The One Night Stand Turns Out To Be My Professor
103
Jacobâs POV
I leaned back against the cold stone wall of the balcony, the vampire realmâs crimson sky glowing faintly above. It was late, but I couldnât sleep. Something had been eating at me for days now, and I had a feeling it wasnât just my own nerves. Ian had been acting strange, more closed off than usual, even for him.
The phone buzzed in my pocket, and I smiled when I saw Jennyâs name flashing on the screen. The worry in my chest left me briefly. She had her way of making all my worries disappear.
âHey, troublemaker,â I answered, my voice softer than usual.
âTroublemaker? Me?â she shot back, a teasing hint in her voice. âThatâs rich coming from you, Mr. Mysterious. Whatâs going on? Why are you still awake?â
I sighed, rubbing my hand over my jaw. âI could ask you the same thing. Shouldnât you be in bed?â
âCouldnât sleep,â she said with a sigh. âJust⦠thinking. You?â
âSame.â I stepped away from the wall and walked to the railing, the vampire realm stretching out before me. âActually, Iâve been thinking about Ian. Somethingâs off with him, Jen.â
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and when she spoke again, her voice was serious. âWhat do you mean? Is he okay?â
âI donât know,â I admitted, frowning. âHeâs been weird lately. More⦠distant. Not that Ianâs ever been Mr. Sunshine, but this feels different. I think somethingâs bothering him, but he wonât talk about it.â
Jenny was quiet for a moment, probably thinking it over. âYou think itâs about Sophia? Maybe somethingâs happening with her?â
âThatâs what I thought at first,â I said, tapping my fingers on the railing absentmindedly. âBut he hasnât said anything about her either. Not in the way he usually does. I donât know, Jen. I feel like something bigger is going on.â
âWell, why donât you ask him?â she suggested, as if it were the simplest thing in the world.
I chuckled softly. âYou donât just ask Ian. You know how he is. He keeps things locked up tighter than a vault. But⦠maybe I will. Iâm getting tired of the silence.â
Jennyâs laugh came through the phone, light and teasing. âThereâs the Jacob I know. If anyone can get him to talk, itâs you. Youâre probably the only person on this planet heâll actually open up to.â
âMaybe,â I said, though I wasnât as sure as she seemed to be. Ian and I had always been close, but that didnât mean he shared everything with me. Especially when it came to things that troubled him deeply.
âPromise me youâll check on him?â Jenny asked, her voice softer now. âI hate the idea of him going through something alone, even if heâs too stubborn to admit it.â
I smiled at her concern. âIâll check on him. Donât worry.â
After we hung up, I made my way through the stone corridors of the castle, the torches cresting a little light in the hallway. Ianâs room wasnât far, and when I reached the tall wooden door, I hesitated for a moment before knocking.
âCome in,â Ianâs voice called from the other side.
I pushed the door open to find him sitting by the window, staring out into the night. His expression was unreadable, but there was a tension in his shoulders that made me certain I was rightâsomething was bothering him.
âYou busy?â I asked, stepping inside and closing the door behind me.
He glanced at me briefly before turning back to the window. âNot particularly. Whatâs on your mind?â
I leaned against the doorframe, crossing my arms over my chest. âActually, I was going to ask you the same thing. Youâve been acting⦠off.â
Ian didnât respond at first, his gaze still fixed on the windows. For a moment, I thought he wasnât going to say anything at all. But then he sighed, rubbing a hand over his face.
âItâs nothing,â he said, but it seemed like he was even trying to convince himself of that.
