Chapter 389
The Lady Nun Vows Revenge by Caroline Rowland
389.Chapter 389 âDamn it!â Sophie cursed in her heart. I knew that scheming Eliza would pull something like this. But I never thought sheâd have such a trick up her sleeve. Eliza even used Diana as leverage, forcing Matthew to choose between me and Diana. What right did that bitch, who hadnât even married Matthew, have to compare herself to me?â
Sophie gritted her teeth in fury. As she lowered her head, her eyes were as terrifying as if poisoned âAre you stirring up trouble?â Matthew asked.
Eliza couldnât help but find Matthewâs words utterly laughable. âOnly someone with a guilty conscience would assume everyone else is scheming.â
She glanced at Sophie indifferently and sneered, âDo you think I, the Holy Lady, would waste my time using you to disrupt her peace? Donât flatter yourselves. Youâre not even worth it.â
Matthew scoffed. âOh, how noble of you. If it wasnât you who sent that letter to stir things up, why else would Diana leave Westshire and rush to Hasen City? And immediately after she arrives, she demands to break off the engagement.â
Matthew still believed Diana did that because Eliza said something to her.
âDo you think anything in this world can stay hidden? The disgraceful, shameless acts committed by people in Dukeâs estate are hardly few. Everyone in Hasen City has already heard all about them. Did you honestly believe word wouldnât spread beyond?â
Eliza asked.
She let out a scoff, her patience wearing thin. âEnough with nonsense. My patience is limited. You either stand by and watch Sophie go to prison, or agree to break off the engagement.â
As she said that, Elizaâs gaze flicked briefly toward Gabriel, who had remained silent the entire time.
It was clear he had already seen through Elizaâs intentions for today. And he knew just as well that Eliza stood no chance against people of the Dukeâs estate with a handful of worms. Since she couldnât shake their power, Gabriel chose to stand by and watch.
After all, it was not Gabriel but his rebellious son who had to choose between two girls.
Gabriel felt a pang of guilt toward Matthew. But if Matthew had been more sensible and agreed to break off the engagement earlier to save Benedict, Gabriel might have been able to turn the situation to their advantage.
But now, Eliza had seized Sophieâs weakness, leaving Matthew no choice.
Even Gabriel himself was in a somewhat passive position.
âBut it doesnât matter. As long as the outcome is good and Benedict is saved, letting Matthew suffer a little is acceptable. At worst, Iâll make it up to him later, Gabriel thought.
Eliza noticed Gabrielâs silence and immediately understood his stance.
Thatâs pretty good, she thought.
That was what she wanted. She wanted to leave Matthew utterly isolated.
âIn your dreams!â Matthewâs anger flared as he glared at Eliza. âI canât believe you would go this far to ruin my engagement with Diana. Now, youâre even framing Sophie.â
âWho said Iâm framing her?â Eliza gestured toward the worms with a faint smile. Then, she said, âThese were found in Lady Sophieâs room, right here in the Dukeâs estate, with all of you as witnesses. I havenât even stepped foot inside. So how could I possibly frame her? With the evidence shown in front of everyone, are you still trying to deny it?â
Eliza wasnât about to let Matthew off the hook. She immediately commanded, âSince thatâs the case, letâs get her to prison.â The Black Flag soldiers stepped forward at Elizaâs order, ready to seize Sophie.
Sophie let out a terrified scream and darted behind Matthew. âNo, Matthew! Please, save me. Matthew, I didnât do anything.
wrong. Please donât let them take me away!
Matthew tried to shield her, but the Black Flag soldiers overpowered him. As they grabbed Sophie and began dragging her away, he roared, âStop it!â
