Chapter 56
You Promised to Divorce Me
Chapter 56
âAt a store I coincidentally entered while sightseeingâ¦?â
[Coincidentally? I see.] Ash straightened. [You must have really liked it for you to wear it alongside your wedding ring.]
âYes, I do love it.â I smiled, rubbing the bridge of my nose. âThere were a lot of other, fancier rings, but I was attracted to this one. Itâs weird, isnât it?â
Having seen the reactions of Lennox and the shopkeeper, I was expecting the birdâs reaction to be around the same.
But he answered seriously, [No, itâs not weird at all.]
I blinked. âYou really think so? I thought I would hear scolding from you as well.â
[Everyone has different tastes. This ring has found a good owner.] Ash nodded vigorously, even a bit happily. [Donât lose it.] He flew up after speaking.
âAre you going now?â
[For the sake of the newlyweds, uninvited guests should leave quickly.] He winked. [Have a good night, Olivia!]
Late that night, Ashuna stood in front of the duchessâ bedroom.
Their master had already gone into it. Because of the barriers heâd set, not a single sound leaked out, but it was obvious what was going on beyond the doors.
âJust do it in moderation.â
Or else their lady wouldnât be able to get any sleep.
Ashuna, grumbling to herself, felt a cool breeze from the end of the hallway. She raised her head and glimpsed the figure of a walking man.
âDo you want me to relieve your shift?â
She snorted at Nishirâs suggestion. âNever mind. I just got here too.â
Of course, for the âshadowsâ, standing guard in the middle of the night was easy.
âWhat really brings you here?â
âLet me talk to you for a moment.â
Normally, she would have responded with âShoo, donât talk nonsense,â but he looked serious. Ashuna looked back at the tightly closed bedroom door, then at Nishir.
âWait a second.â
The two moved to the center of the corridor, a position where they could still see the door clearly.
Ashuna spoke first, âI suppose I really am busy these days.â
âDonât make that face,â Nishir said, rejecting her sympathy.
She smiled. âDidnât you know? Everyone is betting on when Iâll die of overwork.â
âI wouldnât have known that.â
âIâd have thought that you would put the most money on the line about what will happen to me in the near future,â she shot back.
ââ¦â
âWas it a hundred gold?â
ââ¦Who said that?â Nishir shut his mouth.
âSomeone must have been confident this time, considering that they bet five monthsâ worth of salary at once. Did they want to get rid of me that much?â
ââ¦Youâve been listening in the wrong places.â
âI have to know whoâs praying for my eternal rest. Still, Iâm going to wake up anyway, so thereâs nothing to worry about.â
Nishir changed the subject. âAnyway, did you change your hairstyle?â
ââ¦Did you eat something bad today?â
âIâm genuinely curious!â
âTwo can play at that game. Your hair seems longer now, huh?â Ashuna replied testily.
âAnd the wounds on your hand havenât healed yet.â
âThatâs because itâs been rough these days⦠wait, what?â She frowned, hurriedly grabbing a handful of Nishirâs hair to measure the length. âHey, whatâs this? Why is it getting longer? Iâ¦â
She realized something soon after.
âCould it be that⦠magic is coming back?â
âYes.â
âBecause of the ladyâ¦â
âThatâs right.â
Ashunaâs face hardened. It was not for a long silence that her mouth opened. âSo⦠againâ¦â she trailed off, biting her lower lip in an attempt to keep her emotions at bay.
Tears welled up in her eyes. âFinally, weâ¦â She buried her hands in her face.
Nishir waited for her to compose herself in silence, a small consideration for a colleague.
In the end, he didnât have to wait very long, but she was not known to be flustered by most things. Considering her usual temperament, this much was natural, and her overwhelmed appearance was more of the exception.
âI apologize. I must have looked ugly.â
âNot at all. I had the privilege to witness a rare sight.â
Ashuna glared. âYou know youâre becoming more and more like your master, right?â
âIâll take that as a compliment.â
âDonât.â
Even with her cold answer, Nishir only shrugged off her rebuke and brought up the real reason he came to her. âBut there are some problems.â
âWhat is it?â
His eyes scanned the empty hallway, their battlefield at the moment. There was no sign of life in the vicinity.
Having confirmed that no one could eavesdrop, he opened his mouth, âHis Highness is going to break his promise.â
âWhat promise?â
âThe one he made with his wife.â
Ashunaâs face distorted when she understood what he meant. âWhat about the contract?â
âHeâll destroy it no matter what it takes. Heâs that type of man.â
âButâ¦â She hesitated. âWe have to go back to where we came from someday.â
âTrue,â Nishir answered calmly.
Her eyes widened. âIs he going to take the lady with us?â
He kept silent, which was an answer in itself.
âHe canât. Does he think humans can live there forever?â
How long would that last? Months? Years?
Nishir gulped. âYou know, Madam is not an ordinary human being either.â
âIf youâre going to say that itâll be fine with her powers, get lost,â Ashuna growled. âShe wonât be able to stand it. That place isnât like here.â
ââ¦â
Nishir didnât expect that his colleague cared that much for Her Highness.
âYou could have stopped him!â
âI couldnât! His Highnessâ¦â He ended up confessing the truth, âHe wants to have her entirely.â
Ashunaâs eyes filled with anger. âDid you hear what you just said? How could he think that? Has he gone mad? How dare he treat his wife like that?â
âLower your voice, Ashuna.â
But Nishir never could placate her when he went into such moods. She never gave up on her dedication, and it seemed that sheâd given it to their lady. She wouldnât be able to accept the will of their master.
âPeople arenât things to be had!â
Of course, sheâd felt the signs of it before, especially when Lennox asserted monopoly over Olivia. But she didnât expect it to be this badâno, she had only fooled herself. She saw their masterâs eyes filled with more than just desire.
âI donât want to believe it.â
There was only one conclusion to reach.
âNo⦠Itâsâ¦â
âWhat do you mean?â
âThereâs something else.â
Ashuna smirked. âAnd what is it? Is it Madam?â
Well, that was what they wanted to believe. She snorted to herself.
She had no intention of stopping Nishir from currying favor with their master, but that arrogant man needed to be seriously hurt at least once.
âThis will be interesting.â Ashuna laughed darkly.
Nishir asked anxiously, âWhat is it?â
âLook forward to it.â
She was one of Lennoxâs best shadows, but her strongest trait was one that made her a ticking bomb.
âWe will see a rare sight that will never again happen in the future.â
