Behind the Net: Chapter 42
Behind the Net: a grumpy sunshine hockey romance
OUTSIDE THE BUILDING that holds the teamâs marketing office, I check the time on my phone. Thereâs a missed call from my parentsâ house. I have a few minutes, so I call them back.
âHi, sweetie,â my mom answers. âWe just wanted to wish you luck before the big interview!â
My stomach wobbles. She sounds so hopeful and excited.
âHold on a second. Ken,â she says, calling to my dad. âGrab the other phone. Itâs Pippa.â
A moment later, my dad is on the line. âHi, honey. Good luck today. We know youâll do well.â
I force a weak smile, even though they canât see me. âThanks.â
âWeâre so proud of you,â he says, and I picture his wide smile and bright eyes.
âSo proud,â my mom adds. âOnce you get this job, everythingâs going to fall into place. You just watch.â She sounds so certain. âWithin a couple years, you might even be able to afford an apartment outside the city.â
I donât want to live outside the city. I donât even want to think about buying an apartment yet.
âYou should ask about the benefits,â my dad says. âAsk what retirement options they have.â
âOh, and ask about orthodontics.â
âDefinitely ask about orthodontics,â my dad confirms. âNot all health plans cover them.â
I frown. âI already had braces.â
âNot for you,â my mom says, âfor your future children.â
My future children?! I cringe as my mind begins to race. I can barely picture myself at this job in a few years, let alone, like, fifteen. Good lord. This conversation is making things so much worse. Iâm going home for Christmas in a few weeks, and I have a feeling this interview will be the main topic for the entire time Iâm there.
âI have to go,â I tell them. âIâll talk to you guys later.â
âOkay, bye, sweetie! Good luck!â my mom chirps.
âDonât forget to tell them how reliable you are,â my dad says as a goodbye.
I sigh and stare at the door to the building. I donât want to do this, but I donât have another option.
