He took a bite of the apple. Then, he chewed it slowly as he calmed down.
It was the first time Mitchel left his ward after waking up.
He headed towards the elevator.
The elevator arrived. Matteo got out of it while Mitchel entered. Not seeing Mitchel's face at first, Matteo instinctively stepped aside to let the wheelchair pass.
But the next second, Matteo stopped dead. He hesitated for a moment before turning. After recognizing Mitchel's face, his mouth opened wide, taking a deep breath before exclaiming, âMr. Dixon!"
"I'm going back to the company," Mitchel said, wheeling his wheelchair to the elevator and pressing the button.
The elevator doors were about to close.
"Mr. Dixon, wait for me! shouted Matteo, who had not yet recovered from the shock. He hurried into the elevator.
The door closed.
Matteo looked at Mitchel and asked, âMr. Dixon, why are you suddenly coming back to the company?
âBusiness to discuss,â Mitchel replied dryly.
Since Mitchel woke up, he had become taciturn. He had managed to keep it brief, as it was clear that he didn't feel like saying anything else.
Sometimes, he would not even utter a single word for several consecutive days as he went about his business as usual. When Matteo asked him about his choice for meals, he only responded: "I'm not picky."
As Mitchel had become withdrawn and less vocal, an anxious Matteo turned to Luis for help.
At that time, Luis had spent the entire day locked in the laboratory, researching better materials for Mitchel's knee prosthesis.
At Matteo's words, Luis could only take a temporary pause in his investigations and go to the hospital every day to keep Mitchel company.
Luis was a lively and talkative person. Even if Mitchel didn't speak, he wouldn't feel uncomfortable. He could always start a topic and talk non-stop.
When Mitchel got angry, he would just say words like, "Don't you have anything else to do?" "It's not funny." "It's getting late." He used these words to push Luis away.
With Luis around, the issue of Mitchel's taciturnity improved a lot. Although he continued to speak only those few sentences a day, it was much more reassuring than the previous situation where he only spoke once every few days.
At that moment the elevator doors opened.
Matteo usually stood behind Mitchel and prepared to push the wheelchair.
But Mitchel stopped him and said lightly, "I'll do it myself."
Mitchel pressed the buttons and the wheelchair moved as he had instructed.
Upon reaching the car, Mitchel again refused Matteo's help. He used the armrest of the wheelchair for support and slowly got up. Then, he took the cane prepared by Matteo and leaned on the back seat.
