“If he was gone, things might be better…” Nicole murmured.

The nurse squeezed Nicole's hand tighter and looked around. The other nurse who was supposed to be relieving her was busy washing dishes, and the bodyguards outside seemed oblivious.

He lowered his voice and advised her, “Miss, please don't talk like that. Being kinder can make life easier.”

This nurse had a compassionate heart. Jarrod had instructed both nurses to report every detail, no matter how minor. However, touched by Nicole's pale complexion, this nurse felt a surge of empathy for Nicole. While her colleague was away, she decided not to pass on Nicole's unfavorable comments.

“Miss, if you feel tired, you should rest. Don’t say those words, okay?” the nurse gently advised Nicole.

Perhaps it was the nurse's kind demeanor that reminded Nicole of her mother, she looked at the nurse with soft eyes and murmured a pleasant "okay."

Just then, the other nurse entered the room. The compassionate nurse quickly removed her hand from Nicole's and returned to a professional detachment, attending to her duties.

Nicole sat back, staring at the ceiling, counting the days and pondering when Jarrod would next act. What methods he would use this time… It seemed like there wasn't much left that tied her to him…

At the Hampton family residence, Vicki still carried a strong odor of blood. Her wrists had been treated by the family doctor.

He had recently tried to cut his wrists.

Fortunately, the attempt was quickly discovered, and there was no threat to his life.

It was not considered appropriate for him to go to the hospital, as such matters were to remain out of the public eye.

Vicki's wedding with Jarrod was drawing ever closer. If the media found out, there would no doubt be a lot of speculation. This would undoubtedly affect both families.

Wayne called Jarrod to ask what had happened. He had tried to get information out of Vicki, but she stayed quiet.

Jarrod paused before replying, “I’ll take care of it.”

Wayne stopped him with a reminder. “Jarrod, do you still remember the promise you made me?”

Seeing Jarrod's silence, Wayne spoke up.

«At first I was hesitant about Vicki marrying you because, frankly, you don't love her. She was so insistant that I finally had no choice but to give in. Jarrod, remember that the Hampton family has treated you well.

When no one else was willing to take a chance on you, we did. Vicki is the daughter of the woman I love most, so I have always treated her with affection. Vicki takes after her mother in appearance and personality. They both prioritize emotions above all else, so then I only asked for one promise from you.

With a meaningful look, Wayne added, "You mustn't do anything wrong."

Jarrod replied solemnly, “Don't worry. “I haven’t forgotten.”

“I'm glad to hear it.” Wayne patted Jarrod on the shoulder and continued, “A man of your position will inevitably meet a lot of women in social circles. Vicki's mother used to make quite a fuss about it, but she was easily calmed down. Make a little effort and indulge her a little. As long as you don't bring any home, having a few favorites on the side is manageable.”

Wayne knew what he was talking about. He had not been faithful to just one woman. Understanding the nature of men, he knew there would always be one memorable one. Effort was necessary, but the status of legal wife had to remain undisturbed.

Wayne remembered how Vicki's mother was a troublemaker, but he never let her overshadow his legal wife. The same rule applied here.

Additionally, Vicki was raised directly under Bess, Wayne's legal wife. Wayne held a traditional view and believed that adherence to certain protocols cemented a person's rightful place in the Hampton family.

Jarrod agreed and spoke firmly. “The wedding will go ahead as planned, but I need a commitment from you.”

Wayne stroked his beard and replied firmly, "Go ahead."
