Chapter 742
Betrayal At The Altar (Rachel and David)
Chapter 742
Shifting her gaze slightly, Rachel caught a glimpse of a black shirt from the corner of her eye.
One second later, her senses were assaulted by a crisp, wooden fragrance. Her back was pressed
tightly against a manâs firm, warm chest.
âAre your injuries better?â Rachel shied away, afraid to get too close because of the wound on his
chest.
David wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into his embrace. He bent down slightly and
whispered, âOf course they are. Havenât I proved it to you yesterday night?â
Rachel Grey was speechless.
His low, suggestive tone reminded her instantly of their indulgence last night.
Her fair cheeks flushed involuntarily.
She suddenly became uncomfortably aware of his warm chest and the heat of his breath against her
face. Feeling awkward, she tried squirming her way out of his grasp.
David accommodated her cheerfully. He loosened his grip on her waist slightly and wrapped his broad
palm around her cold hand. âItâs getting late. Letâs go back to our room and rest early.â
It was a perfectly ordinary sentence, but after how they indulged each other last night, it sounded like
another disguised invitation to Rachel.
Her legs felt a little sore. She cleared her throat and replied calmly, âIâm not sleepy yet. Why donât you
go back to our room and rest first?â
âAre you really not tired, or trying to avoid me deliberately?â David saw through her immediately. He
bent down and picked Rachel Grey up bridal style. âI promise I wonât do anything else tonight.â
Ever since she realized that âone last timeâ meant nothing to David, Rachel no longer believed every
word he said.
Seeing that she was struggling to escape, Davidâs expression became more serious. âDonât move. Be
careful not to hurt my wound.â
Hearing this, Rachel shot him a look that was filled with a mixture of amusement and resentment.
A single message was evident in her eyes. âOnly now do you think about your wound!â
David did not say anything. He merely walked towards their bedroom with Rachel in his arms.
Half an hour later, Rachel was laying in Davidâs arms again.
Seeing that she was tossing and turning in bed, David thought she was worried about the incident with
Georgia. Patiently, he explained, âGeorgia is not the legitimate daughter of the Walker family. Her
mother was a concubine.â
Rachel opened her eyes in surprise and looked at the man laying so close to her.
He was trying to reassure Rachel that she did not need to worry about facing Landon or even the
Walker family because of her punishment towards Georgia.
The Walker family would never speak up for an illegitimate daughter born to a concubine.
Besides, Landon was a fair judge of most situations and could separate right from wrong. He knew
what he had to do.
Thus, David did not worry that Landon would be biased toward his sister in any way.
âWhat era are we in now? Thereâs still a distinction between legitimate children and children of
concubines?â Rachel could not help but chuckle. âDoes the Landon family still practice the tradition of
taking several concubines?â
It was a casual joke, but when Rachel saw the grim smile on Davidâs face, the grin on her face couldnât
help but fade a little. âYou canât be serious. They still do that?â
âItâs not just the Landon family. The other families also follow that tradition,â David said. âAureliana has
a small population, and each family is involved in many industries. Therefore, having several wives is
still allowed here. Why do you think the competition for the successorâs position is so strong in every
family? Itâs because so many children are involved.â
Hearing this, Rachel could not help but pout. She poked his chest hard with her fingertips and
complained in a low voice, âItâs just an excuse for you men to satisfy your selfish desires.â
âDonât tar all of us with the same brush.â David took her hand and pulled her into his arms. He held her
slender waist tightly. âThey are them, and I am me.â
Despite understanding his words, Rachel pretended not to. She raised her eyebrows slightly and asked
provokingly, âSo?â
âSo, the position of the Jones familyâs mistress is reserved for you alone.â
It was not because she was entitled to that position. However, nobody else deserved it but her.

She would have been entitled to it if the Jones family had chosen her for the role. Nonetheless, she
was the only person who was worthy of it.
Rachelâs eyes were filled with a faint smile. âDavid, I only agreed to your proposal. I donât belong to you
yet.
âOnce you agree to my proposal, youâll belong to me sooner or later.â
With that, he leaned down and kissed her on the lips.
The moment their lips touched, it was as if Pandoraâs blind box had been opened. Everything else
happened naturally.
Compared to the fiery atmosphere here, the mood was very different somewhere else. When Jennifer
heard that Georgia had been expelled from the upper-class circles, disbelief appeared on her face.
Over the years, Georgia had managed to sneak into Davidâs orbit by following Landon around like a
shadow. It would be a lie to say that Jennifer wasnât jealous.
However, her Clifford family upbringing meant reservedness was deeply engraved into her bones
She knew that she was the future mistress of the Clifford family. Being jealous of another girl would not
do, as it would only lower her status.
Georgia had risen high above her station as a concubineâs daughter to become a famous socialite in
the top circles. This was due to Landonâs support and Davidâs willingness to accept her.
Otherwise, with Georgiaâs background, she would never have qualified to enter the top social circles.
Seeing Jenniferâs silence, her confidant muttered, âThatâs great. This circle is finally clean at last.â
She couldnât stand how arrogantly Georgia behaved while socializing with those at the top of society.
Even with the support of the Walker familyâs heir, she was still just a concubineâs daughter.
Previously, she had offended many people while riding on Davidâs coattails. Now, it was time for her to
suffer.
Jennifer saw through her confidantâs thoughts. She put down the comb in her hand and casually played
with a strand of hair hanging down from her chest. âGeorgiaâs expulsion from these circles is both a
punishment for her and a warning to others.â David was cautioning those hostile to Rachel that if they
disrespected her, they would only end up like Georgia.
When the confidant heard this, she pondered for a moment. âBut the head of the Jones family has a
temper. Isnât this punishment a little too light compared to his usual?â
After all, Rachel was his beloved woman.
Georgiaâs punishment for doing something as stupid as provoking Rachel should have been much
worse than getting removed from her social circles.
âHe had to give some respect to Landon.â Jennifer pushed a strand of beautiful hair behind her back
and looked out the window at the crescent moon. âSomeone who can befriend David Jones cannot be
a benevolent person. Just wait and see. Georgia will suffer in the future.â
Beneath her calm tone, there was a hint of shocking coldness.
âIs Grandma asleep?â Jennifer looked at her confidant.
The confidant frowned and replied respectfully, âSheâs asleep.â
Jennifer nodded. âSend someone to investigate this woman called Rachel Grey. Remember to do it
quietly.
âDonât worry, Miss Grey.â After the confidant helped Jennifer settle into bed, she turned around and left.
