Across the Hall (G.N.D. Sequel)
Evan's POV:
Thursday
I step out of the shower with a towel wrapped my body and I go into my bedroom to find some clothes.
I jump and nearly scream when a voice starts talking from the door. I'm supposed to be home alone.
I turn quickly and see Lexi standing there, grinning wide.
"Jesus Christ. I should not have told you where the spare is." I groan, hand over my heart.
"Sorry, but this is exciting stuff- read this." She laughs, handing me her phone with an article pulled up on the browser.
I read the headline aloud, "nurse fired over affair with cardiovascular surgeon." My eyes shift up to Lexi's instantly, "no... Katie?"
She nods quickly, grinning from ear-to-ear. "That bitch can't keep her legs closed. I guess that explains how she got the job. She fucked her way there."
I laugh a little and shake my head, hardly believing it. "I wish that was more surprising." I mutter as I browse through the rest of the article, finding out that the doctor she was banging is now under review too. "She always came off as a bit slutty in high school. I'm sure that fiancé of hers is loving this too."
"Karma is a real bitch." Lexi grins, falling back into the bed with her arms behind her head. She is loving this more than she should be.
I drop my towel and slide into some clothes, "how was your day?"
"It was good, actually." Lexi says, looking up at me. "How was yours?"
"On the stressful side, to say the least. Layla, the geometry teacher a few down from us, had me cover her class during planning, so I didn't even get to eat a decent lunch." I groan.
"Wanna make dinner?" Lexi asks.
I laugh, "ha, right. I would be the one making it since someone can't cook, and I am too tired for that." I tease her.
"Okay, fine. I'll order something for us." Lexi shrugs, pulling her phone out.
"Or... you could go get us some McDonald's and we can call it a night." I smile, feeling incredibly lazy and having the strongest craving for McDonald's.
Lexi laughs, "that's an option too. Text me what you want." She says, walking back out the door.
I send her my order and go sit on the couch, just wanting to relax and breathe for a moment.
No more than fifteen minutes into my silent meditation, the doorbell rings.
I furrow my brows and go open it, expecting it to be Lexi. "You don't have to ring-"
I'm surprised- to say the least- to see Elijah standing there instead. He's dressed in slacks and a button up shirt, paired with a nice tie. Clearly he just came from work.
"Oh, Eli." I stutter. "I- I thought you were someone else."
He smiles, "just me. Haven't heard from you in a while, figured I'd come by. I just got off a two hour flight." His voice is already suggesting that he wants more and he hasn't said more than a sentence to me.
I nod and he starts to come inside, and I don't have it in me to stop him. I close the door behind him and when I turn around I catch his eyes walking up and down my figure, causing me an extreme amount of discomfort. It's partially my fault because I never gave the guy a straight answer, or a hard rejection. I just sort of ghosted him, so I can't be mad that he just showed up wanting a fuck.
He steps closer and his hand presses against my waist and he leans down to kiss me, but I tuck my head away and step out of his reach.
"Eli-" my rejection solicits a laugh from him. "I um- I can't."
He gives me a playful grin as if I'm playing hard to get or something. But in reality, I'm not playing anything.
"Is that so?" He grins, stepping into me again.
"Elijah. I'm serious-" my sentence is cut off when he kisses me and I, again, pull away.
"Two number ones and a-" Lexi comes in the door clutching a bag of greasy food and soft drinks. She freezes when she sees the man's hand on my waist and I push him off further. "Oh."
I shake my head and look up at Elijah, "I'm seeing someone." I say, though he's probably already started to put the pieces together on his own now.
His face changes and his body language does too. He pushes his hand over his hair and nods, "I- I'm sorry. I didn't think that uh- okay."
Lexi stays quiet and watches the awkward interaction and I bite my cheek, "let me walk you out."
Eli nods and goes back to the door he entered through, and I escort him to his car.
"I'm sorry, Evan. I had no idea." He apologizes again and I can tell he wants to pry, but is too afraid.
"It's fine, Eli. What we had was fun, but I need more than just something 'fun.'" I shrug. "She gives me that." I explain, giving him two answers in one.
He nods and averts his eyes downward, "I see."
"Have a good night, and good luck with... everything." I force a smile and he nods, closing the door to the car and backing out of the drive.
I return inside and Lexi is shoving fries into her mouth. "Did I interrupt?"
My eyes roll, "yeah, your timing sucks. I was about to let him screw me right there in the living room."
She gives me a look of displeasure. "That's the guy who left the hickies, right? The one you were hooking up with?"
