Chapter 244
300 hundred thouâ Aurelia felt as if she had been hit on the head and could not find her words.
âMy mom should have told you that she used to be in business and has a good head for it. She made some investments, and this necklace is one of them. It was meant to be a gift for her future daughter- inâlaw.â
âNo, this is too expensive. Iâll return it to you when I get back from work,â Aurelia insisted.
She merely considered Leslie a roommate. She couldnât possibly accept such an extravagant gift from him.
âWhy?â Leslie hesitated.
Since he had learned about Aureliaâs financial struggles and understood her need for money, it seemed logical for her to desire it.
Hence, he couldnât understand why she would turn down an expensive gift.
âMr. Synder, this is what mom bought for her future daughterâinâlaw,â Aurelia said solemnly.
âArenât you her daughterâinâlaw?â Leslie replied, his breath catching unexpectedly.
Words slipped out without him realizing.
Aureliaâs cheeks heated up. Amidst the silence, she heard Leslieâs slightly uneven breathing.
Did he know what he was saying?
Aurelia pursed her lips and said softly, âWhere should I put it? I donât have a safe.â
Leslie couldnât help but suppress a laugh. âYou didnât deny it.â
Flustered, she said, âIâm busy. Iâll hang up.â
Leslie stopped her, âThereâs a safe in the study.â
âOh.â
Aurelia hung up abruptly, Touching her warm cheeks, she took a few moments to regain her composure before returning to her office.
Her colleagues gathered around.
âAurelia, is your husband that wealthy?â
âNo, itâs my motherâinâlaw who made money from her past investments. She lent it for me to wear.â
Aurelia didnât want rumors to spread that Leslie was a wealthy secondâgeneration, so it was better to clarify things early.
Linda had visited the office before, and her demeanor was far from ordinary.

Her previous business ventures and a collection justified such a purchase.
Everyone knew their roles between a motherâinâlaw and a daughterâinâlaw.
Upon hearing that Aurelia was just borrowing it, the curiosity of the colleagues diminished.
âWell, thatâs good. Iâve never worn anything so expensive in my life.â
âAurelia, can you show it to us?â
Aurelia intended to refuse, but had to nod as they wouldnât give up otherwise. âOkay.â
Fortunately, everyone understood the value of the necklace and didnât dare to touch it. After a brief look, they dispersed.
Aurelia quickly placed the box into her purse.
Millie still hadnât returned for the rest of the day and no one knew where she went.
Kimberly, on the other hand, received a phone call and left during lunch break.
Aurelia took out her lunch box and went to nap after finishing her food. However, upon remembering that she had something valuable in her purse, she held her purse as she fell asleep.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated. She was shocked when she saw the caller ID.
âMrs. Parker? Whatâs wrong?â
âAurelia, Iâm at the lobby of your office building. I canât reach Millie. Sheâs close with you, so can you help finding her?â
It was Millieâs mother.
Aurelia had gone to Millieâs house to dine with them before. Mrs. Parker had been extremely kind to her and even called from time to time to check on her when her mother fell ill.
Aurelia immediately got up and went downstairs. She immediately spotted Mrs. Parker standing helplessly in the lobby.
âMrs. Parker.â
âAurelia, youâre finally here. Can you tell me what exactly is going on with Millie lately? Why did she borrow so much money?â Mrs. Parker sobbed.
âShe borrowed money?â Aurelia asked
