Knot Your Damn Omega: Chapter 40
Knot Your Damn Omega (Slate City Omegaverse)
The producer Eva had brought with her smiled at us. âI think thatâs a wrap. Thanks, guys. This is going to be really good.â
âThank you.â Luke extended a hand, and the guy shook it. âWhatâs next in the process?â
âWe cut it together and make something like a mini-episode. We donât have the tattooing parts of it, obviously, but the banter will be enough. Weâll write a pitch too, and Evaâs helping with the placement.â
âYou bet I am.â The woman of the hour breezed in and kissed the man on both cheeks. âThank you, Lamar. Brianâs going to call you.â
âSounds good.â
The small crew started to break down the equipment, and Eva turned to us. âSorry I was MIA for most of it. Brian, my agent, called to talk about this. I hadnât told him and he was a bit blindsided by the idea that I want to get tattooed on television.â
âSo howâd it go?â Kade asked.
âNot great at first. But the amazing thing about Brian is heâs always willing to listen. Trust me, not all agents are like that. So I explained my reasoning to him, and he agreed it makes sense. Heâs not totally sold on the idea of the tattoo yet, but heâs willing to hear it out, and regardless of my whatâs on my skin, heâs going to see what he can do for you guys.â
Ben shook his head. âThatâs incredible, Eva. Thank you.â
She grinned. âI might have told him youâre my sisterâs pack. It helped.â
âI hope weâre her pack.â I said it automatically. The rest of the guys looked at me like they wanted me to shut the hell up, but it was the thing in the back of my mind every second of every day.
âI wouldnât worry about that too much,â Eva said.
âReally?â
She put a finger to her lips and shook her head. âAnything else, take up with May-may.â
The crew was fast, and since there wasnât much equipment, everything was nearly back to normal in twenty minutes, and Evaâs manager left with them. Weâd canceled all our appointments and gave Daisy the day off. Probably for the best, given the way weâd razzed her in the interview.
Daisy kept the place running, and none of us harbored any illusion she wouldnât grab us by the balls and set us straight if we crossed her. We kept her around for way more than keeping the place running. An honorary member of pack Nautilus even if she already had her own.
âDo you guys need anything else from me?â Eva asked.
âI donât think so,â Avery smiled. âYouâve done more than enough. Weâll walk you out back. Weâre ready to go too.â
âPerfect.â Her smile was just like Esmeâs, and yet it was entirely different. Esmeâs smile made my heart flip in my chest and gave me the desire to drop to my knees. Evaâs was pretty, and I appreciated it. But nothing more.
Luke was the first one out the back door, and he froze. âWes, what are you doing here?â
The bodyguard looked up from his phone where he was relaxing under an umbrella in the sputtering rain. He was next to Evaâs car, where her security was waiting. âIâm waiting for Esme.â Then he scanned our group. âSheâs not with you?â
âNo,â I said. âWe never saw her. She was here?â
âI dropped her off more than an hour ago. Things didnât seem to go well at her momâs, and she said to come straight here.â
Eva was already retreating into the studio, and we followed. Wes, too.
âJasmine, was Esme at the studio?â She looked up at us, relief clear in her eyes. âShe was?â Pulling the phone from her ear, she flipped it to speaker. âSorry, Jasmine, say that again. Youâre on speaker.â
âEsme came in, and she was with me for a few minutes. I let her listen through the monitor, and then she suddenly said she had to be somewhere and left.â
âDid she seem okay?â
Jasmine made a non-committal sound. âIt happened so quickly I didnât get a good read on her, but no, I wouldnât say she was happy when she left.â
âThanks. If you think of anything else, call me.â She ended the call and looked at Wes. âWhat happened at Momâs?â
He shook his head. âI donât know. I wasnât inside. Esme was barely inside ten minutes, and when she came out, she was crying.â
I noticed heâd switched to calling her by her first name. He never had before, but the switch told me everything I needed to know. Wes cared about Esme as more than a bodyguard. Their whole team did. They were long-standing employees, and they were treated well. It was more than just security.
Panic clawed at my throat, and I tried to push it down. âMaybe she went home,â I said. âIf something upset her, and she didnât wait, maybe she went back to the house. Or her studio.â The words came out of my mouth, but they rang false. Something was wrong, and I didnât know what.
Ben had his phone out. âShe hasnât unlocked the door at home,â he said quietly. âI obviously donât know about her house.â
âNo,â Eva said. âIf she wants to avoid people, she wouldnât go to the first two places people would look. But Wes, call Neil and send someone to Esmeâs studio to check. Now.â
âOn it.â He stepped away with his phone to his ear.
I wanted to sprint out the door and start looking. Calling her name to make sure she was okay, and I couldnât do that. She wasnât anywhere close by now, and all it would do was alert the fucking photographers something was wrong.
