POLAR BEAR ARC CHAPTER 2
You Plan to Kill me with Meng?
It was the scent of a young male polar bear, very young, and posed little threat to an adult male polar bear.
If Otis hadn't been injured and was hungry when he encountered this polar bear, he would likely have killed him.
But now, Otis was injured and had plenty of food, so he had no interest in killing this young polar bear.
Back inside, Qiao Qixi was very worried that Otis would crawl through the gap in the wall and cause trouble.
Fortunately, Otis just stood there for a while and then left, seemingly disinterested.
The gap in the wall might have been a blind spot for the surveillance cameras, and the staff hadn't noticed it. This left Qiao Qixi with the risk of being attacked by his neighbor, making it hard for him to sleep.
To ensure a good night's sleep, Qiao Qixi felt it necessary to alert the staff to the gap.
So, after eating, he would wander around the gap, trying to draw the staff's attention.
However, doing so was like repeatedly dancing on the edge of death, as every time he appeared near the gap, Otis would be drawn over.
In other words, even Otis noticed, but the staff still didn't.
Were they that negligent?
Would the staff only notice the wall was down when Otis came over, chewed him to death with his sharp fangs?
Imagining his own death, Qiao Qixi's fur stood on end in fear.
He firmly believed that Otis wasn't coming over for now only because his injuries hadn't healed, making it difficult to climb the wall.
Once Otis recovered, he would definitely come over and finish him off.
As the saying goes, the first strike is the strongest. With a full belly, Qiao Qixi thought he should take action before Otis regained his strength, to alert the staff by wandering over.
This plan sounded like a suicide mission.
That morning, under the warm sun, Qiao Qixi once again peeked over the wall at Otis.
The big guy had half his body exposed outside, dozing in the sun, seemingly in a deep sleep.
Compared to the snow-white fur of Qiao Qixi, Otis's fur was not as white, with a hint of yellowish tint.
Qiao Qixi thought about it but didn't dare to act rashly.
Fine, let's wait and see.
Fortunately, after a few days, Otis still showed no interest in attacking Qiao Qixi. He didn't even chase Qiao Qixi away when he peeked over the wall.
That wasn't scientific, was it?
Over time, even someone as inexperienced as Qiao Qixi could see that Otis wasn't in good shape, not just physically.
Sure enough, Qiao Qixi overheard the staff saying that Otis seemed to be struggling with life at the rescue center and was a bit emotionally depressed.
Psychological issues in animals aren't unheard of. Even domestic cats and dogs sometimes fall into depressive moods.
If this continued, Otis might indeed be released back into the wild prematurely, which would be dangerous.
With a sea fish in his mouth, Qiao Qixi peeked at his neighbor, who had no energy or spirit. Even when he noticed Qiao Qixi, he just lay on the snow, lifting his eyelids slightly.
Was this a strategy?
Was he trying to lure Qiao Qixi over and then kill him?
That was a possibility.
But Qiao Qixi doubted polar bears had such intelligence.
As he debated whether to leave the fish and go, Otis moved in the distance, slowly approaching him.
Otis's figure resembled a small iceberg. Despite his current thinness, his aura remained intimidating.
Qiao Qixi was scared, but he could see that although Otis's gaze was wary, it didn't have the light of seeing prey.
This indicated that Otis didn't view him as prey.
Maintaining a calm facade, but internally panicking, Qiao Qixi watched the giant polar bear approach without retreating.
Polar bears, with their keen senses, could discern emotions and intentions. Qiao Qixi tried to hide his presence, though he didn't have much presence to hide in the first place.
Otis, as tall as the young polar bear on the wall, extended his neck to sniff the young male polar bear who appeared in his sight every day.
He was likely puzzled.
After all, polar bear cubs he encountered before never dared to hover under his nose; it was a suicidal act.
"......" Qiao Qixi, with the fish in his mouth, remained motionless, letting Otis scrutinize him with his deep, round eyes. Polar bear eyes were quite beautiful.
Big and round.
After sniffing the young bear for a while, Otis withdrew his curiosity and licked his lips.
His slow movements and lackluster eyes clearly conveyed his unhappiness to Qiao Qixi.
Qiao Qixi felt a bit sorry for him. A four-year-old prime polar bear shouldn't have such an expression.
He hoped that this polar bear would recover well at the rescue center and return to the wild to continue living.
The injured Otis rarely ventured outside. Drawn by Qiao Qixi, he took a walk and then returned to his spot to sunbathe and nap.
His whole demeanor screamed resistance to his current life.
"......" The live fish in Qiao Qixi's mouth wagged its tail. Determined, Qiao Qixi pushed off with his hind legs, and with a loud crash, the remaining part of the wall beneath him collapsed.
Damn......
Well, even as a young polar bear, he still weighed several hundred pounds.
The commotion drew Otis's attention again, lazily watching the scene unfold.
