Chapter 130
Love Unbreakable by Bank Brook
? ? ? ? ?
The first to enter Raegan's room were police officers. Aware that Raegan had awakened, they asked her some questions.
The day the rescue team had arrived, those criminals had fled, abandoning Raegan in a pool of her own blood.
Newly awake, Raegan looked sullen. An injury to his tongue prevented him from speaking much.
When the cops came out, Nicole went into the room to visit Raegan.
Nicole's eyes filled with tears as she saw Raegan's bruised face. She longed to hold Raegan but was afraid of aggravating her injuries, so she clung to the edge of the bed and cried briefly.
Regaining her composure, Nicole searched for words of comfort for Raegan, but none came to mind.
Redness stained Raegan's eyes, the result of excessive crying from her earlier disappointment in Mitchel.
Nicole nearly cried when she saw Raegan's reddened eyes, but she managed to stifle her tears.
"If you're hurting, Raegan, let it out."
Like Raegan, Nicole harbored great affection and expectations for Raegan's unborn baby.
They had even agreed that Nicole would be the child's godmother.
But the baby was no longer there...
Thinking about the poor baby broke Nicole's heart.
Perceptive as ever, Raegan noticed a scar on Nicole's face and raised her hand to caress it, asking softly, "What's wrong?"
Raegan's voice was harsh and dissonant, scarred as if by fire and aggravated by her wounded tongue.
Nicole was stunned by Raegan's insight. Even after using top quality healing cream, one mark kept marring Nicole's face.
Luckily, it was barely noticeable, extending from her cheekbone to her ear, hidden by her hair.
Raegan's genuine concern brought tears to Nicole's eyes.
"Is now really the time to worry about others?" Nicole said between sobs.
Although bruised and battered, Raegan remained silent about her own agony, focusing instead on the state of Nicole's face.
Nicole felt sorry for Raegan. Why did the kind Raegan deserve such suffering?
Nicole lied to Raegan, saying it had been the result of an accidental fall.
Hearing Nicole's explanation, Raegan gave her a reassuring pat on the back of her hand.
Hoping to lighten Raegan's mood, Nicole told her some jokes.
To his surprise, Raegan smiled at his lame jokes.
Nicole felt something was wrong. Raegan's behavior was disturbingly strange.
It was clear to Nicole that Raegan was upset, but she kept her composure and avoided talking about the loss of the baby.
Confused, Nicole hesitated before saying, "Mitchel..."
Raegan quickly turned her face away, refusing to listen.
Only then did Nicole breathe a sigh of relief. Raegan's emotional response indicated that her mental state was intact.
After staying in the room for a while, a nurse arrived to remind Nicole that Raegan needed more rest.
With no other option, Nicole informed Raegan that she would return the next day.
Once the door was closed, Raegan's soft facade faded and she let out a muffled sob. Clinging to the blanket, her tears flowed uncontrollably.
Consumed by desperation, her voice sounded especially grating.
Was it a divine punishment? A punishment for his audacity to covet a joy that was never his?
He hated his own greed for Mitchel's love.
If she had left sooner, perhaps her unborn child would have been saved.
But it was too late.
At that moment, a delicate, pale hand hovered over the doorknob of Raegan's living room.
Mitchel's fingers trembled.
The screams of anguish from inside the room were like daggers in his heart, taking away his courage to enter.
Mitchel turned around, back against the wall, struggling to breathe.
Much later, when she finally worked up the courage to go inside, Raegan was pretending to be asleep, tended to by a nurse.
Mitchel waved the nurse away, his eyes trained on Raegan's profile.
Raegan's cheekbones were more pronounced, her body fragile under the sheets.
Mitchel reached out to touch her hair, but Raegan squirmed and avoided his touch.
She had been awake, unable to fall asleep.
She longed to sleep, to dream that her baby was with her.
But she never dreamed of him again.
She was only pretending to be asleep to give the tired nurse a break.
He felt Mitchel's entrance, his unmistakable smell.
He decided to remain silent and continued pretending until Mitchel's contact broke his resolve.
In a rough voice, Mitchel said her name: âRaeganâ¦â
âGo away,â Raegan responded, her voice devoid of emotion, unwilling to waste another word with him.
Mitchel felt a pang in his heart.
«I'm sorry, Raegan. If I had known, I would never haveâ¦
Raegan cut him off, her voice icy: âI guess you must be glad our son is gone.â
Those words felt like poison darts piercing Mitchel's heart, and his insides hurt.
He wished she would scream, even hit him.
That, he thought, would be less tormenting than his indifferent words.
The thought of wasting more time with Mitchel had never crossed Raegan's mind.
With his eyes closed, he declared: âGo now. We will talk about the divorce tomorrow.
His voice was firm, but determined.
Mitchel took her hand, his face ashen and his voice hoarse.
«Raegan, I promise to trust you from now on. We can have another child someday.
When he mentioned the boy, Raegan's hand flew to his face in a stinging slap.
Consumed with fury and agony, she replied: âMitchel, you are unworthy! "You have no right to talk about our son."
Mitchel absorbed the blow, silently wishing she would hit him again.
In that way, there was a glimmer of hope.
In a hoarse voice, he pleaded, âRaegan, I'm willing to do anything if it makes things right.â
Coldly, Raegan replied, âI already said it. "We are going to get divorced."
Mitchel instinctively resisted: "I won't allow divorce."
However, Raegan calmly stated, "You'll come to your senses."
Because she was determined to do whatever it took to break their ties.
Sensing Raegan's inflexible stance, a wave of panic washed over Mitchel.
«Raegan, I can change. I will rectify what you don't like until you are happy. Can we start again?
Raegan gave a bittersweet laugh.
Do you want to start over with me, even after you walked away to be with Lauren during my pregnancy, and despite my calls to protect our baby, and after we lost our baby?
Was there anything more ridiculous?
Mitchel felt like his words contained a silent scream.
His eyes clouded with regret and his voice trembled.
«What does it take for you to forgive me?
Her gaze met his, unwavering.
"When you're gone."
