Chapter 853
Betrayal At The Altar (Rachel and David)
Rachel Grey did not overthink it and asked casually. âIs Grandpa asleep?â
âYes, heâs asleepâ Mr. Chadwick said, âMr. Johnson went fishing with a friend today. He was exhausted
after a long dayâ
Rachel nodded. Just as she was about to go upstairs, she saw Arthur walking out with Lucas âWhy are
you back?â she asked. in surprise.
âIâm back to discuss the wedding.â Lucas walked over and signaled at her âShall we go out for a chat?â
Rachel raised her eyebrows slightly. âDo you have anything to drink?â
Lucas pursed his lips and walked towards the wine cellar. âLetâs go.â
The two arrived at the wine cellar.
They sat on a leather sofa under the bright crystal lights that echoed with the expensive wine cabinets
around them, the extravagant cellar was decorated and well-stocked.
Rachel dropped some ice cubes into her brandy and swirled the glass lightly. The ice cubes clinked
against the glass wall, emitting a crisp, cracking sound. âHave you taken care of Hans Grey?â she
asked.
She did not know if Hans would let it go, but Rachel understood Lucas too well. He would not let Hans
off easily.
Therefore, she guessed that Lucas wanted to talk about Hans Grey.
However, he looked solemn tonight, as if something weighed on his mind.
Lucasâs dark eyes glanced at Rachel intensely when he heard her question.
Then he took out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it. The nicotine gave him temporary relief and
eased him off his weary
mind
âYouâll read in the news tomorrow morning that the Grey family has declared bankruptcy due to debt
problems,â Lucas announced.
He stared at Rachel without blinking, fearing that he would miss the subtle changes on her face.
However, Rachel looked indifferent to the information, as if Hans Grey was merely a dispensable
passerby in her life.
Rachel took a sip of brandy and rested the glass on the table, making a slight sound. âSo, the person
leaving in the car just now was Hans Grey?â she asked knowingly in an icy tone.
Lucas lowered his eyes and did not look at her. âYes!â
Rachelâs eyes flickered slightly, and her lips curled into a meaningful smile. âLooks like his wishful
thinking didnât work out. Instead, he stepped straight into Grandpaâs minefieldâ
The Grey family would have been safe and sound if Hans had not treaded into Arthur Johnsonâs
minefield.
Lucas did not utter a word; he finished the brandy in his glass instead.
After a long pause, he said, âRae-Rae, I donât know how much feeling you have left for Hans Grey over
the years, but he is someone who will do anything to achieve his goals. He will only harm you if you let
him roam freely.â
âI know, Rachel said admittedly. It was a fact she could not deny.
She thought of the sufferings she had endured all these years.
Since Hans chose to believe Lily Greyâs and her motherâs words, Rachel had utterly given up on her
father.
Since they did not have deep feelings for each other, how could they not bear to part with each other?
If she did not ascertain that she was Hansâs biological daughter, she would have suspected he had an
inexplicable intense, deep-seated hatred toward her for some unknown reason.
Otherwise, why did he not believe her back then and abandoned her in the snow?
In her opinion, Hans only had himself to blame for his current ordeal.
He could have lived the rest of his life comfortably on the Grey familyâs wealth if he was not so greedy.
However, Rachel was curious how Hans had angered her grandfather so much to lead the elderly man
to uproot the Grey family against his late daughterâs dying wish.
Rachel practically grew up with Lucas since she came to the Johnson family,
They were inseparable; Luras used to follow Rachel everywhere she went. As such, there was an
unbreakable bond between
the two.
They would know each otherâs thoughts with a mere glance.
At this moment, Lucas knew what was on Rachelâs mind when he saw her in deep thought.
He lowered his eyes so she could not see his emotions. He said calmly, âHans Grey wanted to make a
deal with the Johnson family in which he claimed you were involved. In return, he requested the
Johnson family to protect his current wealth and
status.â
âGrandpa spent time with him alone after I brought him back to the mansion. I was not privy to their
discussion, but my instinct told me Hans must have angered the old man.â
Otherwise. Arthur would not be in such a rage to go against his daughterâs dying wish.
The Johnson family had been less than lukewarm to the Grey family all these years as if it did not care
about the shameful things Hans had done. However, the men in the Johnson family had always held a
grudge against him.
Arthur had held back in the past because he could not bear to go against his daughterâs wish before
she passed.
Hans must have struck a raw nerve in Arthur to make him break his promise in a fit of anger.
Rachel looked calm, and her tone was emotionless. âWill Hans let it go if the Grey family declares
bankruptcy?â
âDonât worry, Grandpa will make necessary arrangements for Hans after deciding on the fate of the
Grey family,â Lucas said. *From now on, the Grey family will no longer have a foothold in Pollister, and
you are the only daughter in the Johnson family.â
The two talked till late in the night, Lucas walked Rachel back to her room. âItâs getting late. Have a
good rest.â
âYeah,â Rachel replied. âYou too.â
Rachel then went inside her room. Lucas looked gloomy and complicated as he stared at the closed
door.
He lied to Rachel just now.
Lucas was, in fact, present when Hans talked to Arthur and found out about Hansâs so-called secret
about Rachel. However, he did not expect Hans to deny that Rachel was not part of the Grey family,
insisting that she was not his biological bloodline.
Hans revealed that Sophia Johnson was already pregnant when she married him.
Judging. Lucas was shocked and burned with anger when he heard that.
He did not expect Hans to be so despicable as to slander his late wifeâs name after she passed so
many years ago. Hans seemed to have noticed their suspicion. Then he immediately plucked a strand
of his hair and asked for a paternity
test.
He seemed to have foreseen the outcome judging from his unabashed self-confidence.
Arthur looked at Hans indifferently. His eyes flickered with an unfathomable gloom as he announced,
âThe Grey family finally declares bankruptcy because of debt disputes. Hans Grey, the familyâs legal
representative who suffered at tremendous blow, will be admitted to a mental sanatorium for treatment
and recovery.â
The simple statement changed Hansâ life and the Grey familyâs fate for good.
After its bankruptcy, the Grey family would no longer exist in Pollister, and Hans would probably die in a
sanatorium.
