Chapter 40
Betrayal At The Altar (Rachel and David)
At that moment, Rachel had already arrived at the Johnson family residence.
The Johnson familyâs residence was located in the heart of the city of Seaxas, where land was
incredibly expensive. To its left was a street lined with glorious and opulent hotels. To its right was the
Oaks, an upscale, Europeanâroyalâstyle residential district that was home to the wealthy and top elites.
Yet such an existence could not even hold a candle to the Johnson familyâs residence.
The Johnson familyâs residence was like the leader of the wealthy district, symbolizing the irreplaceable
position of the Johnson family in Seaxas.
The gates of the manor were slowly pulled open, and Adrian drove in before pulling over by the road.
Rachel exhaled lightly and opened the door to get out of the car.
At that moment, the butler, Mr. Chadwick was directing the gardener to trim the lawn. When he noticed
Rachel, he froze and stood rooted to the ground. âMiss⦠Miss Grey?â
He widened his eyes in disbelief, fearing that his eyes had been playing tricks on him.
Adrian finally walked over and teased, âMr. Chadwick, did you realize that RaeâRae has gotten prettier
since the last time you saw her three years ago?â
Only then did Mr. Chadwick realize that his eyes hadnât been playing tricks on him. No longer as stern
as he usually was, he grinned widely and quickly strode forward to welcome her. âMiss Grey, youâre
really back.â
Rachel smiled. Her mannerisms were gracious. âItâs been a long while. Iâm back.â
Mr. Chadwick nodded gleefully and said with tears in his eyes, âGood that youâre back. Good that
youâre backâ¦â
Back then, Rachel had gone all out and turned against Old Mr. Johnson for the sake of pursuing her
soâcalled true love. She even severed all ties
with him. In the past three years, Old Mr. Johnson would often sigh while staring at photos of her.
Everyone looked forward to the day that Rachel would return, and now the day had finally come.
While leading Rachel in, Mr. Chadwick reported loudly, âSir, Miss Grey is back.â
As soon as he finished speaking, someone in the living room hollered, pretending to be angry, âWhatâs
the big deal? Tell her to leave! Since she was ruthless enough to turn her back on me and abandon me
back then, Iâve disowned this unfilial granddaughter of mine!â
Hearing the robust voice that was complaining, Mr. Chadwick pursed his lips and said to Rachel, âMiss
Grey, sir has a bark thatâs worse than his bite. Donât take his words to heart. After you left, he would sit
in your bedroom every night and instruct the servants to make sure your room remained spick and
span every day.â
Rachel grinned and said, âGot it.â
The person seated there was the one who loved her the most in this world. He couldnât bear to let her
suffer in the slightest. He doted on her so dearly that he wished he could give her all the best things in
the world. Of course, she wouldnât take his harsh words seriously.
Adrian grabbed Rachelâs wrist from the side and gestured for her not to be too quick to enter.
Rachel stared at him in puzzlement, only to see Adrian raising his brows and seemingly trying to tell
her, âWatch me.â
Immediately afterward, he yelled loudly, âRaeâRae, sir is still mad at you. You should drop by again
another day lest you incur his wrath.â
As soon as he said that, they heard the dull thuds of a walking stick being knocked against the ground.
Indeed, Old Mr. Jones had come out on his own.
Arthur Johnson, head of the Johnson family, was advanced in years, and his hair had turned white.
However, he was still full of energy and vigor. His face might have been covered in wrinkles, but his
eyes were still sharp. He exuded a vague tinge of shrewdness from his younger days.
Arthur deliberately sulked and humphed coldly. âIâll break the legs of anyone who dares to leave today.â
