Meeting Him.
My New Stepbrother.
"Charlie, you're going to be late for the 3rd time this week. Come on get up."
"Go away dad, I'm already up."
"But you're still in bed."
"You have to give the bed time, it has separation anxiety."
"Exactly how much sleep did you get?"
"Enough."
"Alright, well breakfast is ready so get up and shower, be down in 30 min or I'll send the cat." He left out of the room and closed the behind. I jumped up and made sure to lock the cat door we had installed so Prissy could have access to all rooms. Prissy was all white and fat. We got her when I was two and I adored her ever since then. But in the morning she was mean.
I ran in the bathroom and slipped on the tiles. Luckily, I caught my balance on the sink before the full wipeout had occurred. Turning on the water I hopped in and since I figured I didn't need to spend my whole life in here, at least not today, I quickly washed up and got out. Grabbing my red pen, I carefully placed dots around my face. Brushing my hair into an obnoxiously high ponytail, I completed the look with my glasses. Okay, so the naturally dotted face was a lie, but high school is brutal if you're not popular. So I chose a different approach to it. Pretend to be a nerd. The braces helped out a lot. Throwing on my sweats and a baggy shirt, quickly ran downstairs where dad and Prissy waited for me. Prissy waited at the table in her favorite chair while dad set everyone's select foods onto the table.
"Charlie, why do you do this to your face?"
"What exactly are you talking about dad?"
"The dots, Charlie. The dots." He picked up his fork and shoved the food into his mouth. All while Prissy was looking back and forth between us.
"You were in high school before right? You know how cruel those kids can be. If they don't notice, you're safe."
"But you're beautiful, why would they even think about hurting you?"
"Because I'm a nobody, that's why." I looked at my phone clock cursing aloud. "I'm late nobody. Bye dad." I hopped out my chair and kissed his cheek.
"Charls wait, I forgot to tell you, but Kelly invited us over for dinner, her son will be there so you can finally meet him."
"Oh Great."
"Oh you have to dress up, that means no red dots. And a dress." I rolled my eyes and trudged out the door. Getting in the car, I put my Lana Del Ray CD and Summer Time Sadness came on. The drive to the school wasn't that long but I had to pick up my best friend Maya and her sister. Maya was my best friend since 1st grade and her sister was like my older sister.
"Late"
"Once again"
"Guys cut me some slack okay." Once they got all settled in, I drove off.
I pulled in the school's parking lot and there was a couple of people standing by their cars. We all got out and walked in the school and I almost expected the hallways to be empty. Unfortunately, luck is never in my favor. The Hallway was full and or a moment, it seemed like there was more people in there than there normally was. I pushed my way through the hall accidentally bumping into one of the jock from the football team. This particular group were the most known people of the school. There was the quarterback, Mason. The Cheerleader, his girlfriend, Lily. Mason was your average day hot guy. Black hair, blue eyes perfect height, perfect face, and perfect muscles. Oh and then there's Lily. Blonde hair, green eyes, bitchy attitude.
"Watch where you're going, nerd."
"Uh-um I-I-I'm sorry." I put my head down and walked faster through the hall.
With no need to go to my locker, I rushed straight to class, breathing a sigh of relief because I was the first here. I headed to my seat in the back by the window. It was secluded. Well not really... It was secluded because I spent more time in my own world rather than paying attention in class. The final bell rung and all the students began to pour into the class, in a loud and obnoxious manner. The teacher, whose name is obviously not important right now, walked in and shut the door behind him. He started his normal lecture and I went into my normal daze. Oblivious to anything and everyone around me... Until they walked in. Laughing and smiling like they ruled the place. Mr. What's his face cleared his throat and calmly directed them to their seats. And of course, their seats were located near me.
"Oh look, it's the nerd who thought it was okay to bump into my boyfriend."
I rolled my eyes at the unwanted attention from the biggest bitch of them all. "Lily, chill she said sorry." That comment came from Maya.
Although she is my best friend, she chose to high school. Can't beat them? Join them. "No one asked you, Maya. But thanks for the input."
"And no one asked you to talk during my lesson but who really listens nowadays." The teacher directed his attention towards Lily who was standing.
"Either sit and listen or go wait for your boyfriend at the principal's office, I'm almost positive he'll be down there soon.
"I didn't do anything Mr. Perkins." Mason said in a joking tone.
