Chapter 779
Betrayal At The Altar (Rachel and David)
Chapter 779
Lone Wolf knew that Rachel had gone to great lengths to save him from Ronnie. He also knew that he
had caused Rachel a lot of trouble this time, so he hid the truth about his injuries.
He looked up at Rachel and was about to say something when he noticed Chris standing not too far
away. Lone Wolf pursed his lips and hesitated. In the end, he decided not to say anything.
Chris was a tactful person. When she saw Lone Wolf holding back, she placed the fruit basket she was
holding on the table and said respectfully, âMiss Grey, you guys chat. Iâll stand guard outside.â
With that, she turned around and left, leaving Rachel and Lone Wolf alone in the ward.
After Chris left, Rachel poured a glass of water and handed it to Lone Wolf. âSheâs gone now. If you
have anything to say or ask, feel free to do so.â
âItâs nothing.â Lone Wolf held the glass of water in his palms, not daring to exert force with his fingers. âI
just wanted to ask about you and David.â
Rachel raised her eyebrows slightly. âDidnât Vulture and Blackhawk tell you when they went back?â
Lone Wolf smiled. âThey did. But I still find it unbelievable.â
âThere are many things in this world that are unexpected.â Rachel sat back in her chair. âTell me about
you. Arenât you supposed to be investigating Ronnie? Why did the investigation turn into an
assassination?â Rachel asked plainly.
If it were an assassination mission to begin with, it would have involved members of the combat team.
They would not have sent Lone Wolf, who was in charge of intelligence, to handle it.
Moreover, Lone Wolf was a calm and thoughtful person. He was not impulsive like Vulture, nor as rash
as Blackhawk.
After much pondering, the only reason Rachel could think of was that Lone Wolf bore a personal
grudge against Ronnie.
âYou believe him?â Lone Wolf lowered his eyelids to conceal the mocking in his eyes. âDo you know
who asked me to carry out the investigation?â
Rachel did not reply. Instead, she looked at Lone Wolf and patiently waited for him to finish his
sentence. âItâs Yandel.â
âIt was Yandel who requested me to investigate Ronnie. During my investigation, I realized Ronnie
seemed to be onto something too. Based on the clues, I gathered that he was investigating Yandel,â
Lone Wolf said. âPreviously, you asked me to find out about Yandel. But his background is unclear. I
had wanted to take the opportunity to probe more. Who would have guessed.â
Lone Wolf paused for a moment. His bandaged fingers curled up slightly and tensed. âWho would have
guessed that I would fall into his trap and be maligned for attempting his murder?â
To think about it, he had underestimated how scheming Ronnie could be.
Ronnie had used the secret room and forced Lone Wolf to make his move. Lone Wolf was unable to
get himself out of the situation.
Regardless how skillful he was, there was no way Lone Wolf could fend off the numerous bodyguards
who showed up.
He was trapped inside with no way to escape. Eventually, he exhausted his stamina bit by bit.
After capturing Lone Wolf alive, Ronnie taunted him, âWhat, you people from Red Flame dare to dig
into my background?â Ronnie smiled deviously as he lifted Lone Wolfâs chin with his index finger.
The expression in Rachelâs eyes turned stern as she listened to Lone Wolfâs explanation.
It seemed that there had been a long-standing grudge between Ronnie and Yandel.
An enemyâs enemy would be an ally.
Rachel left the private hospital after some time.
She walked out of the hospital building and called Vulture. âLone Wolfâs hand is injured. Two of his ribs
are broken, and he has snapped his hamstrings also. These are not his only injuries. In short, he needs
to recuperate well during this period.â
Chris opened the car door for her. As Rachel bent down and got into the car, Vultureâs voice came from
the other end of the phone. âIâve heard. He told me everything.â
Vulture gritted his teeth in secret and suppressed the anger that was arising in his heart. âThe enmity
between Red Flame and Ronnie has been formed! Better donât let me run into that devious Ronnie, or
Iâll skin him alive! By the way, I have to give you my thanks this time.â
After a slight pause, Vulture added reluctantly, âAnd thank David on my behalf too.â
âSure.â
After Rachel hung up the phone, Chris asked, âMiss Grey, are you going to the office now?â
âYes,â Rachel replied.
The car drove steadily on the road. Rachel raised her hand and played with the tassel on her earring.
She asked Chris casually, âHow much do you know about Yandel?â
âI donât know much about him.â Chris held the steering wheel and glanced at Rachel through the
rearview mirror. She said calmly, âMr. Jones has met him a few times, but they did not interact much in
private.â
Rachel raised her eyebrows slightly. âSo the feud between the both of them ran deep?â
Chrisâs eyes upturned into a faint smile. âYou canât consider it as a feud, but they will never become
friends. The Olson family listens to the Elders. Itâs not an exaggeration to say that they are their
minions. Therefore, we are on opposite ends of the stick. That assassination of Mr. Jones was also
orchestrated by the Olson family.â
Upon hearing that, Rachel looked at Chris with a meaningful gaze.
When Chris did not hear a response from Rachel, she raised her eyes up to look at her.
The moment their eyes met, a realization dawned upon Chris. Her fingertips curled up, and her throat
became dry. âDid Mr. Jones not tell you about it?â
âI am hearing it from you now.â Rachel said.
It made sense now. David had previously warned Rachel to stay away from Yandel, but refused to
elaborate further.
So that was the reason.
A knot formed in Chrisâs throat when she heard Rachelâs reply. She pursed her lips and said, âMiss
Grey, Mr. Jones did not tell you because he does not want you to worry, so can you keep it a secret
from him?â
David should never know that Chris had told Rachel all that.
Given how much David cared about Rachel, if he found out how much Chris had divulged to
her, he would surely punish Chris severely.
âDonât worry.â Rachel understood her concerns. She smiled faintly as she turned her head to look at the
rapidly changing scenery outside the car window. âIâll pretend Iâve never heard this before.â
The knot in Chrisâs throat loosened and a smile appeared on her face. âThank you, Miss
Grey.â
Rachel glanced at Chris. Her light, crisp voice carried a hint of cheerfulness. âYou do not
seem to loathe me now.â
Chris smiled awkwardly at her. âI apologize for my past behavior.â
As Davidâs trusted aides, they inevitably needed to take a lot of things into consideration.
With Davidâs background, there were indeed very few women who could be his equal.
Chrisâs first impression of Rachel was that she was nothing more than a bimbo. Her presence would
bring nothing but burden and trouble to David.
However, now that they had been through several ordeals, Chrisâs impression of Rachel had changed.
Rachel understood Chrisâs change in attitude towards her. She smiled. âIt is
understandable.â
If there were someone whom you looked up to and regarded as invincible, you would hope that he
remained as such forever. Therefore, it was difficult to accept if that someone suddenly developed a
weakness. This was more so if the person you admired was
someone you knew.
As they continued their conversation, the car arrived at the entrance of the Johnson Corporation.
Rachel opened her car door and got out.
