Three Swedish Mountain Men: Chapter 25
Three Swedish Mountain Men: A Reverse Harem Romance
Cole and I heave the moose hide out of the car, then I stand back as the man counts out some cash. Heâs one of our regulars; a Sami craftsman who makes clothes out of the skin. Cole was called to clear up the roadkill a few days back, and now the hide is going to good use.
I cross my arms over my chest. Iâm freezing. The snow is coming down much thicker now, and the wind is getting uncomfortable.
Cole finishes the transaction. The man thanks us, then looks at the sky. âYou need to go home,â he says grimly. âThe roads wonât be safe much longer.â
We both nod. Itâs pretty clear that the storm thatâs about to hit will be a bad one.
âWeâll have to finish off after the snow clears,â Cole shouts over the wind as we head back to the car. I nod, too cold to talk, and slide inside, slamming the door shut. Immediately, I notice a frantic beeping. The radio we have in the dash is going haywire. I pick it up.
âHeyââ
Rivenâs voice barks down the line. âCome home. Now.â
âI know, I know. Weâre not gonna get caught in the storm.â Cole sparks the engine, and we reverse onto the road. âWeâre on our way back now.â
âI donât care about the bloody storm,â he spits out. I frown, sitting up straighter. Itâs been a long, long time since Iâve heard Riven sound this pissed. He always keeps it together in a crisis. Which means whateverâs wrong must be very, very wrong.
âWow, man,â I say lightly. âThanks for the concern over our safety. For a second there, I thought you cared.â
He huffs a deep breath. âItâs Daisy.â
Cole looks over sharply. âWhat about Daisy?â He asks, raising his voice. âIs she okay? Did something happen?â He taps the gas a little, speeding up.
âSheâs been lying to us.â
âAbout what?â
âAbout everything.â We turn a bend in the road, hitting the forest, and the radio crackles in my hand as we lose connection. I look up at the sky. Itâs darkening worryingly fast.
âAre we gonna be alright?â I ask Cole. âIâve never seen a storm come on this quick.â
âWeâll make it,â he mutters.
We drive out of the copse of trees and Rivenâs voice starts back up.
âEverything he said about her was true. Everything. Heââ
I cut him off. âLook, man, we didnât get any of that. Just hang on and wait until we get there. It canât be all that bad.â
âNo, Iââ
âCole is trying to drive through a blizzard. Shut up until we get there.â I slam the radio back into its holster.
When we make it to the cabin, the snow is coming down really badly, and the wind is picking up. We donât have time to park the car in the barn; we have to abandon it in the driveway and stagger the few metres to the door. As soon as we step inside, I see Riv pacing up and down in front of the fire. He doesnât even wait for us to take off our shoes.
âShe lied to us,â he announces, spinning on his heel. âHer name is Jenny Adams.â
âWhat?â I unwind my scarf, then push past him to the fire. âCan you give me a second to warm up?â
âDaisy,â he insists. âHer real name is Jenny Adams. She never lived in London. She didnât work at the school she told us. She isnât on break, she was fired.â
I frown. âWait, what? How do you know all this?â
âI spent the last twenty minutes talking to her boyfriend on the radio. She suddenly disappeared, and he was worried sick, so he tracked her all the way up here.â
I feel like Iâm falling.
âHer what?â Cole growls.
âHer boyfriend,â Riven snaps. âShe has a boyfriend. Hell, the way he was talking about her, I think theyâre pretty damn close to getting engaged.â
My heart thumps. Daisy doesnât have a boyfriend. Thereâs no way.
âI checked her passport and driving license,â he continues. âEverything he said was true.â
âWhy would she lie?â I ask. âShe must have had some reason. She did mention having a manipulative ex; maybe thatâs him?â
His eyes are burning. âI donât care. As soon as the storm is over, youâre driving her straight to the fucking airport.â
âWe need to talk to her,â Cole says. âShe can explain herself.â
I head for the corridor to find her, but Riv grabs my arm. âThereâs no point. Sheâs already proven that we canât trust her. Sheâll just lie even more to get herself out of it.â
âYou donât know thatââ
âYes, I do,â he growls. âItâs happened before. Or have you fucking forgotten?â
I frown. âDaisyâs nothing like Johanna.â
He shakes his head. âWeâre not talking to her. We need to find the truth ourselves.â He holds out his hand. âGive me your phone.â
âWhat?â
âGive me your phone. Itâs better at picking up signal than mine. I want to connect the laptop to the hotspot.â
I check my screen. âI donât have any bars.â
âIâll find somewhere in this Goddamn house which has signal. Give. Me. Your. Phone.â
Sighing, I give it up. He sits at the dining room table and fiddles with it, connecting it to the laptop, then opens up his browser. When the page doesnât load, he slams his hand down on the table. âFuck!â He bellows.