Anger sizzled through my veins until I was rigid with it. I wanted to hurl something across the room or punch the wall. Everything about those people outside made me seethe. Hadnât they done enough? Now they were keeping me fromâ
âWhat happened?â Eva snapped. She was on the phone again, and this time I had a feeling I knew who it was.
âNo, you donât get to do that. Youâre going to be quiet and answer my questions one at a time and then maybe Iâll let you talk, Mom. Now what happened?â
She listened for a second and her eyes went wide. âAre you out of your fucking mind? Why on earth would you do that?â I wasnât the only one shaking with rage now. âYeah, spare me the excuses. Esme is missing, and itâs at least partially your fault. Is it so hard to accept weâre not like you? And yes, I said we.â
Another impossibly long silence as she listened.
âWell, Mom, I guess youâre going to have to live with your actions just like the rest of us. Now Iâm going to try to find my sister and undo the damage you did. Iâll call you when I know something.â
She closed her eyes when she ended the call, taking a slow, even breath. âMy mother set up a pack interview today. Esme had no idea and walked straight into it.â
All of us stared at her before it clicked. âNo wonder she was upset,â I said.
âYes,â Luke said. âBut that doesnât explain why sheâs not here.â
âEsme isnât at her house,â Wes said. âBut I tracked her phone. Itâs moving. Not far from here.â
âLetâs go,â Kade said.
Ben held out a hand. âHold on. You said itâs moving?â
âYeah.â
âOkay, letâs give it a second and see if it stops because I want to think about this. Wes, Eva, excuse us for a second.â Ben led the way into the main studio, and I was right on his heels. âSorry,â he said. âI know Eva is her sister, but I didnât feel like talking about Esmeâs emotions so casually in front of both of them.â
âNo, itâs a good call,â I said. It was the same reason weâd passed over the question about Esme when we were asked by the producer.
âEsme already knew her mom wasnât a fan of ours. Walking in on that would have been shocking, but I donât think it would make her run,â Luke pointed out. âAnd she came here. Whatever made her leave happened here.â
âMaybe she just needed air,â Kade said. âWe know where she is now. We can ask.â
âYeah.â Avery nodded. âThatâs for the best. Letâs not try to guess.â
I led the way back into the office. âWeâre going to find where she is using the phone. Eva, thank you for your help.â
âOh, Iâm coming with you.â
Wincing, I held out a hand. âI donât think thatâs a great idea. Esme loves you, but if this is about her history with packsâ¦â
Eva cursed under her breath. âYouâre right. Okay, Iâll go home. Please call me as soon as you find her. I need to know sheâs okay.â
âWe will,â Avery promised.
She went out to her waiting car, and I watched the car pull out through the alley.
âThe car is getting closer,â Wes said. âItâs just around the corner.â
Kade was already moving. âLetâs go. Which corner?â
âNorth.â
There were still photographers outside, but fuck them. I didnât care anymore. It was raining harder now, the drops cold in spite of the warm weather.
âIt stopped,â Wes called. âRight there on the corner.â
Looking ahead, there was a cab. Parked on the corner. A man was getting out, umbrella and briefcase in hand. No sign of Esme. âItâs the cab?â
âIt should be.â
Shit. Shit, she wasnât in it. Which meant her phone could be. But there was no way we were going to make it down the entire city block before it pulled away, and with the increasing rain, I couldnât see the cabâs number.
âDid she ditch the phone?â Ben asked. âDo we think sheâd do that?â
Kade growled. âWhy would she?â
âI donât know,â Ben exploded. âAll I know is something is wrong and Iâm panicking. Nothing about this feels right. You donât sense it?â
âYouâre fucking right it doesnât.â Kadeâs voice was just as angry, and he stepped into Benâs space. âYou want to tell me how to feel right now?â
âStop it, both of you,â Luke said. âYes, something is wrong. Last night I told Esme I loved her. She told me she had a hard time saying things, but it didnât mean she didnât feel them. So yes, something is fucking wrong.â
âHello?â Wes answered his phone. I was the closest, and he handed it straight to me.
âEsme?â
âNo, itâs Eva. Jasmine remembered something else.â
My heart stuttered in my chest. âTell me.â
âWhen she came in, and Jasmine let her listen, it was right after you guys were asked about her. Jasmine said she told Esme youâd just been asked about her, and thatâs when she gave her the earpiece.â
âBut we didnâtâoh my god.â
âWhat?â Eva asked, voice desperate. âWhat did you say?â
âIâll call you back.â I hung up and handed Wes his phone. Right after weâd declined to answer the question about Esme, the producer asked us about Daisy. The whole discussion of Esme took maybe ten seconds. And she would have heard us⦠fuck.
âWes, where would she go?â I begged. âIf she needed to not be with anyone at all, where would she hide?â
âLet me think about it for a second.â
The guys were staring at me, and I was glad it was pouring now so they couldnât see the frustrated tears I couldnât hold back.
âThat was Eva,â I told them. âI know why she ran.â
