Chapter 26
All Our Tomorrows (The Heirs Book 1)
Chase walked into his house shortly after noon.
He dropped his keys and wallet on his kitchen island and stripped off his clothes on the way to his shower.
He was exhausted and emotionally hammered from the roller coaster of emotions heâd gone through in the last twenty-four hours. Sleeping on Piperâs couch hadnât helped.
But damn, he was happy.
By the time heâd climbed into the back of an Uber to come home, he and Piper had secured their first official date for the following Saturday.
Now all he needed to do was come up with something epic.
After his shower, he tossed on a pair of sweatpants and grabbed his phone.
Heâd put Alex off long enough.
She answered before the first ring had a chance to end. âI was about to call out search and rescue.â
âMy text last night said Iâd call when I could. Thatâs now.â
Alex blew out a breath and paused. âI-I screwed up.â
Understatement.
âIâm sorry.â
âGood. Now we can get somewhere.â Not that Chase doubted they would. He and his sister were tight, and he never wanted that to change.
âI shouldnât have said anything to Piper.â
Chase pulled a bottle of water out of his refrigerator and took it to his sofa. He wasnât going to beat his sister up over the should haves and could haves. But he did need to set her straight on a few things. âI turn thirty-three this year. And at my age, I know the difference between someone I want to pass my time with and someone I might have a future with. Do you really believe that I would risk everything weâre trying to do at Stone Enterprises with a fling?â
He heard her release a long-suffering sigh. âNo. I couldnât see past the things that can go wrong.â
âYou and Piper are exactly the same in that. What if it doesnât work out? What if we ask her to leave? How will the other employees react to us dating? And believe me, she has a whole slew of what-ifs you havenât considered.â
âChaseââ
âWeâve both fought this attraction, but that ends now. I care for her, Alex.â
âI can hear that in your voice and see it in your eyes. Iâm so sorry.â
âApology accepted. You donât need to say that again.â Chase took a drink of his water and then pulled out the bigger news. âYou trust me, right?â
âYou know I do.â
Should he beat around the bush? Make sure his sister was sitting down? Or just blurt it out?
âPiperâs pregnant.â
Blurting out won.
âWh-what?â
âFour months ago, she met someone. Remember when you and Nick went to Vegas last year?â Chase remembered all the juicy tales that Alex and Nick talked about after their sinful weekend with nameless men.
âYeah . . .â
âKinda like that. Only the condom malfunctioned.â
âOh my God. The crackers. Sheâs always eating crackers.â
âSheâs had morning sickness for weeks. Piper told me last night. While I attempted to ignore my attraction, she was more concerned about what people would say and assume if we started dating when the news of her pregnancy couldnât be hidden any longer.â
âOh, damn.â
âIt does complicate things a little.â
âA little?â Alex said with a laugh.
Maybe more than a little, but Chase wasnât going to concentrate on that now.
âShe plans on giving it up for adoption.â
âWait, what?â
Yeah, he wasnât excited about that thought. But it wasnât his decision, and unlike Piper, heâd only had a few hours to wrap his mind around where she was at.
âShe hasnât told anyone . . . except me. Iâm not a woman, but Iâve lived in a house with them my whole life. If sheâs anything like you and Mom, she could use a nonjudgmental ear.â Chase hoped his sister read between the lines.
âI canât imagine how sheâs feeling.â
âYou can a hell of a lot better than me. Due to the fact you both have a uterus.â
âSuddenly, just dating you doesnât feel like that big of a deal,â Alex said.
âIâm glad you see it that way. Right now, you and I are the only ones who know about this. Iâll tell Mom. But other than that, Piper will let people know when sheâs ready.â
âWow,â Alex said with a sigh. âSpeaking of moms . . . ours didnât come home last night.â
The water bottle stopped midway to Chaseâs lips. âGaylord?â
âYou have a better explanation?â
Chase felt the smile on his face grow. âWait . . . is Mom through menopause?â
âStop. That thought is not okay.â
âIt could happen.â
âStop,â Alex said a second time.
