The Wrong Bride: Chapter 16
The Wrong Bride: Ares and Raven’s Story
I pull up in front of Hannahâs apartment and walk straight in. Whenever something major happens, Hannah always hides away at home instead of facing the consequences of her actions. She looks up from her seat on the sofa, her eyes red.
I sigh as I take in the panda onesie sheâs wearing and the popcorn on the table. Of course sheâs watching The Notebook. Part of me sympathizes with her. The choice she made isnât an easy one, and for her to do this a week before the wedding means sheâs serious. It must have been heartbreaking, knowing she couldnât have both her career and Ares.
âRaven.â She holds her arms up and I bite back a smile as I sit down next to her, giving in to her silent plea for a hug. I wrap my arms around her and rub her back as she rests her head on my shoulder. âIâm sorry,â she tells me. âI know how much time you put into this wedding, but I canât do this. I canât sacrifice my career, and even though I love Ares, Iâm not willing to abide by his familyâs suffocating rules for the rest of my life. I canât live like that, Rave.â
I pull back to look at her, my gaze searching. Dad hasnât told her, has he? âHannah,â I murmur. âYou have to do this. Itâs too late to walk away now. There really is no going back anymore, Han. If you walk away now, thatâs it. Itâs the end of Ares and you. Do you really want that? I know you love him, and he worships the ground you walk on. I know he makes you happy, Han.â
She shakes her head. âI canât, Rave. I really canât. If I marry him, Iâll just end up resenting him for everything Iâll lose in the process.â
âHannah.â My voice is soft yet chastising. âThis isnât just a love marriage, though. Itâs an arranged marriage. Have you thought of what will happen to Mom and Dad? The company and everything we own? Without the Windsorsâ support, we canât survive.â
She wraps her arms around herself, a hint of insecurity in her gaze. âThey wonât harm us. You know they wonât.â
I cross my arms and stare her down. âGrandma Anne came to the house today, Han. She insists that the wedding take place next week⦠with or without you. If you donât do this, theyâll⦠theyâll make me marry him in your stead.â
Hannahâs eyes widen, and she falls silent. âWhat? You canât be serious?â
I nod. âI am. Dad told me that if I donât, Iâll lose my company and all the money he promised to invest in me. Grandma Anne warned him that sheâll pull away all support if this marriage falls through.â
She runs a hand through her hair. âTheyâre just trying to strong-arm me, Raven. They wonât actually make you do that. Besides, Ares wouldnât ever agree to it. Thatâs sick.â
My heart clenches painfully even as I nod. Sick. Twisted. Thatâs probably what he thinks of this entire situation, too. âIâm not sure, Han. I donât think theyâre merely bluffing. Dad seemed worried, and Iâve never seen Grandma Anne look quite so serious.â
Hannah shakes her head. âDonât worry,â she reassures me. âYou wonât be forced to do anything, Rave. They wonât make you. Theyâre merely threatening us and using you to make me change my mind, but I wonât.â
âHannah,â I plead. âCan you truly bear to watch Ares marry someone else? Marry me? I know you love him, Han, so please think about this carefully. If they arenât bluffing, then what? Will you really stand back and become Aresâs sister-in-law? Because thatâs whatâll happen if you see this through. Dad made it quite clear that if youâre not there on your wedding day, Iâll have to walk down the aisle in your stead, or Iâll lose everything Iâve worked for.â
I know Grandma said she wouldnât accept Hannah at all anymore, but Iâm certain she wouldnât object if Hannah changed her mind now. All sheâs ever wanted is for Ares to be happy, and his happiness lies with Hannah. It always has.
Hannah looks away and runs a hand through her hair. âIâm certain, Rave. I canât do this. I wonât sign away my life for anyone â not even Ares.â
I stare at her in disbelief. âEven if it means heâll marry someone else?â
She nods. âIf that is our fate, then so be it.â
I grab her shoulders and shake her. âHannah!â I snap. âBe reasonable, for Godâs sake. Canât you see what youâre doing to me? Youâll get off easy, but what about me? Iâll be stuck having to marry a man who has only ever loved you, and if I refuse, Iâll lose my career. Donât do this to me, Han. Donât do this to Ares.â
She looks into my eyes, her expression a mixture of defiance and disbelief. âIt wonât come to that, Raven. You wonât lose your company. Neither Dad nor Grandma Anne would ever let that happen. She loves you more than sheâs ever loved me, you know? Even if I donât marry Ares, she wonât punish you for it. Donât worry, okay? You wonât get trapped in a loveless marriage, or whatever it is thatâs going through your mind. Forget the fear Dad instilled in you, Rave. Everything is going to be okay. I promise.â
I shake my head. âNo,â I whisper. âEverything wonât be.â I donât know how to make her see reason. If Hannah doesnât change her mind, sheâll be destroying three lives, including her own.
