Rhett nodded and said, âYou are right, Miss Lawrence.â
When Nicole went to pick up the congee, she saw Conor hurrying away, deep in conversation on the phone. He didn't notice her, probably worried with some company emergency.
From a safe distance, Nicole listened to the conversation. âMr. Schultz's condition is not good. He can't go back to work yet. âWe need to find help and not depend on him for everything.â
Conor entered the elevator, while Nicole remained motionless for a few moments before returning to Rhett's side.
After finishing his congee, Rhett turned to Nicole: âMiss Lawrence, you should go home. The hospital has enough medical and nursing staff. I will manage on my own. Please donât bother.â
Sure enough, Nicole had to leave, intending to spend the afternoon with Austin. Thinking about hiring a caregiver for Rhett was a challenge given his circumstances. With the worry of him getting infected, finding someone willing to take on the responsibility was daunting.
Seeing her apprehension, Rhett joked, âDon't worry, Miss Lawrence. âIâm sure a hospital of this magnitude wouldnât let me end up here.â
Curious, Nicole asked, âHave you reported this to your girlfriend?â
âYour girlfriend?â Rhett looked momentarily surprised.
Nicole was quick to clarify, âWhen I went to get your thermos, I accidentally dropped your work ID. Sorry to butt in, but I assumed it was your coworker.â
Rhett's expression remained inscrutable, though a hint of nostalgia lingered, in stark contrast to his typically cheerful, caring lover.
But soon, Rhett regained his usual composure and said, "Yes, she was once my girlfriend, but she's not with us anymore."
Nicole, surprised, was silent for a moment before saying: "My apologies, I didn't know."
"You don't need to apologize. It happened a long time ago," Rhett replied.
"He had an exquisite charm," Nicole said.
Rhett's lips curved faintly. âIndeed. âShe had an infectious smile, a captivating personality, and a fervent affection for animals.â
Nicole felt deep sorrow for Rhett's late girlfriend, who was so sweet and kind, but passed away prematurely.
After some more talking, Rhett encouraged Nicole to leave.
Unable to argue, Nicole got up to leave, promising to visit him the next day and encouraging him to contact her if anything happened.
Rhett agreed.
Shortly after Nicole left, Rhett's phone range. A woman's voice on the other end asked, "Good morning, may I speak to Mr. Bates?"
âOf course,â Rhett replied.
"Mr. Bates, we are contacting you from the hospital. A few days ago, you were bitten by a patient suspected of being HIV positive. You were subsequently tested at our facility, correct?"
âWhat is it?â Rhett interjected, his tone conveying impatience.