âIâm sure sheâs fine.â
He could tell by the way Alex groaned, she was concerned. âDo we have any news on Max?â
âNothing. Stuart is painfully silent. Iâm not sure heâs doing much of anything.â
âWhy didnât he insist on knowing Maxâs name the second he ended up in the will?â Alex asked.
âIf Dad didnât want to talk, he wouldnât. You know how he was.â
âArenât we getting the list of all Dadâs assets and bank accounts soon?â Alex asked.
âYeah,â Chase said. âWe need to go in this week and sign signature cards at the banks.â
âMaybe weâll find something Piper missed in the bank statements.â
âShe searched them better than we could.â
âTrue.â Alex paused. âItâs weird, isnât it? Knowing weâre inheriting everything and actually having access to it . . . theyâre different things.â
âHell yeah.â They were about to gain access to more money than they could count. And the responsibility that came with that wealth.
âPayroll is going to start cutting us checks. I told them to cut whatever Dad was making down the middle.â
Seemed unnecessary, but Chase knew how companies worked. Even though you owned the company, you needed to make a salary for the tax benefits. âWhat do you want to do with whatâs in the safe?â
âDamn, I almost forgot about that.â
âItâs not easily forgotten once you see it.â
âI donât need it sitting in my house, I donât have that kind of vault,â she said.
âSeems wrong to just leave everything in that house to be picked off by the Melissas out there.â
âI wonder if she knows about the safe room,â Alex said.
âIf she did, she wouldnât have lifted the watches that werenât even in a keyed drawer.â
âYouâre right.â Alex sighed. âI should probably see this thing.â
âYeah, itâs impressive. Between the cash and the guns, I wouldnât be surprised if we found a kilo of cocaine buried in there.â
Alex laughed, and then they both grew silent.
âYou donât thinkââ
âNo. Dad preyed upon women; a drug lord would have chewed him up,â Chase said.
âAll right, then. After the lawyer and the signature cards, we can go by the house.â
Chase knew this wasnât as easy for Alex as it had been for him. âYouâre ready for that?â
âNeed to pull the Band-Aid off sometime. Every day weâre at the office, it feels less like his place and more like ours.â
Chase knew what Alex was saying. âI think we should start implementing some of the stuff Piper has suggested. Bring up a design team and reconfigure the executive floor. Shift some parking spaces around.â
Alex laughed. âTired of parking your truck on the lowest level?â
âIâm bringing my entire staff over, and my management needs space. Might as well plan ahead. When weâre done mixing things up, there wonât be a lot of Dad left around to haunt us.â
âIs it wrong that I like that idea?â
Chase heard the melancholy in her voice. âHeâs the one that missed out on our lives, not the other way around.â
Piper arrived to work early.
She knew from Chaseâs good-night text that he wasnât going to be in the office until Tuesday. He was informing his shipping business employees about the change in address and needed to hang around for the aftermath. Chase had also let her know that Alex had been told about the baby and their future dating status.
And because of that shift in their relationship, Piper was determined to work harder than anyone on the executive floor. No one would be able to accuse her of preferential treatment because she was kissing the boss.
When Alex rolled in just five minutes before the hour, Piper had already been there for thirty minutes.
âGood morning.â
Alex paused at Piperâs desk and smiled. âMorning.â Alex looked around and then nodded toward her office. âLetâs chat,â she whispered.
Right.
Get any awkward conversation out of the way.
As soon as the door to the office was closed, Alex turned to Piper and grasped her hands in hers. âI am deeply sorry for what happened the other night.â
âI understand where you were coming from, Alex. You donât need to apologize.â
âOh yeah, I do.â Alex walked over to the couch and encouraged Piper to sit beside her. âI knew the second the words were out of my mouth that I messed up. My own insecurities do not need to be projected on you.â
Piper offered her a free pass. âOur insecurities are a lot alike.â
âChase told me as much. Which makes me feel worse.â
âPlease donât. One of the things I like the most about both of you is the lack of bullshit. At least with me. You donât sugarcoat the crap and pretend the obvious isnât staring you in the face. You called me out, and thatâs fair.â
âStill not my place. Your personal life is your own.â
âNot when it involves the boss. And not when that boss is your brother and partner.â
Alex shook her head. âI trust my brother, and Iâve learned that youâre just as trustworthy. Which means I need to butt out.â
Piper wasnât going to argue with her.
