Chapter 62
Mistaking a Magnate for a Male Escort
The door to the room opened and a cold draft rushed into the room. A tall figure walked in, its shadow spilling across the bed menacingly.
Charlotte could feel her heartbeat speeding up as she stared at him like a startled kitten.
âWelcome back, Mr. Nacht!â Raina greeted.
Zachary waved his hand and Raina left the room with her eyes on the ground.
The moment the door closed, Zachary began to close in on Charlotte, making her flinch and burrow into her sheets. âW-What do you want?â
âAre you scared of me?â he asked, sitting down on the couch by the window.
Charlotte resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Who isnât?
âWhy did you bring me here?â she asked in the end, trying her best to look calm and collected.
âYou were injured during work hours, so I am obliged to make sure that youâre recovering well,â Zachary said. His voice was frigid and emotionless, but his gentle gaze gave away his true feelings. âHow are you doing? Youâre not dying, are you?â
âShut up!â Charlotte yelled impulsively, only to regret it immediately. âI wonât be sitting here talking to you if I had died, Sir!â
She emphasized the word âsirâ, as though she had resigned herself to fate.
âWesley Holt has been detained by the police,â Zachary said as he poured himself a cup of wine. He swirled the wine around as he continued, âSo, what rewards would you like to have for your heroic acts?â
âMoney!â Charlotte said without hesitating. âJust give me some money.â
âThatâs all you care about?â Zachary asked disdainfully.
âI have my elders andâ¦pets to take care of, and my salary isnât enough,â Charlotte protested. âBesides, I donât suppose youâre going to deduct that from my salary? Youâre not going to force me to pay for my own medical bills, right?â
Zachary glared at her and stood up to leave.
âThanks for visiting me, Mr. Nacht! Have a nice day!â she chirped after him as he walked out of the room.
She heaved a huge sigh of relief when the door closed behind him. I donât think he has found the chip yet!
I canât give him the chip yetâ¦heâll think that Iâm the culpritâ¦
I have to leave this place before anything bad happens!
She glanced at the little black box that contained the chip. Was it actually untouched?
Charlotte buried herself in the sheets and opened the box. Phew! Itâs still inside.
She glanced at her phone and realized that the battery was flat.
Stuffing the chip under her pillow, she called, âHey! Anyone here?â
Raina walked into the room just seconds later. âYes, Ms. Windt?â
âI want to go home. Can you get a cab for me?â Charlotte asked.
âApologies, Ms. Windt, but Mr. Nacht has requested that you stay until your injuries have healed,â Raina said with a slight bow of her head. âDo you need anything? I can help you get it.â
âMy family is waiting for me. Theyâll be worried if I donât return soon,â she said.
It was getting late, and Charlotteâs phone could not be turned on. Mrs. Berry and the kids must be worried sickâ¦
âWould you like to make a call first?â Raina suggested. âI presume that there isnât anyone around at home to take care of you?â
Charlotte nodded slowly in agreement. Mrs. Berry must be exhausted from care of the kids. I canât become yet another burden on her shoulders!
Besides, I donât want to scare the kidsâ¦
She asked for a phone charger from Raina so that she could give Mrs. Berry a call.
âHello? Mrs. Berry?â
âMiss, where did you go? I couldnât get in contact with youâ¦â Mrs. Berryâs panicked voice came through.
âMy phone ran out of battery just now,â she explained. âIâll be busy for the next few days, so I wonât be home.â
She did not want to lie, but neither did she want Mrs. Berry to worry for her.
âWhatâs going on?â Mrs. Berry asked. âJust tell me. The kids arenât around.â
âI got injured, so I need some time to recoverâ¦â
âWhat? What happened? How bad are your injuries?â
âIâm fine,â Charlotte said hurriedly. âItâs just a few scratches.â
âWhich hospital are you staying at? Iâll go and visit you.â
âMy boss assign a private doctor to me, so I canât go home for the moment. Sorry for burdening youâ¦â
âItâs fine. Iâll take care of the kids, and you should take care of yourself. Just give me a call if you need help,â Mrs. Berry said.
âThank you, Mrs. Berry.â
