Chapter 119
Married at First Sight
âHank, you want to go Dutch with my sister when she doesnât have a job. Sheâs at home raising your kid, yet you have the nerve to go halves with her. Whatâs the point of my sister having a husband then?
âYou always say that my sister doesnât do anything at home, so she fulfilled your wish and did nothing today. Oh, wait⦠My sister still did half of the work. At least, she bought the ingredients, measured the pasta, and prepared a pot of water for you. All you need to do is cook it yourself.â
Hank opened his mouth and wanted to say something , but Serenity did not give him a chance to speak. She continued , âHank, do you think that your house cleans itself every day? Sonny is still young, so when he plays with his toys, he likes to put them all over the floor and he canât pick up after himself.
âYou donât think that those toys put themselves away, do you? Also, who do you think takes care of your meals every day? Isnât my sister doing your dirty laundry too?
âDidnât my sister make three meals a day for you?
âYou only resent my sister for not having a job and income. If it wasnât for my sister taking such good care of the household, would you be able to concentrate at work?
âThis home is shared by the two of you. My sister is in charge of household matters while youâre the breadwinner of the family. You canât say that my sister doesnât do anything for your family just because she doesnât have a job. In fact, my sister has it harder than you at work. Why donât you and my sister switch roles? You can do laundry, cook, take care of the baby, and clean up the house while my sister goes to work.â
Libertyâs income before marriage was not much lower than Hankâs.
Hank opened his mouth several times after being refuted by Serenity, but he was speechless. After a while, he said sheepishly , âSerenity, I only said one sentence, but you gave me such a long lecture as if Iâve abused your sister. Arenât you busy at the store? If your business isnât good and you donât make much, just close your business and work for someone.
âIsnât Zachary working in a big company ? You can ask him to pull some strings so you can join his company. Itâs better to get a few thousand dollars a month than to sustain a business.â
Serenity said coldly, âYou donât have to worry about my finances. I make enough for my expenses and have some spare change.â
âIâIâm going to cook.â
Hank knew that his sisterâinâlaw was angry and did not continue talking. He turned around and went back to the kitchen.
Serenity took a few deep breaths. Liberty was not ready to get a divorce yet, so Serenity had to put up with Hank. Serenity would go all out on Hank if he dared complain about her sister again when Liberty gets a job and prepares for the divorce.
She entered Libertyâs room and saw her sitting on the edge of the bed, gently touching Sonny. She knew that Liberty was only putting up with this because of her child. Hearing the door opening, Liberty turned her head and saw that it was Serenity. She got up, walked towards Serenity, and said softly, âSerenity, your brotherâinâlaw wonât listen to what you say. Donât worry about me. Iâll protect myself until I give up on him. âArenât you going to buy a gift for Zachary ? You should get going then. Donât worry about me. Iâm fine.â
âThen Iâll go shopping now. Call me if you need anything. Tell me if he dares hit you. I will never allow anyone to hit my sister!â
Liberty nodded. She endured so much before because she loved Hank At this moment, Liberty only felt disappointment toward Hank. She was only getting by for the time being for Sonnyâs sake because she was not capable enough to gain custody. Hank would not be able to threaten her ii she got back on her feet.
Serenity left under Libertyâs urging.
When Serenity left, Hank had just finished cooking a dish and brought it out from the kitchen. Seeing that Serenity was about to leave, he asked perfunctorily, âSerenity, have you eaten?â
âYeah.â Serenity casually responded and left.
Hank did not cook all the dishes that Liberty prepared and only made one dish. He forked a piece of his vegetable , put it into his mouth, tasted it, and spat it out immediately.
