Chapter 1040
Married at First Sight
âWhen Lily needs help with her stuff, you should help her out too. Fran and I have been good friends for many years now. Although we havenât met each other in about twenty years, weâve never stopped talking to each other.â
Mrs. Lewisâs intention to matchmake Lily and Duncan was exceedingly obvious.
Lilyâs gaze toward Duncan contained no fear either. In her opinion, the scar on Duncanâs face was terrifying, but all he needed was to get some plastic surgery done to remove the scar and recover his good looks.
He was an exceptionally handsome man if you look at the side of his face without the scar.
Who had never done an impulsive thing or two when they were young?
She herself had even gotten a tattoo before.
âMom, Iâm very busy.â Duncan said without inflection. âIf Ms. Harmon requires my help, I can provide it, but I really donât have the time to take her around.
âYouâre bored staying at home every day anyway. You can accompany Ms. Harmon yourself and take her around to help her get familiar with the area,â Duncan said.
He then looked apologetically at Lily and uttered, âI really am very busy, Ms. Harmon.â
âIsnât it a Sunday tomorrow? You still have to go back to the office?â
âZachary invited me to his place tomorrow for a barbeque,â Duncan lied.
âThen you can just take Lily with you. You guys only have something to talk about when people of the same age get together. Iâm old now so thereâs a generation gap between us.â
Duncan said impassively, âWeâre going to Wildridge Manor. Donât you know what Zacharyâs temper is like? Without his agreement, we invitees arenât allowed to bring young women over.â
Mrs. Lewis was speechless.
Zachary already had a wife. Was he still that unreasonable?
Mrs. Lewis seriously suspected her son was using Zachary as a shield.
âMrs. Lewis, itâs fine. Iâll be fine with just your company. Duncan, you can go ahead with your plans,â
Lily said astutely.
She even surreptitiously tugged on Mrs. Lewisâs clothes, hinting to her to stop pressuring Duncan.
âMom, can we eat? Iâm really hungry.â
Duncan changed the topic.
Mrs. Lewis hurriedly instructed the maids to set the table.
Duncan turned and walked toward the dining room.
âLily, thatâs how Duncan is. I hope you wonât take it to heart.â
Lily said, smiling. âNo worries, I donât blame him for it. I came over out of the blue when he already had things planned. It isnât good indeed to make him change his plans for me. By the way, when he said Zachary, did he mean Zachary York? The Wildridge Manor he mentioned is the old York residence.â
Lily was from Bellville, but she did know a little about Wiltspoonâs upper class.
âHe is the eldest son of the York family. Itâs not surprising that many of you donât know his given name.
Zacharyâs married and has a partner already but he still doesnât let his friends bring young women to gatherings at his house.â
Lily asked with gossipy interest, âI heard his wife is an orphan and came from a farming village. How did he end up marrying her?â
âIt was arranged by Old Mrs. York. That Hunt woman is indeed parentless. She does have a sister-they depended on each other for survival. Oh, right. Mrs. Stone is their aunt. They only found each other last year and because of that, Mrs. Stone even held a huge banquet and invited us to celebrate the reunion.â
Mrs. Lewis had the deepest impression of Liberty because Liberty was overweight. When she saw Liberty at the time, she was utterly disgusted in her heart.
She did not have much of an impression of Serenity, but she knew Zachary doted on Serenity the most.
