Wicked Devil: Chapter 36
Wicked Devil: A Standalone Enemies-to-Lovers Romance (Boys of Sun Valley Book 1)
Allie took off ten minutes ago. I tried to convince her to let me give her a ride but as soon as Dom released her, she took off straight for her Audi with barely a backward glance.
I was tempted to go after her. I donât know what the hell came over me but seeing her like that, in the line of fire, Iâve never been so fucking scared in my life. My girl was in danger. My girl.
Fuck all the bullshit with her and Julio. Fuck the fact that she ghosted me. Sheâs mine. She ran off tonight but as soon as I get Dom settled, she and I are going to have words.
Itâs just the three of us now. Dom, me, and my pops. Weâre sitting in Dominiqueâs Escalade but Iâm in the driverâs seat. No way am I letting him drive himself home tonight. Dom gave my dad a recount of what happened, and one thing for sure is heads are going to roll Monday morning when my dad gets to his office. He assures Dominique that all of the officers will face consequences. Iâm almost positive the first asshole on scene will lose his badge. You canât be a racist prick on my dadâs force. He has zero tolerance for that shit.
âYou boys going to be alright tonight?â my dad asks.
âYeah. Iâll drive Dom home and crash at his place. What were you doing here, anyway?â I ask him.
Color is coming back to his face. He seems a little more like himself. âAllie called me. She was freaked out. I guess there was some dude outside and she didnât feel comfortable leaving the diner by herself.â
A stab of pain hits me in the gut when I realize she was afraid and she called him. Not me. But before I say anything, my pops curses.
I flick my gaze toward him, and he asks, âAre you two close with her?â
We both shake our heads. âUsed to be. We donât talk anymore,â I tell him.
He frowns but I have no idea why. What does he care whether or not I talk to Allie?
âWhatâs that mean exactly?â he asks.
I shrug, not wanting to get into it with him. Allie and I were on the outs but after tonight, I plan to rectify that. âNothing. Itâs whatever.â
His frown deepens and his eyes flicker with disappointment. âThat girlâs been through hell,â he says.
Anger rises up inside me. âHow would you know?â
He scrubs a hand over his face, and I know heâs going to give me some non-answer. Hell, no. Not this time. If he knows something about my girl, I should know it, too. âPops, how do you know Allie?â
His mouth tightens. Heâs quiet for a minute so I press again. âIf somethingâs going on, I should know. You have to tell me.â
âThe night of your game. The one your mother and I came to watch you play inâ¦â he hesitates.
âYeah? What about it?â I remember that heâd stepped out to make a phone call and then left shortly after. Mom said a case came up or some shit.
âShe was assaulted in the parking lot.â
Wait. What?
My chest seizes and my mouth drops open. âWhat do you mean, assaulted?â Was that why she wasnât at my game? Sheâd been hurt? Fuck. Sheâd been hurt and Iâd been a complete asshole. No wonder she didnât message me back.
His face hardens. âI donât want you spreading rumors about this girl, feel me?â
Dread settles deep in my stomach. âWhat kind of assault are we talking about here?â Thereâs only one that would warrant his tone, and I need him to confirm it.
âWe believe she was raped.â
I suck in a breath. And then I fucking explode. âWhat? Are you fucking kidding me right now?â I jump out of the driverâs seat and start pacing in front of the car, unable to remain still.
My dad and Dom both get out after me.
âFuck.â Then his words settle over me and I whirl on him. âWhat do you mean you think?â Either someone is raped or they arenât. There isnât really a gray area here.
âShe wouldnât consent to the rape kit. She told the nurses she was raped upon arrival and it was clear sheâd been when I found her. She wasââ He shakes his head. âIt doesnât matter. But she told the nurses about the assault when we got there. I rode in the ambulance with her. She had all the signs of a rape victim. Torn clothes. Bruises. All of it. But before the nurses could start the kit, some woman in a suit stormed in and tore out of there with her like she was on a mission. When me and another officer tried to confront her, she shut us down. The girlâs a minor. We couldnât question her without parental consent and they werenât giving it.â
I pull at my hair and resume my pacing. âAnd she was okay with that?â Goddammit. This is so much worse than I thought. Raped? Fuck. I iced her out and sheâd been raped.
Sheâd been in trouble today and sheâd called Dom. Not me. I fucked up. Sheâs been hurt and I royally fucked up.
My dad lifts his shoulders and releases a weary exhale. âI donât know. She was in shock. She shut down. I canât say I blame her.â He shakes his head. âWhoever hurt her made sure to leave their mark. I canât fault her for calling you when she saw a man outside.â He directs that statement to Dom, and I notice his eyes are no longer distant. Instead, theyâre alight with remembered fury.
âThe guy who hurt her?â
Pops shakes his head. âStill out there.â
Fuck.
