Chapter 626
Mistaking a Magnate for a Male Escort
âDonât be afraid. Iâm fine,â Charlotte said as she patted Ellieâs back. âLet go of me for a bit. It seems like daddy is hurt.â
âDaddy!â The children remembered and ran over to him. âAre you all right, daddy?â
âDaddy, your arm is hurt!â Jamie exclaimed when he saw the severe burns on Zacharyâs arms. He was pale with fright.
âDaddy, you need a doctor,â Robbie said as he put out the embers on Zacharyâs clothes. âYour clothes are all scorched.â
âDaddy, does it hurt?â Ellie cried and covered her eyes.
Zachary paid no heed to the children. He stared at Charlotte the entire time with a mixture of rage, frustration but also love.
Charlotte scrambled over to him. âYou fool!â she yelled as she pulled on his arm. âWhy did you throw yourself into the fire like that?â
Before she finished her sentence, Zachary pulled into his embrace.
He was so forceful that he crashed Charlotteâs head against his chest.
âCharlotte, remember this,â Zachary yelled through gritted teeth. âNo matter what happens, youâre not allowed to come out on your own and place yourself in danger. Do you hear me?â
âYes, I do.â Charlotte nodded and swallowed.
âYou are not alone. You have me,â Zachary continued, âI will be here to help you even if the heavens came crashing down on you. Why wonât you ever remember that and cause me to worry every time?
What would I do if something happens to you? What about the children?â
âIâm sorry, I was wrong.â Charlotte sobbed into his chest, her arms around his waist. âI should not have made you worry and caused you to get hurt.â
âYou scared me to death, did you know that?â
Zachary bit her on the shoulder fiercely.
âOuch, that hurts!â Charlotte screamed in pain but she knew she deserved the punishment. He bit down so hard it almost bled.
âGood. Painful punishments make good lessons,â Zachary said as he pinched her cheek. âRemember this. If this happens again, I wonât be this lenient.â
âThere wonât be any next time,â Charlotte said as she gazed at his injuries. âLetâs go to the hospital. You need a doctor.â
Zachary bent down, placed the boys on his shoulders, and lifted Ellie in his arm. Holding Charlotteâs hand, they turned to depart.
âDaddy, you donât have to carry us if youâre hurt. Put us down, we can walk on our own.â
âYes, Daddy. There is heat emitting from your shirt. My butt is burnt from sitting on your shoulder.â
âAre there embers still on Daddyâs shirt? Will it burn me?â
âYou three are so inconsiderate. Iâm carrying you despite being hurt and all you care about is burning yourself.â
âNo, weâre worried that you might be too tired.â
âYes, we love you with all our hearts.â
âYes, whatever you say.â
The family walked through the smoke together slowly. They made a strange but lovely silhouette against the brightness of the burning wreckage.
Fifi flew over to them from the car. âDaddy, Mommy, Daddy, Mommy,â she squawked as she circled over their heads.
âFifi is here!â
âFifiâs wings look like they are a little burnt.â
âWhere did Fifi go earlier?â
âWhen something goes wrong, she is the first one to run and hide.â
âWhat an ungrateful bird!â
