Chapter 1: Sleeping with the Enemy.
The Criminal and The Vigilante (boyxboy) Bk 3
Chapter  1
~Lucasâ POV~
Some referred to me as a vigilante, a man who took the law into his own hands without the least bit of respect for authority. Others called me a criminal; no better than the men I sought to take down.
My enemies thought me a nuisance and me? I  just saw myself as a man who wanted to do some good in the world, to wipe the streets clean of all the bastards who didnât belong there, yet here I was crawling out of bed after a wild night  of sex with the enemy; Reputed arms dealer, alleged hit man and drug lord Adrian Corsetti.
I guess you could add hypocritical to the list of strikes against me, after all, here I was turning a blind eye to my loverâs crimes while day after day I turned men in to the police for much more simple things than Adrian had done.
If I said it wasnât something that bothered me constantly then I would be lying but I guess it was as they say; the heart wants what the heart wants and when it came to my own heart I was weak.
I slipped out of  his bed as quietly as I could and proceeded to pull on my discarded clothes. Along with all my other âheroicâ duties I was the owner of a martial arts dojo and once again I was late for training. Copious amounts of sex could do that to a person: cause him to shirk his responsibilities and let down the people who depended on him.
I had just pulled on my jeans and was about to buckle up when he spoke and I froze.
âWhat are you doing?â he questioned from the bed, his voice sounding hoarse with sleep and I looked over at him.
âIâm late.â I told him simply and looked around for my phone. I knew I brought it in here last night.
âLooking for this?â he asked, holding up my cell and dangling it above his head, a teasing smile playing about his lips.
Shit I knew that look.
âAdrian, Iâm late, hand it over.â I said, making my voice firm as I held my hand out to him.
âGive me a kiss first. Just one kiss and Iâll give it to you.â He responded with a sly grin and my eyes narrowed. We both knew it wouldnât end at one kiss so rather than take the bait I shrugged and grabbed my wallet from the bedside table.
âI think I can manage without my phone for one day.â I said and turned to go but to my surprise just before I turned the handle of the door that would take me into the hallway, I felt a pair of strong hands wrap around my waist and pull me back to bed.
In no time he was hovering over me, his legs straddling mine as he looked down at me with a grin.
âStay with me today.â He said and I shook my head, struggling to get up, but his hands on my arms held me down and I gave up, there was no point in fighting against him, his strength far outweighed mine. He was a class four shape shifter after all.
Adrian you know I canât, unlike you I have to work to pay the bills, now let me up.â I said, giving him a gentle shove.
âLet that David kid take over for you. I want you to myself today.â He said, his voice growing soft as he lowered his head and placed a whisper of a kiss on my cheek.
âThatâs what you said yesterday.â I told him with a chuckle and he placed another kiss on my lips, silencing me momentarily.
âThatâs because I love having you with me.â He said a moment later and my heart warmed at his words.
I always marveled at the way he could go from a badass, stern-faced tyrant his staff had to deal with on a daily basis to this playful, gentle fellow smiling down at me now. I think thatâs what drew me to him in the first place; he had a heart, and while it only showed itself to me and his brothers, it was there none the less.
âI guess maybe I could take today off as well.â I surrendered and without another word his lips descended on mine and we found ourselves continuing where we left off the night before.
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦..
âNo tell him the deadlineâs moved up. I want it here by six tomorrow evening.â Adrian said to whoever was on the other line.
We were both seated in his study, caught up in our own work after spending a more than eventful morning in bed and now he was back in work mode as was I. My friend at the agency had dropped me another file yesterday morning and I was just getting around to it.
The latest victim was a nineteen year old woman; raped and murdered after a guy broke into her apartment one night. So far the police didnât have enough evidence to hold the suspect but the detectives, set on his trail by the grieving family had reason to believe the guy was guilty.
They wanted me to track the guy down and get him to confess. The only reason they had brought me in however was because the ways Iâd use to get a confession out of him was probably not the most orthodox but it got the job done.