âBullshit,â I replied bluntly. âI know you, Ian. Somethingâs eating at you. What is it?â
He finally turned to look at me, his expression guarded. âItâs⦠complicated.â
âTry me,â I said, stepping closer. âLook, I know you donât like to share your problems, but Iâm your brother. You donât have to go through whatever this is alone.â
Ian was silent for a long moment before he sighed again, running a hand through his hair. âItâs about Sophia.â
I raised an eyebrow. âWhat about her?â
âLyanna,â he began, his tone hesitant, âshe said something. Something thatâs been⦠bothering me.â
My curiosity piqued. âWhat did she say?â
âShe suspectsâ¦â Ian trailed off, his jaw tightening as if the words themselves were hard to say. âShe suspects that Sophia might be from an ancient vampire lineage. One that disappeared a long time ago.â
I blinked, the meaning of his words sinking in. âAn ancient lineage? What the hell does that even mean?â
âI donât know,â Ian admitted, his frustration evident. âLyanna didnât give me many details. She just⦠hinted at it. And now, I canât stop thinking about it.â
I frowned, pacing the room. âWhy wouldnât she tell you everything? If she has information about Sophiaâs past, shouldnât you know?â
âThatâs what I thought,â Ian said, his voice tight. âBut Lyanna is⦠cryptic. She said she needed time to dig deeper, to be sure. She asked for my permission to investigate, and I gave it to her.â
I stopped pacing and turned to face him, my mind racing. âAnd how do you feel about all this? I mean, if itâs trueâ¦â
âIf itâs true, it changes everything,â Ian said, standing up and walking over to the window again. âIâve been trying to protect her, to keep her safe. But if sheâs part of this ancient lineage, there are forces at play that I canât even begin to understand. Forces that might be beyond my control.â
I crossed my arms, trying to process everything. âSo, what now? We just wait for Lyanna to find out more?â
Ian nodded, though he didnât seem particularly happy about it. âThereâs nothing else I can do for now. But itâs been⦠eating at me. Iâve spent my whole life trying to avoid the politics, the power struggles, the ancient bloodlines. And now, I find out that the woman I care about might be tied to all of it.â
I raised an eyebrow at the word âcare.â Ian wasnât exactly the type to talk about his feelings, especially not when it came to Sophia. âYou care about her, huh?â
Ian shot me a look, though there was no point in denying it. âI care about her more than I should. Thatâs why this is so hard.â He paused, and then added so quiet that if I wasnât paying attention, I wouldnât have heard him. âIâm in love with her.â
I nodded slowly, understanding how he felt. âLook, I donât know what Lyannaâs going to find, but whatever it is, weâll deal with it. Youâre not alone in this, Ian. Iâve got your back, and so does Sophia.â
Ianâs gaze softened, and for a moment, the tension in his shoulders seemed to ease. âThanks, Jacob. I appreciate that.â
âJust donât keep me in the dark next time,â I said, giving him a pointed look. âWeâre in this together, whether you like it or not.â
Ian smirked, the smallest hint of amusement in his eyes. âIâll keep that in mind.â
We stood in silence for a while, the consequences of the conversation between us. There were still so many things we had to figure out, so many questions that we had no answer to. But for now, at least, I knew I wasnât the only one carrying the burden.
âLet me know when you hear more from Lyanna,â I said as I turned to leave. âAnd try to get some sleep. Youâre going to need your strength for whateverâs coming.â
Ian nodded, though I could tell his mind was still miles away. Whatever Lyanna had uncovered, it had shaken him more than he wanted to admit. And if it had shaken Ian, it was enough to make me uneasy too.
âYou canât tell Jenny or Sophia about this though,â he murmured just as I was about to step out of the room. âThis is confidential, between me, you and Lyanna. You know that right?â
I sighed, staring at him for a moment and contemplating telling him it would be better for him to tell Sophia, but then I just nodded. âBetween us,â I agreed.
As I walked back to my own room, Jennyâs words echoed in my mind: If anyone can get him to talk, itâs you. I might have gotten Ian to open up tonight, but the truth was, I had no idea how deep this thing went.
Whatever this ancient lineage was, it was only the beginning. And I had a feeling we were about to find ourselves in the middle of something much bigger than any of us had bargained for.