I jump. âJesus, man!â
Iâve never seen Riven this angry. Not even close. He looks like heâs about to lose it. I put a hand on his shoulder. âCalm down. What the Hell is up with you?â
He runs a hand over his face. âI almost did it again.â
âAlmost did what again?â
âAlmost fucked us all over. I justââ He takes a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. âI just asked her to stay with us.â
âWhat?â
âTo move in. Toâdate us. Officially. I asked her literally an hour ago.â
My heart leaps. âWhat did she say?â
âDoes it matter? Itâs obviously not going to happen now.â He scrubs a hand through his hair. Underneath all the anger, he looks completely miserable.
âYou love her,â I realise. âHoly shit. Youâre completely in love with her.â
He presses his lips tightly shut, not denying it. âI shouldâve known,â is all he says.
I frown. âWe donât actually know anything, yet. This might all be some big misunderstanding.â
He scowls up at me. âHow? I saw her fucking ID, she gave us a fake name! Why are you on her side?â
âShe believed me when I told her about my jail time. I literally told this girl that she was trapped in the mountains with a criminal, and she didnât even flinch. I think she deserves the benefit of the doubt.â He doesnât say anything. I sigh. âLook, Johanna lied to you for years. But I told you, man, that wasnât your fault.â
He clicks to refresh the webpage over and over. âIt was. I was the reason everything happened. I was the one who proposed to her. I was the one who testified against you in court. Everything was fine, until I fell for her.â
I shake my head. âShe was the reason everything happened. Not you. She was the evil bitch.â
âI told myself Iâd never let a woman trick me like that again. And Jenny did. She did it so much worse than Johanna. At least Johanna told us her real goddamn name!â
Suddenly, the laptop screen flickers white as Google finally loads up.
âFinally.â Riven leans forward and types Jenny Adams in the search bar.
I drop into a chair and watch, my heart racing. I have no idea whatâs going on, but the one thing I do know, is that I trust Daisy. I know whatever it is that sheâs done, sheâs a good person.
The name pulls back thousands of results. I squint at the first headline. Itâs a news article from The Express. High School Teacher Fired After P*rn Star History is Revealed. âDaisy does porn?â
âJenny,â Riv insists. âHer name is Jenny.â
âSheâs Daisy to me.â I reach over his shoulder and click on the article, skimming it.
I squint. Itâs hard to imagine Daisy as a porn star. I mean, she certainly has the body for it, sheâs sexy as fuck. But I remember how angry she got when Riv asked her to take off her shirt.
âI guess this is why she didnât want us knowing her real name,â Riv mutters.
âBut why? Why would we care about her doing porn? Itâs her business.â Like, yeah, itâs really awkward and shitty that the videos were sent round to the parents of her students; but the article said they got leaked. Itâs not like she was playing them in her homeroom.
Cole doesnât say anything.
Riv goes back to the search page and scrolls through the results. Thereâs a lot of porn sites listed. He clicks on one at random.
I grimace. âDude. Shouldnât we go get her for this? Sheâs literally in the next room. It feels weird to watch a video of her having sex without her.â
âI want to know the truth,â he gets out. I sigh as Daisy pops up on the screen. Rivâs always been like this. When heâs faced with a problem, he has to solve it. Heâs going to Sherlock this mystery until heâs worked out exactly whatâs happening.
I focus on the video. Itâs of Daisy sitting on the bed in a t-shirt and panties, kissing a guy. Iâm surprised by the jealousy that stabs through me when I see his hand on her thigh.
âDo we have to watch this,â I moan. âI said I like to watch, but not just random guysââ
âShut up.â
âHeâs completely missing that spot on her neck she likesââ
âEli. Shut. Up.â
I sigh, slumping back in my chair, and let the tape roll. Iâve got a bad feeling about this. The further on we get into the video, the worse it gets.
Not to brag, but Iâm pretty familiar with porn. Iâm honestly somewhat of a connoisseur. I prefer to have an actual, real-life woman in my arms, but after five years of living in the wilderness, stuck inside during bad weather, Iâve become pretty familiar with sex tapes.
This isnât a sex tape.
This isnât sex tape sex. Thereâs no dirty talk or strip teases. None of it seems performed. Sheâs not trying to position herself so she looks good on the camera, arching her back or sucking in her stomach. Sheâs wearing plain black panties. Yeah, they obviously look amazing on her; but if I were a woman filming herself having sex, Iâd probably pick out something a bit nicer.
The two of them start messing around. As she rolls on top of the guy, I hear sheâs talking about her classes for the day. His face has been cropped out, but hers is perfectly clear.
This isnât porn, I realise. Itâs not performed at all. Itâs just domestic, comfortable, loving-partner sex. She doesnât look at the camera once as she reaches for the hem of her shirt. As she starts to lift it up, I slam my finger on the space button, pausing it. I feel sick. âDude. I donât think she knew that was being filmed.â
Cole stands up, scraping out his chair. âFuck this. Iâm going to find her. Turn that shit off.â
Riven frowns. âWaitââ
âNo,â Cole snaps, leaving the room. âOff.â
I x out of the clip, checking the rest of the page, and feel myself go cold as I see the number of views on the video. Oh my God.
