Chapter 856
Betrayal At The Altar (Rachel and David)
Chapter 856
Landon looked at Rachel intently when he walked past her.
Although he did not utter a word, his meaningful gaze seemed to have said it all.
Smart people like him did not need to spell out every word. A simple gaze was worth a thousand
words.
Rachel took out her cell phone and sent a message to David to
she turned around and lett
that she had left her belongings in the car. Then
When she arrived at the guest room, she did not enter Instead, she crossed her arms and leaned
against the door. With her back facing Landon, Rachel asked casually. âWhat do you want to say to ine,
Mr. Walker?â
âI want to talk to you about David, Landon replied.
Rachel raised her brows slightly. âTm all ears.â
Landon looked up slowly Rachel noticed the dark and complex look behind his glasses. He said in a
severe tone, âMiss Grey, I hope you will think about it carefully before deciding after you hear what Iâm
going to sayâ
Rachel frowned imperceptibly in anticipation of what he had to say.
She did not know Landon well. At most, she had met him a few times when she was with David. They
had no interaction in private whatsoever. However, she knew that Landon and Jimmy were buddies
who had risked their lives with David. Therefore, she was sincere with both men.
Rachel was used to Jimmy and Landon bickering and laughing in social settings. As such, his
unexpected tone now weighed her down inexplicably.
As she pondered, Landon said, âDo you know why David chose to announce your relationship?â
He paused for a moment before continuing. Because he knows you donât want to hide behind him and
be protected. Hence he gave you the status to stand alongside him. He wants to tell everyone that you
belong to him. His action may seem meaningless to you, but to us, itâs equivalent to revealing his
weakness publicly.
âMany people have wanted his life behind his back all these years. However, they think twice because
of his status and influence in the underworld. Now that he has announced your relationship, they will
target you instead. I do not doubt that youâre a capable woman, but please stay out of harmâs way so
that he wonât go crazy again.â
Rachelâs brows furrowed. âCrazy?â she said hesitantly.
Crazy was an adjective most people used to ridicule a personâs state of mind. However, judging from
Landonâs severe tone, it sounded deeper than that.
Landon stared at her intently for a moment before looking away and lowering his eyes. âDavid is a
living being just like you and me. He will also have emotional breakdowns when the pressure is too
overwhelming. He lost his mind once many years ago but stabilized after a treatment period. I thought
he wouldnât lose control of his emotions again until I saw him rush to the abandoned building site with
his men last night.â
Landon and Jimmy knew very well how much Rachel meant to David after all this time.
However, they only saw the tip of the iceberg, a small part of a larger and more complex issue.
Last night, when Landon saw David go to the unfinished building site in a rage, he realized something
was wrong.
Davidâs intense look and bloodshot eyes proved Landonâs suspicion to be correct. Landonâs heart sank
when he realized he was spot on about his buddyâs state of mind.
Fortunately, Rachel was not hurt. Otherwise, David would have killed the person involved in the car
accident.
Rachel recalled what happened last night.
Now that she thought about it, David was indeed overbearingly nervous, but she did not overthink it
then.
She took a deep breath and looked at Landon. âWhy are you telling me this? Are you worried that I
wonât be able to withstand the pressure and leave him? Or are you worried that Iâll abandon him
because of that?â
Landon had been carefully observing Rachelâs expression after he told her about David; he tried to find
clues from the subtle changes on her face to guess her mind.
However, Rachel seemed calm, as if she had anticipated it. Landon could not read her thoughts
through her expressions. Landon was clueless about what Rachel was thinking. He pondered for a long
time and said calmly, âIâm telling you this because I hope you can be mentally prepared. As for leaving
himâ¦â
He paused for a moment and flashed a meaningful smile. âPerhaps you donât know him well enough
after all. He wonât let you leave easily after he has chosen you to be the one.â
David was known to be possessive by lus buddies.
He would surely not let go easily of someone he fancied, let alone someone he cared deeply about like
Rachel.
David would have to make the first move if Rachel wanted to leave. Otherwise, she could forget about
escaping from him for
1
the rest of her life.
*Please donât blame me for being nosy, Miss Grey.â Landon pushed his glasses up and said, âYouâre
the only woman who has stayed by his side so far, and Iâve never seen him take someone so seriously.
If he lost control of his emotions one day and did something to hurt you, I hope you can understand and
forgive him. That was because he cares about you too much!â
David could not bear to see Rachel hurt because he cared about her.
Rachel was like a rare treasure he was unwilling to let go of or hide. On the other hand, if he put it out
for display, he would be disgusted by othersâ coveted gazes. As such, he repeatedly fell into his own
web of conflicts.
Rachel twitched her lips. âNo matter what, I thank you for sharing with me today.â
Otherwise, she might never find out about Davidâs dark side.
âThereâs no need to thank me,â Landon said. âAs his woman, you have a right to know.â
Now that he had done his part and left the decision in Rachelâs hands, he would not interfere anymore.
When Rachel returned to the back garden, David extended his hand to her. âAre you hungry?â
âA little.â She took a deep breath and looked at the barbecue in Jimmyâs hand; she craved some. âCan
we eat now?â she asked. eagerly.
âYes, of course,â Jimmy replied as he handed the skewers to Rachel. âTry some while theyâre hot. Iâm
not boasting when I say Iâm a professional when it comes to skewers,â he said proudly.
Landon sneered. âTsk, tsk. Youâve been standing by the oven for too long, bro. It has gone to your
head!â
Jiminy put on a false smile and said, âYouâve turned sarcasm into an art form, man!TM
As the two bickered away, the outdoor barbecue was elevated to a high point. Everyone enjoyed
themselves eating and chatting.
The meal lasted for a long time. Jimmy, the self-appointed barbecue chef, was exhausted but could not
keep up with the demand for more. As he wiped the sweat off his forehead, he complained, âThis is
fucking inhumane!â
âI think youâre doing quite well,â Landon scoffed, trying to lift his spirit.
It sounded like a compliment, but Jimmy felt otherwise. It was condescending coming from Landon.