âIf you feel my performance is waning or our relationship is interfering with my job, donât hesitate to tell me.â
âYou have my word on that.â
âGood.â
Alex placed a hand on the seat between them. âHow are you feeling?â When she asked the question, she glanced at Piperâs stomach.
âBetter . . . actually. Itâs been a rough few weeks.â
Alex tilted her head to the side. âChase said you havenât told anyone about the baby.â
She shook her head. âMy closest friend here is Julia, and if I told her, the entire office would know by noon. I have a couple of friends back home, but if I told them, word would get back to my parents.â Piper looked at her hands resting in her lap. âI canât have that.â
âAre you scared?â
âPetrified!â The word came out with a laugh.
âChase told me youâre thinking about adoption.â
Piper nodded and shrugged at the same time. âItâs not like I donât want to be a mom one day. I just donât see how I can do this alone. Day-care costs would eat my paycheck, and I donât have much of a savings.â Piper lifted a hand in the air and shook it in Alexâs direction. âThis isnât me looking for an âIâm accidentally pregnantâ pay raise. Itâs just the reality. Getting fired shortly after I realized I was pregnant really hit home how ill prepared I am to be a parent. Adoption makes the most sense.â Sheâd crunched the parenting numbers and knew she could skim by with her salary, but that didnât change the fact that she had zero help and her parents would disown her.
Silence stretched for a moment.
âIt doesnât sound like youâre a hundred percent convinced.â
Hearing Alex voice a thought that swam around inside Piperâs mind brought a swell of tears.
She lifted her thumbs to her eyes and tried to hold back her emotions. âThis is getting old.â She attempted to laugh. âThe hormones are awful.â
Alex jumped up, moved to her desk, and returned with tissues.
âThanks.â Piper dabbed her eyes and nose. Took a deep breath.
âI thought I was pregnant once,â Alex said as she sat back down. âLongest eight days of my life.â
That helped lift the heaviness in Piperâs chest. âItâs been a little longer than that for me.â
Alex reached out, touched Piperâs hand. âIâm here to talk . . . or listen. Or eat ice cream,â Alex mused.
Piper felt the control of her emotions returning. âI need that.â
âGood. Iâm sure my brother is going to dominate your weekends, but maybe we can grab a lunch now and then.â
âIâd like that.â
Alex nodded with a smile. âActually, Thursday, Chase and I have appointments with the estate attorney and a couple of banks. Then we plan on going to the house to secure a few things.â
âSecure?â
âApparently, thereâs a very detailed list of my fatherâs household assets. I guess some of the art on the walls is Christieâs auction houseâworthy. Iâve invited my friend Nick for moral support.â
Piper leaned back. âIs Nick a boyfriend?â
âGod no!â Alex exclaimed. âNo. Nick and I play on the same team.â
âOh.â
âWeâve been best friends since high school. Youâll love him. Anyway . . . weâre going to rifle through our dadâs stuff, drink copious amounts of alcohol, and roast on the man. Wanna join us?â
Piper placed a hand on her belly. âIâm already a victim of tequila, but the rest of it sounds great.â
âPerfect. Plan to break off early, around three thirty . . . and weâll meet you there.â
âSounds good to me.â
Alex stood, opened her arms for a hug.
Piper accepted the gesture. âThank you.â
âFor what?â
âYour acceptance.â
Alex leaned back, looked her in the eye. âMy brother is one of the good ones.â
âI know.â
Alex stepped back and clapped her hands together once. âOkay, letâs get to work. We need to hire a design team. Change some things around here.â
âIâm already interviewing people for the third floor.â
Alex swirled a hand around in a circle. âI mean for up here. Out with the old, in with the new.â
The corners of Piperâs mouth lifted. âIâm on it.â