âI donât give a fuck what Harris can or canât do, I want it by six or thereâs going to be hell to pay.â Adrian was saying to the person on the line and I looked away from my own work to watch him.
Surprisingly his expression wasnât one of anger, instead, his face was completely devoid of emotion as he spoke; low and deadly into the phone, probably scaring the life out of the person on the other end. Yeah killers had that effect on people.
As soon as he hung up the phone, another call came through and he picked it up without batting an eye.
âCorsetti.â He answered and after a brief pause; âSend him in.â he said then he hung up the phone.
He sent a brief smile my way when he caught me looking but when the huge double doors swung open his expression was schooled once more. I shifted in my seat watching two massive guards walk in, dragging an equally large but haggard looking man between them.
The man was cursing the guards in what could only be another language and I knew he was pissed by his tone.
When they reached Adrianâs desk the men let him go and both took a step back. Adrian was silent for a while as he appraised him then I watched as he reached into a compartment under his desk and extracted a gun.
I froze, the tension rising up in me like smoke to the air. This would be the part of Adrianâs work that troubled me, usually I could only guess at the things he had done but this was the first time I was seeing him in action.
âYou actually betrayed me and thought you could get away with it?â Adrian asked the man calmly. By now the guy was silent as he watched the gun in Adrianâs hand but when he raised it and pointed it to the guyâs chest he found his voice.
âWait, please, maybe we can work something out, please.â The guy pleaded in English but Adrianâs face was set. I knew the moment his hand tightened on the weapon that he was seriously about to shoot a guy right there on his floor without a care in the world.
âAre you insane? You canât just shoot him!â I shouted and everyone in the room turned to look at me.
âLucas, trust me, you donât want to interfere with my work right now.â He said, his tone brooking no argument but I was not about to nod and say yes master, that wasnât the type of person I was.
âDonât give me that bullshit Corsetti, I canât just allow you to shoot someone in cold blood. Weâll take him to the authorities if heâs done something wrong, thatâs how itâs done.â I told him seriously.
I may have been many things in the past but I was reformed, there was a right way and a wrong way to go about everything and I was not about to watch a man be killed over a simple matter like betrayal.
Adrian looked at the guards and signaled for them to leave. âIâll deal with him later.â He told them and when they had gone, the doors closed firmly behind them, he placed the gun on the polished mahogany desk and walked over to where I sat.
âIâm sure youâre aware of the kind of organization that I run here Lucas. I answer to no one and I deal out punishment as I see fit-â he started but I cut him off.
âStop talking to me as if Iâm one of your damn goons. Iâm telling you that I wonât stand by and watch you kill a man, I couldnât care less who you are, what organization you run or who was stupid enough to piss you off.â I told him firmly and to my surprise his face lit with a smile.
âIâve always admired that about you.â He said and when my brows furrowed in confusion he continued, âthe fact that you donât mind standing up to me, not many people are brave enough to do that you know.â He said softly and I cleared my throat before answering, I thought heâd be angry at my outburst I certainly hadnât expected this.
âYeah well Iâm not most people.â I answered and his smile brightened. He reached over to cup my cheek, his eyes going gentle as he looked down at me.
âAnd thatâs one of the reasons I lo-â he started but whatever he was about to say was drowned out by the blaring of my cell phone which was resting on the table beside us.
We both looked down at the screen and when he saw who it was his hand dropped from my face and his mouth tightened as he moved away from me and crossed the room to sit around his desk once more.
I picked up the phone and stared at the screen for a second. His behavior didnât surprise me in the least. It was no secret that he hated when I got calls from Laken; the love of my life up until just less than a year ago when he broke my heart. Adrian had the idea that I still had feelings for Laken and it didnât help the situation when every time he turned around I was either texting or calling him and vice versa.
âIâll take the call outside.â I told him but Adrian didnât even look at me, instead he turned to his computer screen and began typing away. Back to business as usual. I sighed and pushed through his double doors then pushed the button to receive the call.
âHey Laken whatâs up...?â
