Chapter 15

Giving Thanks And A Bunch Of Attitude.

My New Stepbrother.

This Day Has Been... Well.. Horrible.

My grandmother woke me up early in the morning. My shower was cold, as was my mother. My stupid little brother threw up on me when I got out of the shower, forcing me to take an even colder shower.

My mom over stirred the food and my grandmother blamed me. Grandpa dropped a glass plate, grandmother blamed me. She spilled water, she blamed me.

I don't know, but I guess everything was just my fault. I tried calling my dad but he just told me that everything was going to get better and to stick through until dinner. I sighed and hung up on him, mid-sentence.

Tyler came early, which, thank god for it. I immediately dragged him to my room and complained. I talked until a knock on my door stopped me. I opened the door and my mom stood outside the room.

"Your grandmother wanted me to tell you to prepare for dinner. You have 30 minutes." She nodded and walked away.

I frowned and closed the door. "Are you ready for the worst night of your life?" He smiled and stood from the bed.

"Any night with you, will never be a bad night." He kissed me on my forehead before opening the door and leading me out.

~~~
Dinner started off quiet. But with my luck, it didn't stay that way.
"So, Tyler. What college are you planning to attend?" My grandmother eyed Tyler while he eyed his plate.
"I haven't really thought about it..." He stuffed a piece of food into his mouth.
"Well haven't you thought about it? Surely you have, I mean its senior year, summers almost here, the school year is almost over. If you're going to date my grand--"
"Grandmother, please." She looked at me and shrugged before she took a sip out of her wine glass.
"I'm just saying..." She smiled and my mother rolled her eyes.
"I suppose you have something to say too?" I directed my attention to my mother.
She looked surprised that I addressed her but quickly masked it with seriousness. "Technically, your grandmother is right. If your going to grow up successful like me --"
"Ooooohhh Nooo. You can stop right there. If I were anything like you, I would have already left my family!" I dropped my fork and looked at my mother who not subject to hiding her surprise this time.
"How dare you speak to me like that. I am still your mother young lady." I stood up from the table.
"I have no mother. I would just like to express that. My mother died the moment she left my father for another man. And I wouldn't want to be anything like her. I wouldn't want to hate my daughter and abandoned her. I wouldn't go off and be happy with someone else, another family and not even call once to check up on my daughter, so you know what, I'm happy I'm not like her. Because I wouldn't want to be a horrible bitch!" I saw a bit of hurt flash in her eyes, I didn't care. "Happy thanksgiving." I walked out of the dining hall and outside.
I called my dad and when he didn't answer I texted him. "Push came to shove, and right now I want to push them all into a lake."
I heard the door opened and Tyler placed his hand on my shoulder. "You okay?" I shook my head and sat down on the porch step and put my head in my hands.
"All the anger, everything from all those years. It came out at once. I didn't mean for it to. I was so ready to say more, but I was afraid I was going to cry so I just left." I let a stray tear fall from my eyes. " Did you see how she held on to him. She's never... Ever... Shown me that much love. She can't even look me in my eyes without looking like she wants to puke. I'm her biggest mistake. I'm the fall before her rise." And suddenly, I was crying. Not just one tear but a lot.
He hugged me to his chest and the lights of a car appeared in the driveway. I expected my dad to get out of the car but it was none other than Mason. He walked to the steps and Tyler let go of me.
"What happen? Are you okay? You dad said that--" Tyler stood from the step and turned towards Mason.
"She's Fine." Mason frowned and directed his attention to Tyler.
"I don't remember asking you?"
"Well I remember answering perfectly fine."
"Guys, just stop. I'll text you tomorrow Tyler. Come on Mason." I grabbed Mason's hand and dragged him to the car.
Tyler stood at the door and I'm assuming he stayed that way until we left. I leaned my head against the window and sighed. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mason turn to look at me. "What happen tonight."
"I yelled at her." I took my head off the window and frowned at Mason who was looking at me more than the road. "I don't want to talk about it anymore. Pay attention to the road or we'll crash." He nodded slightly and directed his attention back to the road. I turned on the radio to rid of the awkward silence, but it just stood as background noise mostly.
We arrived home quickly and I ran up to my room. I didn't want to talk to anyone, I just wanted to sleep. But unfortunately, when I walked in my room, my dad was waiting on my bed.
"Your grandfather called, he said you were upset." He pat the spot next to the bed and asked for me to sit down. I walked over slowly and plopped down on the bed. "What happen tonight?"
"She happened dad. She told me if I wanted to be anything like her d listen to grandmother. I lost it right then and there. I yelled at her, it was a mixture of built up anger and hurt. I called her a horrible bitch." I though my dad was going to be angry but instead he hugged me, the way he used to when mom stayed at work on my birthdays.
"I hate her so much."
I felt my dad shake his head. "You don't hate her." I pulled away from my dads hug and frowned.
"No dad, I do. And you should
to, she left you. She left us." He frowned.
"I know, but she did it because she wasn't happy."
"And you're okay with her not being happy with her own daughter?!"
"I never said that. I didn't. I'm saying, I wanted her to be happy, and she wasn't happy with me, so I let her go."
I shook my head and wiped away the tears streaming down my face. "She's happier with them. I've never seen her look at me the way she looked at that baby." The disgust was evident in my voice and I made sure it was.
"She loved you."
"She has a funny way of showing it."
I ended up eating with my dad and Kelly and eventually Mason joined in. It was one of the best thanksgivings I've had in a while.
~~~

