Chapter 39
You Promised to Divorce Me
Chapter 39
I got goosebumps at the eerily omniscient answer. He was a man of extraordinary character, yes, but this was a lot more than expected.
Also, there was something odd about his appearance right now, like he was slightly out of focus.
Was this marriage going to be okay? When I first proposed, Lennox had looked at me like I was crazy. Compared to that time, the situation and atmosphere were so different, and it was even more difficult to adapt when he embarrassed me like so.
âOlivia, what shall we do?â His eyes glimmered dangerously.
Feeling like a sheep led to slaughter, I answered cautiously, âJust let it slide, Lennox.â I didnât want to sacrifice the innocent craftsmen in our petty squabble.
âEven though you suffered so much?â
âBut my dress will be pretty.â
âIf you say so.â Lennoxâs eyes instantly softened, a satisfied smile gracing his face.
I shook my head with a sigh. He was far too stubborn for me to handle.
As he had already gotten what he wanted, he began to walk again with me still in his arms.
âWhere are we going now?â
âTo the dining hall. I told the staff to get ready so that youâll be able to eat right away.â
I looked at him, mildly surprised.
âArenât you hungry?â
âYes, but Iâm just wondering how you found out.â
âIâm not such a fool that I wouldnât know if my wife hasnât eaten yet.â
âThatâs the best thing youâve said all day.â
It was awkward at first, but being in Lennoxâs arms was unexpectedly comfortable. He effortlessly carried me down the stairs. My tired body naturally leaned against him, my head touching a solid chest.
I jolted.
Lennox laughed. âWhy? You looked quite comfortable.â
âIâm not,â I snapped back, prompting another laugh from him.
Fortunately, we arrived at the dining hall just in time. The slight tension between us dissipated when I sated my hunger.
âI might have eaten those dresses if you hadnât come in time,â I joked.
âIf I had known it was that bad, I would have hurried more.â
âThe food is delicious, so Iâll forgive your tardiness this time.â
âHow gracious. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity.â
I burst into laughter.
Lennox looked at me with a serious expression.
âWhy are you staring at me like that?â
âBecause you look good,â he answered immediately. âItâs nice seeing you laugh.â
My heart pitter-pattered in my chest, excited about the compliment even though my mind knew it was a joke. âStop teasing.â
âBut Iâm not.â Lennox put both of his arms on the table, leaning closer. âDo I look like Iâm teasing you?â
He really had a talent for asking hard questions.
âA smiling face is better than a crying one, isnât it?â
âPerhaps.â I knew I would lose if I responded seriously.
âAre you going to avoid me like this?â
I turned my head away as if I hadnât heard anything, but I could still feel his gaze on me. âWhy are you still looking at me?â
Before he could answer, I heard a familiar voice.
[Olivia!] Ash shot like an arrow through the open window, not even bothering to speak into my mind directly. [Olivia! Sheâs gone!]
Even though Lennox was hereâ¦
[Carinne! Sheâs nowhere to be found!]
I blinked. Blinked again. âWhat do you mean?â
[Exactly what I said. Thereâs no trace of her left, itâs like she evaporated. The man named Richard is gone too.]
âBut there must have been people inside the mansion.â
[They were all put to sleep. Even Viscount Brienne.]
âAll of them?â
[I donât know how the spell spread throughout the entire area, but it would only have taken two whiffs of it to put an ordinary person to sleep.]
I gulped. âBut theyâre safe, right?â
[They wonât die. But no one knows where Carinne is.]
My hands clenched under the table.
Also, Ash had mentioned Carinneâs name twice already, which meant that he wasnât restricted from saying it like I was⦠and that Lennox heard it.
âYou mean Carinne Brienne?â
Ash and I made eye contact. I rubbed my forehead, which was starting to throb.
Oh, right!
Had the restrictions been lifted? I clearly remembered how powerful they were, even though Lennox couldnât see signs of a spell.
âSo, have you two decided on whoâs going to answer me?â
[Gah!] Ash screeched. [Donât do that!]
âThe bird is as timid as it looks.â
[Who are you calling timid?]
âAre there any other birds besides you here?â Lennox grinned.
Ash pouted.
âEven if you want to sulk in silence, you have to finish the conversation properly.â
[I wasnât talking to you,] the bird replied, balking when bright red eyes met his.
âDo you know what makes people angry?â
[I donât knowâ¦!] he made a last-ditch attempt at defiance, but soon lowered his tail.
Lennox put his fingers on the top of Ashâs head, then winked at me. âHeâs so cute that I couldnât help it.â
Couldnât help what? Look at Ash like a snake did a mouse?
At any rate, it seemed like enough bullying for the day. Lennox stepped back and nodded. âExplain.â
[You think Iâm going to reveal information to you?]
âDo you want me to pet you one more time?â
âLennox.â
âOh, so will you tell me?â
I stiffened.
[Olivia, Iâll do it.]
âWait a minute.â I tried mumbling Carinneâs name. It no longer felt like it was stuck in my throat like the last time. âYes, he was referring to Carinne Brienne.â
The words flowed freely.
âDid you send the bird to observe your sister?â
âThatâs right.â
âThere must have been a good reason for your actions.â
I nodded slowly.
âAh, Iâd been wondering who the sorcerer was.â His expression became unreadable, and a cool air current began to swirl around him.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
