Chapter 36
Betrayal At The Altar (Rachel and David)
Amid the chaotic pleas of the top executives and directors, Louis gritted his teeth secretly and finally
spoke in a softened tone. âRachel, I never meant to force you out of the company,â he said. âAnd I
certainly didnât intend to pick on youâ¦â
âDo you think I care about your thoughts at this point?â Rachel interrupted coldly. Her gaze toward
Louis was now only filled with cold indifference. âI came here today to resign from my position.â
If it werenât for her resignation, she would not have even bothered to come to the company that day, let
alone waste time talking to the people present.
After speaking, she turned around and made her way out of the conference room.
Sitting on the chair, Louis saw Rachelâs resolute figure. The suppressed anger in his heart was
completely ignited.
He stood up abruptly. His face was dark and grim. He shouted in a cold voice, âRachel, I donât agree
with your resignation! Do you think the Smith Group is a place where you can behave as atrociously as
you please? You canât just come and go as you please!â
Rachel looked at the infuriated Louis expressionlessly. A sarcastic smile then curled up at the corner of
her mouth. âDo you think the Smith Group alone can trap me?â she asked. âYou want to claim the moral
high ground and dictate what I should do, huh? Donât forget how the Smith Group got to where it is
today.â
âIâ¦â Louis was momentarily speechless, especially when he met Rachelâs icy gaze. His heart felt like it
was being squeezed by something, and at strong sense of suffocation made him forget to breathe
momentarily.
In the past, whenever Rachel faced him, she always had a look of tender affection. She had never
shown such a cold and distant expression.
âSo does this mean she really doesnât care anymore?â Louis thought.
âMiss Grey, youâve been managing all the affairs, big and small, in the Smith Group for many years. If
you suddenly resign, how on earth could the other people in the company cope?â
âThe Green familyâs withdrawal of capital may be a big or small matter,
but why would the board of directors hold it against you over such a trivial matter?â
âMiss Grey, please think twice before you make a decision. The success of the Smith Group today is all
thanks to your hard work. If you just leave like this, wouldnât all the efforts you put in over the years be
wasted?â
However, it seemed that Rachel did not even hear what they said. She pushed open the door of the
conference room and left without looking back.
As he watched the determined figure of the woman walking away, Louis clenched his hands tightly at
his sides. His arms trembled involuntarily.
His heart could not help but sink. It was as if he had lost something irretrievable.
As the news of Rachelâs sudden resignation spread, chaos ensued outside. Some people gloated,
while others started to worry about the future development of the company.
However, Rachel, as the person involved, did not care about these things.
From the moment she chose to cut ties with Louis, the fate of the Smith Group had nothing to do with
her anymore.
She was in her office, neatly tidying up the things in her workspace.
It was at that moment the office door was pushed open. Louis walked in and asked, âRachel, can we
talk?â
âThereâs nothing for us to talk about,â Rachel said. She firmly refused his request, speaking in a
professional tone. She continued coldly, âTake a good look. I donât want any of these things anymore,
so please donât use them as an excuse to approach me in the future.â
Among the things Rachel discarded was the rare photo of them together.
In the photo, Louisâs face was filled with joy and excitement, while Rachelâs lips were curved into a
smile as she gazed at Louis with tenderness in her eyes.
That photo was taken when they received their first investment. Louis pulled Rachel to take it. Ever
since then, Rachel had treasured the photo. However, she now cast it aside as if it was nothing.
It turned out that her leaving the company with fanfare was not just for
show but to make it clear to everyone that she had completely cut ties
with Louis.
âBest wishes for the future success of the Smith Group,â Rachel said in a calm tone before turning
around and leaving.
As they passed each other, Louis suddenly reached out and grabbed Rachelâs wrist. He lifted his thin
lips. With a deep and cold voice that carried a hint of hoarseness, he asked, âRachel, can you not
leave?â