"You didn't do anything yet. That's the problem Mr. Bradley." Mr. Perkins stated in an irritated tone. This was going to be a long hour. I put my head on the desk and blocked out all the noise. I stayed in my own little world until the bell rung. I waited till everyone else cleared the class to even get out of my seat. When everyone was gone, I grabbed my things and rushed out of class.
The rest of the day sort of dragged on. Luckily for me, Lily didn't speak to me for the rest of day. But she did send me a couple of nasty looks throughout the day.
After the final bell, I went to my locker to grab my things and rushed off to the car. Any second longer in this school and I swear I'll start crying. I started my normal drive home, stopping at the store to pick up jelly beans. When I got home prissy was sitting on the couch staring at me. Finally, she let out a big meow to tell me that she was hungry. "Alright, prissy. Jeez. Can't even be home for 5 minutes before I get told to do something, and what's even worse it was by a cat. I walked into the kitchen and grabbed her food out of the cabinet and poured some her bowl and called her. She hopped off the couch and came prancing through the kitchen to her food bowl. I ran upstairs to take a quick shower before I started getting ready for the stupid dinner tonight.
This shower took a little longer seeing as I had to scrub the red dots off of my face. Getting out of the shower, I quickly wrapped a towel around my torso, hoping not to drip water on the carpet because honestly, I would never hear the end of it. I went into my closet and began to look for a dress. Wearing dresses wasn't normal for me. Of course I owned them, I'm a girl. Eventually after throwing every dress I own on the bed, I decided on a black dress that hugged the waist. The back was open and a bow complemented the back. The bow wasn't so big to where everyone would think I look completely stupid, but not so small that it looked weird.
Before putting on my dress, I curled my hair. I rarely ever curl my hair. Why? Because the weather tends to disagree with me. First time I curled my hair, it hailed. I tried again and it thunder stormed. I always thought it was a coincidence. But then, I decided to curl it again one day and it snowed. Normally snow isn't bad. But when there's a hail storm after, it starts to get pretty bad. And then it gets a bit worse when it starts to rain. So ya, after thinking about all my bad experiences, I straightened my hair back out. Wrapping my robe tightly around my body, I rushed downstairs to the bathroom where I hid all my makeup from the little demon children I call my cousins. Prissy was lying in a box that sat next to her bed. Cats are weird. Lovable, but weird. I quickly applied some eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss.
The door opened and dad rushed in, flattening the nonexistent wrinkles in his pants. "You're not ready yet?"
"Yeah I am, dad... What you don't like my dress?" I stated solemnly pointing to my robe.
"Charlotte, please go get dressed, I don't want to be late to this dinner." My dad said in an exasperated tone.
He went back to straightening his pants. "Why don't you try for the wrinkles in your face, not your pants?"
"CHARLOTTE."
"Sorry Dad." I rushed up the stairs and quickly put on my dress and a pair of black flats white bows on the front. I like bows, judge me. Brushing my hair for the final time, I ran downstairs. "I'm rea-- Dad where are your pants?" My dad was pacing around the living room in his boxer shorts. EW.
"I had to put them in the dryer, I would have ironed them but I didn't have time."
"Dad, as much as I love you, and boy do I love you... but seriously, put on some pants."
He ran into the laundry room and grabbed the pants he had previously worn and much to my satisfaction, he put them on and we quickly left the house with my dad ranting because apparently we were late, and it was "my fault."
We got to Kelly's house fairly quick. It wasn't what I expected it to be either. It was.... Big. Turns out Kelly was rich... and a doctor. I'm not going to go into detail on how nice the house was because honestly that would take up a whole story but just know that it was really nice. We went up to the door and rang the doorbell. I expected and servant to open it but instead there was an overenthusiastic Kelly "Sorry, Benjamin is still setting the table."
"Oh it's no problem darling." He gave her kiss on the cheek and she directed her attention towards me.
"Oh! And you must be Charlotte Rose. Oh gosh Mike, you under-exaggerated her beauty. She is gorgeous." She held out her hand and I slowly took it hoping she wouldn't notice the copious amounts of sweat drenching my hand.
"Why thank you and you can just call me Charlie please."
"Will do, come in please. Mason will be down soon."
"Mason? Is that your dog?"
"No my son."
