, I've honestly never seen you this happy since you were a little lady."
"Yeah, I guess I was luck, wasn't I?" I said, smiling at Ethan who was already smiling at me.
"I got you a present, I have to get going soon so I'd like it if you opened it," my dad said before handing me a gift bag.
"Dad, you didn't have to get me anything else, mom's locket is beyond perfect," I said, running a finger over the locket.
"I know, but that locket was your mom's present to you, this one's mine," he said, before nodding towards the bag, urging me to open it.
I finally gave in, opening the gift bag and unwrapping the gift inside of it, a lump forming in my throat as soon as I saw what it was.
"Dad!" I exclaimed. "Where did you get this?" I asked as I looked at the frame photo of my mom, my dad, and I, with huge, gleeful smiles on our faces.
"I found it on my old camera and decided to get it framed for you, thought you'd like it," he said.
I shook away the tears forming in my eyes at the view of my mother's beautiful face. Looking at her you wouldn't have been able to tell the pain she was going through in that exact moment. She tried so hard to hide it all from me, and the thought of the huge sacrifices she made for me made my love for her increase.
"I love it! Thank you daddy," I said, hugging him tightly.
"You're welcome princess, but now I'm afraid I have to go, I have to go to an interview tomorrow," he said with an excited grin.
I was truly happy at the fact that he was able to get that interview. He had been looking for a better paying job for ages, and he finally managed to find one which was perfect for him. Not only was he going to be able to showcase his talents, but he was going to be payed so much more than he had been before.
"It's fine dad, see you," I said as I gave him one last huge hug, feeling blessed to have a father like him.
I looked at my father's retreating back as he made his way out, before Ellie came up to me, poking my sides.
"Kelsey, it's time for you to open your presents, and then we eat cake!" She excitedly said, her eyes lighting up as soon as she mentioned cake.
"Okay," I laughed as Ellie pushed me towards the presents table.
"Alright open mine first!" She said. "It's not anything expensive but I put a lot of effort into it," she said, hanging her head down as soon as I took the bag from her hands which held a lovely picture which she drew. It was a picture of me holding her in my arms, with Ethan, Noah, and Lara all next to us. She drew us all in stick figures, but I still found it cute and thoughtful.
"Aww, Ellie, this is wonderful, thank you. I am going to frame this and put it up in my room for sure!" I said, hugging her. She smiled and blushed at my words, happiness and relief evident in her features.
"It's my turn now!" Lara excitedly said as she handed me her gift bag.
I smiled as soon as I opened it, revealing a book which I had been dying to read for ages, 'The fault in our stars'. I had never told anybody about how much I wanted it, and I couldn't understand how Lara knew. Sad movies weren't my favourite, but when that sad movie is based on a story written by John Green, one of my favourite authors, one can't not love it. I was broken hearted throughout the movie, but it also taught me a lot of valuable things in life.
"I noticed how much you loved the movie, and I also know how much you like to read, so I asked your dad if you have one like it when we called him to come and he said that you didn't, so I bought it for you with my own pocket money," she said with a smile.
"Aww Lara, I love it. Thank you baby," I said, hugging her.
It was crazy just how attentive to detail the kid was. I only watched that movie about five times for as long as I had been in the house, and for her to notice my love for it was just crazy.
"I got you a present too!" Aaron said, handing me a wrapped present. I looked at him before taking the gift from his hands, opening it to reveal a cute black backpack with flowerd embroidered on it. "You've always been so obsessed with backpacks, so I thought why not get you one," he said, nervously scratching the back of his neck.
"Thank you Aaron," I said, appreciating the fact that he had remembered that detail about me. I could hear Ethan coughing from behind me, making me turn to look at him.
"Erm, I got you something too," he said as soon as he noticed me looking at him. My mouth partly opened as I shook my head, unable to believe the guy. He had done so much for me, and there he was, telling me that he had another gift for me.
"Another thing? Ethan, you've already done enough," I said, honestly not wanting him to spend any more money on me.
"I know, but I wanted to do more," he said before handing me an envelope.
My eyes widened at the amount of money which was in the envelope, right before looking back up to him. "Money?"
"I was thinking about what you told me that day about your financial issues, and I wanted to give you some of that to give to your dad. He's a great man," he said.
"Eth, I can't take this. I'm working for a reason," I said, shaking my head as I tried handing him the envelope back.
"I know, but consider it a birthday present that, like, grandmas give," he insisted. "Please."
His eyes were pleading, urging me to take the money that he was offering me. I shook my head once more, reluctantly nodding my head with a sigh.
"Thank you," I said as I hugged the truly amazing, kind-hearted guy in front of me.
"Kels, you're forgetting something?" Meg grinned, wiggling her eyes at me, reminding me of the gift I had prepared for Ethan.
"Oh yeah, Ethan, I have something for you," I excitedly said. "It's at Meg's house. I'll get it later," I said, making him looking at me with raised eyebrows, clearly not having been expecting anything from me on my own birthday.
After the party, Meg and I headed to her house to be able to get Ethan's surprise, and my heart was beating out of its chest as I stopped in front of the front door of the house, the surprise in my hands. I didn't know how Ethan was going to take it, or if he even was going to accept it. All I hoped was that it would make him happy.
I walked upstairs to his room, hiding the gift behind my back as best as I could as I asked him to close his eyes, which he quickly obliged to. "So, Leah and Meg helped me to get your present and I thought you'd like it," I said before I told him to open his eyes, right as soon as I showed him what I was hiding, his eyes growing wide.
"Oh my god, Kelsey," he breathlessly said as he stared at the small, shihtzu puppy which was in my arms. "And you said I'm amazing?" He said before placing the puppy on the bed so he could engulf me in a hug.
"So I guess you like it?" I asked happily.
"Like it? I love it," he said. "What's his name?" He asked as he took the puppy in his hands.
"Her name. And I was thinking you name him since she's your dog," I said.
I didn't find it fair for me to name him when the dog was supposed to be for Ethan. I wanted him to have full possession of the dog, including being the one to choose what to call him.
"He's our dog," he said making me smile, before continuing with what he was saying. "and I think we should call her Elsey."
"Elsey?" I asked, finding the choice of name quite a strange one.
"Yeah, it's stands for both Ellie's nickname, and Kelsey plus Ethan. It's our ship name," he grinned.
"So you want to name the dog our ship name? What if we break up, you'd hate it," I said, the thought of us breaking up making me shudder.
He chuckled before talking, taking my hands into his. "Okay, first, I'll make sure that we don't break up, second, it's a nice name, and Ellie would like to have a dog named after her," he continued.
"If it makes you happy," I shrugged.
"Nope, you make me happy."
"Cheesy, I like it," I grinned before he shook his head at me and engulfed me in another hug, bringing me down on the bed with him as the puppy got on top of us.
"Oh my gosh is that a puppy?!" Lara squealed, stopping in the door frame.
"Yep, Kelsey got it for us," Ethan said, sitting up and fixing his messy hair.
"Wow, Kelsey thanks!" She says as she took the puppy. "I love it," she says with tears in her eyes.
"Lara has always wanted a dog, she loved Bradley a lot too and cried nonstop when he died," Ethan explained.
I could feel my heart tighten at the pain that little girl must have had to go through because of Bradley's death. That was mainly the reason why I wanted to get Ethan a dog. I know how much Zack's actions had made him suffer, and I hoped that maybe a dog could help him. At first I feared that he wouldn't accept it, feeling as if he were betraying Bradley, but I was more than happy when he did.
I was glad that I made them happy, because that was all I had ever wanted to do.
