Chapter 188
My Mute Bride
Over the next three days, she only went to the hospital, work, and home. Rachel made different soups and different dishes for Charlotte every day too.
Frankie placed three files on Justinâs desk. âPresident Burton, these are the candidates for Charlotteâs nanny. Please take a look.â
Justin skimmed through the files. âTheyâre the best you got?â
âTheyâre professionals in the industry. Experienced and responsible.â
âDenied.â Justin pushed the file back.
âDenied?â Frankie took the files from him. âThis one has been working in the industry for fifteen years, and she has never received a single negative review. Sheâs experienced, and sheâs a good cook. Why not?â
âNot educated enough,â Justin answered.
Not educated enough? Frankie couldnât believe what he was hearing. âPresident Burton, weâre not looking for a tutor. Weâre looking for a nanny. What does education have to do with this?â
âYouâre the average of the five people you spend time with the most, get it?â
âWhat about this one, then? Sheâs a graduate from an overseas home economics university. And one of the best ones at that. They specialize in this field, so maybe she can change Charlotte for the better.â
âShe doesnât have a kid of her own. How can she even take care of someone elseâs?â
âWhat about this one? She has her own children, plus sheâs experienced and well educated. The best of both worlds. And she has the best reviews out of the three.â Frankie looked at Justin, expecting him to agree.
A while later, Justin said, âShe doesnât have the looks.â
What in the world? Thatâs a criterion too? Frankie was about to break down. âTell me what you want then, President Burton. Iâll look for the one you want.â
Justin answered, âI want her to be about five feet five, not older than thirty years old, and a graduate from the top five institutions in Riverdale. Aside from being a nanny, I want her to have her own job, preferably the best in the industry. Also, she needs to be a Riverdale local.â
Frankie scratched his head and answered carefully, âUhm, isnât that the madam youâre talking about?â
Justin frowned in surprise.
Rachel went back to her office after the morning meeting was done, and she saw Frankie standing up.
âFrankie? What brings you here?â
âMadam.â
Rachel paused. âDonât call me that anymore. The divorce happened six years ago.â She lamented her past whenever she met someone who used to be in it, though it was the first time she met Frankie alone after she started working. âDo you need anything?â
âPresident Burton asked me to see you,â Frankie answered politely. âHeâs going on a business trip, but he hasnât found any replacement for the last nanny. He wants to ask you if you can take care of Charlotte for a few days.â
âMe?â Rachel thought she heard it wrongly. âHe told you that? He wants me to take care of Charlotte?â
Frankie nodded. âI wonât joke about this. President Burton knows heâs wronged you, so please donât refuse. For the sake of Charlotte, at least.â
Rachel thought about it. Even if Charlotte wasnât there, she wouldnât let this perfect opportunity slide.
After all, it wasnât everyday heâd go on a business trip. âIâm fine with it.â
Frankie broke into a smile. âAlright. Iâll tell him about the good news, then.â
After Frankie was gone, Rachel dropped her smile, though it was replaced by a look of hurry. Jolly told her the phosphor wouldnât last long, so Rachel had to crack the code ASAP and take what she needed from the safe box.
Charlotte was discharged that afternoon, so Rachel went to the hospital to take her home. But before she entered the room, she heard Charlotte shouting, âNo! I donât want to go with you! Let me go!â
âCharlotte, be a good girl and come with me, alright?â
âNo! I donât wanna.â
âCharlotte, your fatherâs going on a business trip, and you donât have a nanny to take care of you.
Whoâs going to look after you if you arenât coming with me?â
âMy mommy will!â
âYour mommy? You shouldnât go with her, Charlotte. If you keep talking about her, your fatherâs going to get annoyed and leave you behind.â
Rachel would never forget that voice no matter where she went. Her heart sank, and she went inside without any hesitation. âThreatening a child, huh, Sue? Guess thatâs how adults work around here,â she mocked Sue the very moment she entered, her voice clear and firm.
Charlotte wobbled over to her mother right after Rachel came in. âMommy! Great-aunt Sue and the bad guys want to take me away.â She sobbed.
âDonât cry, Charlotte. I wonât let anyone take you away.â
Sueâs face fell. âWhat makes you think you can say that? Just because you ran away for a few years and changed your name? That doesnât change the fact that youâre just a lowly peasant.â
âSue, itâs been five years, but that doesnât change the fact that youâre still as unkind as you were.â
âThatâs just the truth. I know why youâre back, but you can forget about it. Justin and Amber are engaged. Youâre just going to be a homewrecker if you get between them.â
âHm, if I recall, I was married to Justin back then, but still you specifically asked Amber to be the homewrecker. Didnât see you defending me back then.â
âWhy you littleâ¦â Sue snapped. âYouâd better know your place, Rachel. Just because you can talk now doesnât mean you can disrespect me. Guards!â Sue shouted, and two bodyguards quickly came in.
âToss her out! Charlotte, youâre coming with me.â
âMommy!â Charlotte hugged Rachelâs neck, her pretty little face pale from the shock.
Rachel hugged the girl tightly. âTouch me and youâre getting it.â
She was holding Justinâs daughter and the only heir to Burton Group, so nobody dared to make a move.
âWhat are you scared of? Sheâs just one girl!â Sue was furious. âIf none of you are doing it, I will!â She went to take Charlotte away.
But before she could, Rachel shoved her back, and she fell down. âOuch! You b*tch!â She gasped painfully âWhat are you doing, Mom?â Julian stood at the doorstep, asking in disbelief.
Sue was stunned, and she looked up just to see her son glaring at her. âMom. I told you to never harass Rachel anymore. What are you doing?â
âJulian, ⦠I didnât do anything. Didnât you see? This damn woman pushed me! You canât date her!
Sheâll kill me one of these days.â