I woke up early the next morning, deeply regretting it.

Kelly was up early as usual and making breakfast in the kitchen. She turned around and smiled. "Good Morning Doll."

I waved at her and sat down at the table where I directed my attention to my phone. I thought about texting Tyler but decided I'd call him later today.

Kelly sat a plate down in front of me and smiled and she pranced off back into the kitchen. I was a little to tired to eat and ended up lifting the fork up to my mouth only to drop it back on the plate. I scouted the plate over before putting my head on the table.

I dozed off and after a few minutes or so? I felt a hand on my shoulder, assuming it was Kelly I sat up and smiled only to see Maya.

"Morning sleeping beauty." She smiled and sat next to me and not before long I heard her eating my food.

"What are you doing here?" She put the fork down on the plate and looked at me.

"Did you forget?" I blinked a few times and she stared at me. "It's Black Friday, we always go shopping on Black Friday..." She seemed disappointed that I had forgotten. "It's fine, go hurry get dressed before all the good stuff is taken from my favorite store."

I quickly showered and dressed and threw my hair into a messy bun. As I was walking back downstairs I heard Mason speaking through the door, he must have been on the phone.

"No lily, I can't do this anymore... No there's no one else, I'm just... Yeah, I'll be over in a second... Okay." I heard footsteps and the door to his room opened. He looked down towards me and frowned. I directed my attention towards the floor before walking back downstairs where Maya was waiting patiently.

She jumped off the couch before smiling. "Let's go!" She grabbed my hand and dragged me out to the car. I sat in the car and she turned the music up before pulling off and heading towards the mall. "Hey, you okay? Your dad had called and told me that you needed a day out... You saw your mom?.." She looked over in my direction and placed her hand over mine before giving it a tight squeeze.

"Yeah, she was there...but you know, I'm okay. Let's not talk about it. Let's talk about shopping." She gave a sympathetic smile before switching subjects. Whole she blabbed about a dress she had seen, I focused my attention to my phone. I had decided against calling Tyler and just sent him a quick text. I felt bad because yesterday I left with Mason, but I just wanted to go home. And maybe the fact that it was with Mason may have played a bit into it.

We pulled into a parking space and Maya giddily dragged me into the mall and from store to store. Despite my mood, I managed to put on an act for Maya, who by the way love today because of all the sales her favorite stores had. I enjoyed it to because it was something Maya and I had done with my dad as kids. He had brought us every year but he eventually stopped coming because he had to work and we became old enough to go on our own.

We took break and walked to the food court where Maya got two smoothies and fries. What we normally got here. We were talking when I saw her. Out of all people, out all places. Maya must have noticed the shock on my face because she snapped her fingers in front of my face. "What is it?"

"My mom."