I sigh and take the seat beside her, "Eli. Yeah." No point in lying.
She nods and stays quiet.
"You're not seriously mad, are you?" I groan, not in the mood for bullshit.
She shakes her head, "I don't think I have a reason to be mad, do I?"
I cut my eyes at her, "do you think I'd give you a reason?" I ask, wanting to know if she thinks that I would cheat on her.
She shakes her head after a few seconds and I raise my brows, not believing it. "Seriously, Lexi?"
"What?!"
"You think I'd go fuck him?" I laugh sarcastically, getting quite frustrated.
"I- no. I just don't like it, that's all. Knowing he used to fuck you is enough of a reason for me not to like him being around you. It doesn't mean I don't trust you." Lexi reasons.
"You did this five years ago, you know? When you thought I slept with Scott after I started sleeping with you." I point out, not having forgotten the incident. "Maybe you haven't figured this part out yet, but I'm not the type of girl to go from one fuck to the next. Monogamy means something to me." I snarl, now annoyed with Lexi. I leave the table, taking my food with me.
"Evan-"
"I just want to eat alone." I groan and go to the other room.
Lexi's POV:
After finishing dinner alone, I clean up my mess and decide that now is one of those times where Evan wants and needs her space.
So, I park myself on the couch in the living room and watch some documentary on Netflix about how terrible and cruel the production of food is in the world.
Once it's over, I check the clock and see that it's nearly ten o'clock. I shut off the lights and TV, then I lock the doors and slowly glide down the hallway to the master bedroom.
Evan's bundled up on the bed with her laptop laying on the bed in front of her, hair put up in the messiest way possible, with glasses framing her eyes.
She doesn't speak to me when I enter the room. She just watches me undress and make my way to the bathroom to shower.
When I come out I dress myself in a tee and some boy-short underwear and climb into the king-size bed, minding my distance.
I feel her eyes burning into my back for several seconds before she says anything to me. "Tired?"
"Yeah." I say, keeping it short.
I hear the covers rustle and the laptop close, then I feel her hand run over my shoulder blade and her lips press against my back. "You know I love you, right?"
I nod my head yes and glance over my shoulder at her, "I love you too." The words aren't as chipper as they usually are leaving my lips, but they're no less sincere.
She pulls her glasses off of her face and sets them to the side, along with her laptop. She slides her entire body across the empty space between us and lays her head against me. "I don't care what the hell happens, or who says what- I need you to promise me that you will never go to bed angry with me."
I bite my cheek, and nod my head slowly.
"Please look at me." Evan urges, her hand moving up and down my arm.
I sigh and roll over, finally facing her.
"It won't always been rainbows and butterflies, Lex." Evan reminds me.
"I know." I sigh. "I'm sorry I acted like that."
She shakes her head, "you don't have to apologize for having feelings, Lexi. A little jealously shows that you care as far as I'm concerned. And at the end of the day, I'm in bed with you... no one else."
I crack a tiny smile, "for the record- I really didn't think you'd fuck him."
She giggles and presses her lips against mine softly. "Mmhm. G'night, Lex."
* * *
I wake up when Evan's alarm goes off, not at all happy about it. Thank god it's Friday.
I hadn't really planned on spending the night with Evan last night, but it worked out that way.
I'm sure tonight will be a different story since she has her kids for the weekend. I can only imagine what bullshit Scott has filled their little heads with over the past week. I feel confident that the kids are smart enough to see through it though.
"Can we just call out?" I mutter into the pillow, reaching across the bed and hooking Evan's waist with my arm.
She shuts off the alarm and gives a tired laugh, "if only."
I smirk to myself and use the little strength I have to pull her body against mine. "It's an option."
"We need to get up." She continues, though her body doesn't move.
I really don't want to leave this bed.
"We can pretend we're sick?" I suggest, nuzzling my head into her neck from behind her.
She shakes her head, "or we could be responsible and start getting dressed."
I groan loudly and hug her warm body a bit tighter, "you're no fun."
"One of us has to be responsible, and it clearly isn't you." Evan jokes.
Her body starts to slip away, but I pull her back into me. "Wait..." I whisper and kiss her neck. "What would it take to convince you to stay here for fifteen more minutes?" I question, my lips still on her skin and my hands rubbing all over her torso and thighs.
"You'd have to stop time. I need those fifteen minutes for my hair." Evan laughs.
I frown and kiss her neck a bit more aggressively, "make it ten."
She lets out a sigh that turns into a soft moan, "Lex..."
"Please? I just want to make you feel good." I tease, carefully sliding my hands between her thighs.
