Wicked Devil: Chapter 2
Wicked Devil: A Standalone Enemies-to-Lovers Romance (Boys of Sun Valley Book 1)
The school was informed of my arrival late last week, so they had everything ready for me. I got my schedule from the school counselorâMr. Kempâalong with a few forms he said Iâd need to take home and bring back with Geraldâs signature. I got my locker assignment and combination, though if Sun Valley High is anything like my old school, it would sit empty most of the year. Iâll lug my books in my backpack between classes rather than dropping them off in my locker to save on time.
Since Sun Valley High is on a trimester system, I only have four classes. English, Calculus, Spanish 4, and Welding. Calculus will kick my butt. Math was never my strong suit. But the rest should be easy enough to get caught up on.
âYour, umm, Janessa informed me of your ⦠situation,â Mr. Kemp says, a sympathetic frown tugging at his features. âIf you need to talk to anyone, my office door is always open.â
Always the diligent assistant. Janessa has taken care of everything, including airing my business. Wonderful.
âThanks.â I nod, not that I have any plans of taking him up on the offer. But Mr. Kemp seems nice enough. Heâs younger than most of the faculty Iâve seen so far. Late twenties, maybe early thirties. He has reddish brown hair and dark blue eyes. Heâs attractive enough and carries an easy smile. He seems to be one of the cool staff members, judging by the number of students shouting out hellos when they walk past his office door. A lot of âYo, Mr. K.â But I donât need a shoulder to cry on and I prefer not to build relationships with guidance counselors. They have the tendency to make things weird. I learned that my freshman year and I donât plan on having a repeat incident.
Besides, heâs a stranger. I havenât bothered to confide in my new dad. Why on earth would I confide in him?
The warning bell rings signaling that first period is about to start. I stand up to leave, tucking my schedule into the front pocket of my pants. Before I can make it out of his office, a boy saunters in with a swagger and, what Iâm sure, is his perpetual smirk. He tilts his head toward Mr. Kemp in greeting before plopping down in the chair I just vacated, not bothering to spare me a glance.
Rude. But, whatever. Iâm the new girl. If Sun Valley High is anything like virtually every other high school in America, the students here wonât be welcoming. But all of that is a-okay. I donât need to make friends here. I have Julio, Gabe, and Felix to get back to. I donât plan on sticking around long once I graduate.
âMr. Valdez. To what do I owe the pleasure?â Mr. Kemp says with a stern tone, but I donât miss the slight curve to his mouth. I know right away that this guy, Valdez, is one of those kids who spends a lot of time in the office. Thereâs an air of smug hostility about him, but Mr. Kemp doesnât seem bothered by it. He seems ⦠amused.
When the boy finally looks my way, he gives me a slow once-over before his upper lip curls in disgust. He mutters, âChiflada,â under his breath with a roll of his pretty brown eyes.
âHey!â I snap. He doesnât know me and I donât care how cute he is, I am not a spoiled brat.
He sneers at me and turns back to Mr. Kemp without bothering to respond to my outburst, a bored look on his face.
âRoman.â There was a warning in there, but the boy didnât seem to care.
Mr. Kemp waits.
My cheeks heat and Iâm practically vibrating with irritation.
âWhat? Look at her.â Roman shrugs. âJust calling it like I see it.â
I bite my bottom lip to keep from snapping at him again before turning to leave. I donât need this.
âMs. Ulrich,â Mr. Kemp calls out.
I freeze. âThatâs not my name.â Thereâs a bite in my tone I hadnât intended but what I said is true. Ulrich isnât my name. Gerald wants me to take his last name. Heâs some hotshot in town and thinks his name will help open doors for me, but I donât want it. Iâve been Alejandra RamirezâAllie for shortâfor the last seventeen years. I have zero plans of changing that in this life or the next.
Romanâs brows lift, sudden interest sparking over our exchange.
âMy apologies. Alejandra.â
âAllie,â I correct again.
He grimaces and tilts his head toward the guy. âAllie, this is Roman. Heâs a senior, like you. And he happens to also have first period English.â And Iâm supposed to care why? âHeâll show you to your first class and help you settle in. Think of him as your guide for the week.â
My mouth drops open and I donât miss the look he directs at Roman. This isnât optional for him. I gape at Mr. Kemp before finding my words. âNo, thanks. Iâm fine.â I try and wave him off.
He releases a sigh and leans back in his chair ignoring me completely. His eyes train on Roman who still has that bored expression on his face. âYou here because you mouthed off again?â
Roman shrugs. âMaybe.â
I roll my eyes. Heâs totally one of those guys. Heâs probably a jock too. He definitely looks like the athletic type. Broad shoulders, a muscular build. I can see the hint of a tattoo peeking out of the collar of his shirt too. Heâs a bad boy and he makes sure everyone knows it. Even his teachers.
I did not have time for a guy like him.
Mr. Kemp smiles. âWell then, rather than the usual detention, youâll have the pleasure of showing Allie around and helping her feel welcome. Sheâs new to Sun Valley High and doesnât know anyone. Be a model student for once and help the girl out.â
âIâm good,â Roman says. âIâll take the detention.â
Thank God.
Mr. Kemp folds his arms across his chest and raises a single brow. âYou sure about that? This is your third visit to my office this trimester which means youâll get a full week of detention instead of the usual one day. Youâll miss a weekâs worth of practiceâ¦â He trails off and levels Roman with a knowing look.
Roman curses. âThatâs bullshit.â He shoots out of his chair. âYou canât do that, Mr. K.â
âItâs out of my hands,â he says, his hands lifted in a placating gesture. âYouâre the one incapable of keeping your mouth shut. Now, Iâm not one to offer alternatives but I donât want to earn Coach Samsonâs wrath any more than you do. So, whatâll it be Mr. Valdez? The girl or detention?â
Roman shoots me a withering glare.
âWait, donât I get a say in this?â I do not need the kind of attention this will surely draw. I have every intention of blending in with the crowd. Being a nobody here at Sun Valley High. I have a feeling that anyone who associates with this Roman guy is not going to go by unnoticed. Heâs athletic, good-looking, and more arrogant than any other guy Iâve had the misfortune of crossing paths with, which can only mean one thing. Heâs popular. I donât do the popular crowd.
âNo,â both men say at the same time.
Urgh!
This is so unfair. Why am I being punished for this guyâs attitude?
After several tense seconds, Roman mutters out a âfineâ and storms past me. When I donât immediately move to follow, he glares back at me from the doorway. âYou coming or what? I donât have all day, vanilla.â
I bite the inside of my cheek but follow him.
Great. Looks like Iâm already off to a great start.
