Chapter 545
Mistaking a Magnate for a Male Escort
âLeave us,â ordered Charlotte.
Her bodyguards collectively mumbled a âyesâ and retreated from the room.
Charlotte looked at Amanda. âCan you tell me now?â
Amanda sighed, her voice solemn. âBack when I really put you through hell and concealed everything about fatherâs affairs, Iâm assuming you think that Uncle Simon and I caused your fatherâs demise.â
âThereâs no doubt that we were after your fatherâs money, but we did not harm a single hair on his head. To put it bluntly, our family depended on your father to survive. It would not benefit us if any harm came to him. â
âHowever, there was something that we did hide from you.â
Amanda paused briefly as she plucked up the courage to make the admission. âYour father was murdered.â
âBy who?â asked Charlotte anxiously.
âWellâ¦â Amanda trailed off and frowned. She felt conflicted by this.
Simon then had to shake her a little to make her continue. âTell her.â
âI donât know who it is exactly,â said Amanda in a low voice. âBut I do know that it is someone from the Nacht family.â
Charlotte was astonished and her eyes widened in shock. The Nachts had a hand in this?
âDonât get me wrong, but Iâm not talking about Mr. Nacht. I really doubt itâs him.â Amanda hurriedly continued. âAt first, I only knew that it was someone who used the Nacht Group to put pressure on the Windt Corporation. It was a hostile takeover, so your father had no choice but to yield.â
Just then, Mr. Nacht and the Divine Corporation had yet to enter the domestic market, so this is why I donât think itâs him. It has to be someone else from the family, but Iâm just not sure who it is exactly.â
Charlotteâs emotions were a mess after she heard this. I donât think itâs Zachary either, but who could it be?
âI was there on the day of your fatherâs accident and remember him telling me something strange,â
whispered Simon. âHe mentioned that the Nacht family couldnât find out about you, or there would be trouble.â
âWhat do you mean?â asked Charlotte with suspicion in her tone.
âI donât know either.â Simon looked thoughtfully at her. âI think it might have something to do with your mother.â
âMy mother?â Charlotte was even more confused by this. Her mother had disappeared shortly after she was born. What did the troubles with her fatherâs company have to do with her mother?
âMaybe your mother had a spat with the Nacht family? This is purely speculation, of course. But Iâd met her before when I was young.â âAt that time, your father was still poor, and your mother seemed to be the child of a prestigious family.â
âAlthough I cannot determine what her background is, thereâs no mistaking the fact that sheâs lived a life of luxury. She was always followed around by a large number of bodyguards, and her trappings seemed to be no less than what our current Mr. Nacht would enjoy.
âYou also look exactly like her. The resemblance is remarkable.
Charlotte didnât say a word because her mind was still a jumble from trying to process what he told her.
What exactly is going on?
What she possessed now was vital information indeed. But instead of clarity, she ended up having more questions than answers.
âTry not to dwell on it.â Amanda, having read Charlotteâs emotions, interjected almost immediately. âI think Mr. Nacht is being sincere. He isnât like Hector at all! That beast of a man is ignorant and ruthless.
He knows that Helena is going to be the death of Luna, but heâs not lifting a finger to help.â
âWe were truly blinded by the situation. We even intentionally approved of Lunaâs marriage to him.
Come to think of it⦠This is probably retribution.â
Amanda paused and sighed deeply before continuing.
âCharlotte, the reason why Iâm telling you this is to warn you. Marrying into a rich family is complicated.
Even if Mr. Nacht is there to protect you, his family is anything but simple. There will be times where his protection will fail. You must be careful and ensure that you keep yourself and the kids safe.â
âYouâre right. I appreciate the warning.â
Charlotte was still reeling from the emotions she felt. But she knew that Amanda was right. Zachary might be a good man, but if his family truly had such terrible people, she would not be able to escape their clutches if anything happened.