Riv pulls off his glasses and rubs his eyes. âShe said someone used her,â he says quietly. âRemember? The first night we slept with her.â
âApparently, someone is the whole bloody internet,â I get out through gritted teeth. âSheâs hit the trending page.â I guess after she got into the news, the video must have blown up. I scroll down to the comments.
I have to look away as nausea rises in my throat. God. How long has she been putting up with this? I check the upload date. The video was only released about a week before we met her. Everything starts falling into place. Someone posted this video of her online and sent it to the faculty of her school. It went viral after a bunch of news sites reported on the story. She packed a bag and just left.
âShe said she had an ex manipulate her to stay with him,â I remember. âDo you think heââ
The colour drops out of Rivenâs face. He stands, but before he can go find her, Cole reappears in the doorway.
âYou fucking idiot,â he snarls. âYou. Fucking. Idiot.â
âWhere is she?â Riven asks quietly.
Cole doesnât say anything. Just slaps a piece of paper onto the table and storms towards the front door. He starts rooting through the coats. Riven doesnât move, so I pick it up to read aloud.
âCole, Eli, and Riven. I just wanted to say sorry. Iâm sorry for lying to you. None of you deserved it. Youâve all been so kind, and I took advantage of that. You three saved my life, and the last few weeks have helped me more than you can understand.
Pretty much everything I told you about myself was a lie. Where I lived, where I worked, why Iâm here. My name. I really never meant to hurt any of you. But I broke all of your trust, and that was an awful thing to do. Iâm going to catch the next flight back home.
Iâm so, so, so sorry,
Daisy.â
I put the paper down. Silence fills the room.
âNo,â Riven says. His voice is low. âNo.â
I turn to look out of the window. The storm has hit us full force. The wind is screeching, snow is falling so thickly all I can make out is white.
I canât speak. My heart is thumping out of my chest.
âHer coat, wallet and shoes are gone,â Cole says, stamping towards us. âHow long ago did she leave?â
âI donât know. IâI didnât see her going.â
âShe obviously left in a hurry. She didnât take any of her things.â Coleâs blue eyes burn. âWhen did you fight with her?â
âI guess⦠thirty minutes ago?â
I close my eyes. Sheâs dead. Thereâs no way sheâll have made it to the village in time. And thereâs no way sheâll survive in the blizzard for that long. She wouldâve gotten caught in the storm before she even got to the road.
Sheâs dead.
Riven surges to his feet and heads to the front door. âIâm going to find her.â He grabs his coat from the peg and shrugs it on, his hands fumbling with the buttons.
âNo.â Cole pushes him back. âYouâd be useless. Stay here in case she comes back.â He pulls on his own boots. âEli, where are my survival packs?â
I donât say anything. I keep staring out of the window. I feel like my insides have been frozen.
Sheâs dead.
Sheâs dead, and Iâm pretty sure Iâm in love with her.
âEli!â Cole barks. âWhere are the survival packs?â
I force my mouth to work. âTop shelf.â
He grunts and grabs one of the backpacks, slinging it over his shoulder.
Riven goes to take one, too. âEli can stay here. Iâll come too.â
âNo!â Cole turns on him. âListen to me. This is my job, so let me fucking do it!â
âBut she could be dying!â
âYouâll just slow me down. Iâll have two people to keep alive.â
âI can look after myself.â
âIt would be a suicide mission.â
âI donât fucking care.â
Coleâs nostrils flare. In one quick movement, he grabs Riv by the front of the shirt and slams him hard into the wall. âYouâre. Staying. Here.â
âButââ
âIâM NOT LOSING BOTH OF YOU!â Cole roars, getting right in his face. âYOUâVE ALREADY TAKEN HER AWAY FROM ME, YOUâRE NOT FUCKING DYING AS WELL!â
Riven pales. Cole holds him in place for a few seconds, chest heaving. Finally, Riven gives him a small nod.
âGo,â he says hoarsely.
Cole steps back, pulls on his goggles, and unlocks the front door. Instantly, the wind slams it open. The noise is deafening. Snow whirls into the corridor, flying over the two men, covering the floor.
I close my eyes. Thereâs no way she made it. No way in Hell.
Cole tightens his hands on his pack and steps outside. Riven heaves the door shut after him. When the roar of the wind cuts out, the house is eerily silent.
âI shouted at her,â he says, his voice empty.
I wet my lips. âI think I loved her.â
He puts his face in his hands. âIâm so sorry,â he rasps. âI thoughtââ
âYou thought.â I jump to my feet. Anger burns in my throat. âYou thought. You didnât know. You didnât even ask her, for Godâs sake.â I turn to go.
âEliââ
âDonât fucking talk to me.â
I head to my room, leaving him standing alone in the living room, with the laptop still open on the video of her.