Her lips part and no sound comes out. She bites down on her lip and her back arches, pushing herself against me. "Ugh- I can't tell you to stop when you doâ that." Evan whines, flinching in the best possible way under my touch.
I grin, "I'll make it quick, I pinky promise." With this, I disappear under the sheets and get comfortable between her legs, delivering on my promise of being quick and effective.
Evan's left breathing heavier and glowing a bit more, so everyone wins.
From here, she gets up and starts her routine, as do I. We're able to leave on time, and Evan even decided to carpool today- which is unexpected.
"So I have a question." Evan confesses as she drives.
"I may have an answer."
She glances at me, "the sex toys. Yours and Mia's." She starts off.
My eyes instantly roll at the topic. "Oh, this ought to be good."
Evan gives a quiet laugh, "I'm serious! I wanna know... whose idea?"
I shrug, having to think about it. "I guess it was mutual."
"I've slept with you how many times and not once have you even offered up the use of any toys..." she points out.
"Well, I'm not trying to push you. Why fix something that isn't broken?" I shrug. It's the truth.
Evan glances at me several times, thinking. "The strap?"
I let out a breathy laugh, "can we not discuss this?"
Evan stares at me and I feel the pressure.
I sigh hard, "fine. She liked it. That one was her choice."
"And did you enjoy it?" Evan presses for answers.
I shrug, "I'm a giver, Evan. I like whatever you like." I wink, trying to satisfy her curiosity.
"So if I made the gentle suggestion that we try it out...." Evan's voice trails off and my eyes widen.
"You want to?" I ask, needing more direct clarification.
She shrugs, "I don't think trying it would hurt. I mean, don't get me wrong- what you do for me is more than enough, but I think it could be fun." She admits.
"I'll make a stop on the way to your place then." I smirk.
Evan laughs and her eyes return to the road, "good. I'll be looking forward to it."
By this time, we arrive at the school and get out, walking inside together.
We part ways at our doors and Evan flashes me her bright smile, which is damn near the only thing getting me through this day.
* * *
The first half of the day drags. All of my students have a pop quiz over Lord of the Flies, and since most of them didn't bother to read the assigned chapters on their own time, they're not doing so hot.
I don't blame them for not reading the book, I never did when I was in school, but I at least read the summarized version on SparkNotes... It isn't that difficult.
The bell rings and the group of extremely frustrated teens gather their things and leave my class. During my lunch, I take Evan's car and make a slight detour to pick up a thing or two for Evan, she just doesn't know it yet.
I know after school she'll leave immediately and head right to Scott's to pick up the kids, which leaves us with very little alone time.
Evan's POV:
"I just need your focus for another twenty minutes, then you're free for lunch. Please, give me that." I plead with the seniors, who are especially antsy today.
I hear a few groans and growls, but I turn back to the board and continue writing things for them the copy down in their notes.
"So, with this-" as I begin to lecture again, my phone rings on the desk, and for whatever reason- I forgot to silence it this morning.
I go to my desk and forward the call, and the students see the perfect opportunity to taunt me.
"I thought there was a no-phone policy, Ms. J?"
I give a sarcastic laugh, "ha, ha. I sure do hope you've got all this written down." I say, nodding towards the board.
The call I just forwarded was from none other than Lexi, which slightly concerns me because I know she left for lunch, and I worry something may have happened.
My worries are eased when a text comes through, but I'm faced with another problem as I read it. She's perfectly fine, but now I'm not.
"What's your preference? 4, 5, 6...7?"
The text and the photo attached make me blush hard. The numbers she sent- they reference inches, and the topic is the one that was brought up this morning on our ride to work.
I put my phone down instantly, feeling my face heat up and my body naturally.
"As I was saying..." I start again.
"You alright, Ms. J?" A student asks. Damn you, Lexi.
"I'm fine. Back to work." I demand, trying not to draw attention to the fact that I am probably visibly sweating due to Lexi's little ploy. She's going to get it later.
NOTE/QUESTION:
Hi guys, happy Friday! I'm trying to continue with the quick updates for ya. I've seen several messages/comments wondering how many chapters total this story will have, and as of now it looks like there will be thirty or thirty-one (maybe... we'll see. That could change as I edit things). I promise there will be some other interesting events unfolding in the next few chapters though, so stay tuned.
While you wait for the next update, I have a question that I would love to hear some answers to:
Where are you reading from?! (I realize that I am able to see demographics, but I'd like to hear it from you guys in the comments)
Thank you for all the love and for reading my story! I love all of you guys :)