"Oh." She gave me a sweet smile before yelling upstairs to let her son know there were guest here. There was a pounding on the stairs before the sex god came into my vision. Mason Bradley. The one I bumped into early in the day. The one who's girlfriend got sent to the principal's office because of me. The one I loved since 3rd grade. I slide behind my dad in attempt to go unnoticed.
"Mason, this is... oh where'd she go... Oh there she is. Come on out don't be shy. Mason this is Charlotte Rose. "
"Call me Charlie." I attempted to smile but I assume I looked pretty stupid. He gave one of his heart stopping smiles and trust me, I almost fainted. I was waiting for the realization as to who I was to click in but when it didn't happen, I sighed in relief.
"I'm Mason. It's nice to meet you, Charlie."
The way he said my name almost made me die. "I-It's nice to meet you too." I inwardly slapped myself for stumbling over my words in front of him and smiled.
"Well, we'll leave you two to talk... Mike, do you want a drink?"
They soon left the hall and left me and Mason to... talk. He led me into the living room. And just when I thought this house couldn't get any better. This living room is amazing.
"Thanks, my mother really likes to focus on interior design." I hadn't realized I had spoken my thoughts aloud.
He sat down on a cream colored couch while I stood awkwardly near the wall, "Are ya, um going to sit down?"
"I'd rather not..." I spoke in a quiet voice. My strangeness didn't go unnoticed to him and he let out a small chuckle.
"Come on, I don't bite... yet." I let out a small gasp as he added on the last part. "I'm kidding. Seriously, please sit down... I'd really like to get to know you." I awkwardly walked over to the couch opposite of the one he sat on. I slowly sat down, feeling his piercing gaze as I possibly got even weirder in his eyes.
"So umm, why don't I see you around school, I mean, it's kind of hard to not notice a gorgeous girl like you."
I broke into coughing fit. I literally could not breathe. "Um what?"
"I said you were gorgeous. Why is that so surprising, it's obviously true."
And again, I start choking on the air. "I like to keep to myself." I say, partly lying and partly telling the truth.
"Why?" He prods on.
I offer him a simple 'because it's better that way' but he doesn't except it. He changes the subject nonetheless. I am truly thankful for that. I'd rather not spend my afternoon explaining to someone I just met that I hide behind hideous red dots and somewhat fake braces. Oh and yeah, I forget to mention, I actually don't need braces anymore... it's a fake set. The things you can buy off the internet surprise me sometimes. Of course I need braces but I just use something that the dentist recommended to keep the straightening process hidden. She suggested that high school could be a bit difficult. And with the glasses I wore that day, I suspects she thought I didn't need any more humiliation. Not that glasses and braces are humiliating. It's just when you have a face like mine... the combination doesn't exactly appeal to it.
"So what do you think?"
"Huh?" Mason's eyes are on me and I realize soon that I completely went into a daze during the conversation.
"I said what do you think? You were listening right?"
NO. "Yeah, I uh, uh I think it's great." A horrified look flashes on to his face and I immediately rethink my answer. "I mean it's uh bad? Neutral? Shit."
By now I am hoping it is obvious that the topic we-well he- were discussing, I was oblivious to it. He let out a small chuckle. "I'm only joking. I noticed you sort dazed off into your own world and I took advantage of it. We weren't talking about anything important, trust me." He smiled and I attempted to chuckle but all that came out was this really bad choking sound. He looked at me and I could tell he was trying to keep his cool after me sounding what resembled a dying ducking.
Kelly came into the living room and smiled. "Dinner is ready." I sighed a breath of relief and then I trailed behind Kelly as she led us into the dining room. I took the seat across from Mason. Luckily there was a big plant that kept him from actually seeing my face. I don't know why I was so nervous around him. I guess having liked him since elementary could have something to do with it.
The server brought out the well prepared food and placed a tray in front of everyone. I thanked him and he continued on his way, passing out plates of food to everyone seated at the table. Everyone began eating but I honestly didn't care for the food. I preferred pizza rolls but before we came, dad said it was best I keep my comments to myself tonight, so I ate the food in silence. My dad and Mason started talking about some foolish game that was on TV the other day. Kelly soon the joined the conversation, leaving me to daze off on my own. That is until my dad stood from his seat.
Then proceeded to bend down on one knee.
In front of Kelly.
With a box.
That held a ring.
Oh great.