Qiao Qixi shook his thick fur and walked toward Otis with the fish in his mouth.
Finally, the surveillance cameras caught sight of him. A staff member, rubbing his eyes, thought he was seeing things.
"My god, oh no, Alexander has entered Otis's enclosure." He quickly notified his colleague, "Think of something, we can't let them fight."
"What? How did he get over there?" The colleague, coming to check the monitor, was shocked. "What is our little angel Alexander doing? Oh my god, is he carrying a fish?"
Yes, indeed.
People around found it incredible, "Is he trying to befriend Otis?" Such behavior in polar bears was surprising, but not entirely impossible.
"Wait, let's observe Otis's reaction. If he doesn't attack Alexander, this might help stabilize his mood..." A staff member said seriously.
But they also knew it was very dangerous.
If Otis attacked Alexander, the outcome would be disastrous.
As Qiao Qixi got closer to Otis, the staff watching the screen held their breath, very tense.
"Let's wait a bit; maybe we'll see a different result."
Qiao Qixi was also very nervous, though humans couldn't see his tension through the thick fur, which made him look adorably clumsy. They only saw him walk slowly up to Otis and gently place the fish in front of him.
A young polar bear doing this was unbelievable. Did Alexander think Otis was his mother?
It seemed like the only explanation.
Otis, lacking energy, might have been as confused as the humans. Clearly, this was the first time a young polar bear had fed him.
In their genes, only mothers fed their cubs, and during mating season, some male polar bears might share food with females.
Normally, Otis would be very interested in food because, in the wild, he needed to eat constantly to survive.
But here, his mood had sunk, and he had somewhat lost his appetite.
However, the presence of the young bear awakened his survival instinct, for besides the snow, a familiar sight appearedâa fellow polar bear.
From the monitor, the staff saw Otis pick up the fish with his paws and bite into it.
Applause filled the monitoring room as everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Qiao Qixi was happy. The listless polar bear should eat more to recover from his injuries.
A fish was barely enough for an adult polar bear, taking Otis only a minute to swallow the fish brought by Qiao Qixi.
Licking the blood off his paws, Otis's eyes seemed to shine a bit more.
Seeing Otis stir, Qiao Qixi cautiously stepped back.
Hey, what does he want? Qiao Qixi thought.
Then he ran to the collapsed gap, moving nimbly for a bear.
Otis watched the young bear's retreating figure but didn't follow. After a while, he turned and ate all the fish in his food trough.
This change made the staff happy and consider whether to rebuild the collapsed gap.
After much discussion, they thought leaving the gap might be beneficial. Alexander and Otis could become companions, comforting each other.
Thus, Qiao Qixi's plan failed.
He initially wanted to wander over to draw the staff's attention and have them seal the gap.
Instead, the gap grew larger and became a tool for the staff.
Becoming Otis's companionâwere the humans serious?
In the history of polar bears, unrelated adult male polar bears never became companions.
No matter how much Qiao Qixi protested, his and Otis's enclosures remained connected, an unchangeable fact.
After two days in his little room, Qiao Qixi realized his bear neighbor didn't seem to care about him and gradually relaxed.
Worry and curiosity eventually overcame fear, and two days later, Qiao Qixi, fish in mouth, wandered to the gap again, meeting Otis.
When their eyes met, the atmosphere was tense and awkward.
Staring at a polar bear wasn't wise; it could be seen as a challenge, leading to a sudden attack.
Fortunately, Otis didn't charge. He approached the young bear slowly, seemingly friendly.
After several brief encounters, they were familiar with each other's scent.
A young bear like
Qiao Qixi probably didn't concern Otis.
Glancing at the fish Qiao Qixi brought, Otis casually pawed at it, showing no immediate intention to eat.
The morning's ration had just arrived; maybe he was full, Qiao Qixi thought.
As Qiao Qixi turned to leave, he noticed Otis following him, fish in his mouth.
"......" Qiao Qixi's emotions were in turmoil, imagining bloody scenes.
But soon he realized he was overthinking. Otis was just interested in his enclosure.
Unfortunately, it was as cramped as the previous space, incomparable to the vast outside world.
Otis seemed disappointed, but he was no longer as listless, finding a sunny spot to eat the fish.
This was much better than before.
Qiao Qixi couldn't believe his territory had been taken over so blatantly.
That spot was one of his favorite napping places.
Seeing the white figure approach cautiously, Otis just casually licked his mouth.
He clearly didn't consider the young bear a threat.
The staff, watching through the monitors, saw a miracle.
It was incredible.
Otis visited Alexander's enclosure, accepting his presence, while Alexander seemed to treat Otis as a mother, constantly showing goodwill.
This scene made the staff excited, wondering if they should release them together.
It was worth considering.
If Qiao Qixi knew their thoughts, he would faint.
He had said it a hundred times.
Polar bears are solitary animals, especially male polar bears. Even if a comet hit Earth, they wouldn't become companions.
