Chapter 1669
Married at First Sight
Liberty thanked Zachary Zachary said, âWeâre family, Liberty. You donât have to be so courteous.â
He even feared that she would not accept his help.
Luckily, she was rushing to move places and took up his offer.
With her brotherâinâlawâs assistance, Liberty moved out of her apartment quickly while Zachary left work to accompany Duncan for drinks.
Aside from Zachary and Serenity, no one knew Libertyâs new address. She did not inform Aunt Audrey either.
Meanwhile, in a hotelâs private room, a table was filled with dishes Duncan ordered along with many bottles of strong liquor.
At that moment, Zachary and Josh were by his side, watching him down one glass of alcohol after another.
âEat something, Duncan.â
Zachary took some salad for him. Maybe he felt guilty toward his best friend because he had taken his sisterâinâlawâs side.
He wished he could help Duncan, but his sisterâinâlaw did not love Duncan at all. Moreover, Mrs.
Lewis was stubborn in opposing the relationship.
Zachary had no choice but to respect Libertyâs choice.
âHave some soup too, Duncan. You kept drinking since you came Youâll get drunk easily on an empty stomach. Donât drink too much as well. Zachary and I will have to take responsibility if you get alcohol poisoning.â
Josh scooped a bowl of soup for Duncan as he persuaded him to drink less.
âI feel annoyed.â
Duncan took a fork and ate the salad in his bowl. It was the salad Zachary served him.
After two bites of it, he downed another glass of alcohol. It was strong, yet he downed it like it was plain water.
When he lowered his glass and was about to refill it, Zachary stopped him.
âStop drinking, Duncan. Youâve drunk many glasses. It may feel like nothing now, but the aftereffects of it are strong. Youâll get drunk soon.â
âI envy you, Zachary.â
Duncan patted Zacharyâs shoulder. âIâm really envious of you and Josh. You guys are living better than meâ
After a moment of silence, Zachary said to him, âDuncan, my sisterâinâlaw doesnât wish to have a relationship with you. She doesnât have the intention of getting married again now. Just give up. If you continue, youâll be the one getting hurt.â
Josh advised Duncan, âThatâs right. From what I see, Liberty truly doesnât have the thought of getting married again. Your wooing makes her feel troubled, and Mrs. Lewis opposes the relationship. Even your family, the most important people to you, isnât supportive of this. You should give up.â
Duncan glanced at Zachary and Josh. He said, âHow long have I been wooing Liberty? If it has been eight to ten years and Liberty still hasnât accepted me, itâs understandable that you guys are talking me out of it.
âBut you two are asking me to give up when Iâve just started. Yes, I know itâll be a tough journey. but Iâll continue no matter how hard it is. My mom will compromise sooner or later. As for Liberty, I believe that perseverance brings success. Sheâll accept me one day.â
Zachary watched Duncan. He felt guilty.
Duncan talked to his friends for a long time. After he got drunk, Josh sent him home while Zachary attended an event.
After the event, Zachary returned home and lay on the bed with his wife in his arms. He did not say anything for a long time.
âWhatâs wrong?â Serenity asked out of concern.
âHas Liberty settled down in the new place?â
âSheâs all settled with the help of the people you sent over.â
Zachary buried his face in the side of Serenityâs neck. He rasped, âSeren, I feel guilty toward Duncan. I think heâll find me and ask me about it tomorrow. How do you think I should reply?â
âIsnât Mr. Lewis drunk? If he is, heâll have a headache when he wakes up tomorrow. He probably wonât look for my sister.â
Serenity hugged her husband. She knew he was in a difficult spot.
âHeâll find me sooner or later. Ah, I donât know when itâll end between them. Be it good or bad, we wonât have to be in a dilemma if everything ends.â
