Chapter 26 - the Scent
Onyx Blood [True North series book 2/3]
I walked into the dining room, where everyone was already sitting at the table, having breakfast. Aricor patted the chair next to him, inviting me to sit down. I avoided Thoridorâs eyes as I took my seat, trying to look casual.
âBy the moons, Serin, what have you been up to?â Aricor said with a horrified look on his face, âyou reek!â
I dropped my jaw in astonishment. âWhat do you mean?!â I whisper-yelled, trying not to sound too offended, âI just took a bath! I used some sort of herbal concoction Phaedra gave me â could that be it?â
Aricor leaned in closer to sniff me, and then whipped his head toward Thoridor, who was silently observing us, his eyebrows dangerously low.
âYou slept with him!â Aricor concluded in shock, keeping his voice low enough so only I could hear.
âI did not!â I hissed, and then composed myself, âI mean, technically, I did. But I didnâtââ
âNo, I know,â Aricor whispered dismissively, âyou wouldnât be here right now if youâd completed the mating process last night.â He trailed his eyes up and down my stature, making Thoridor growl lowly across the table.
Aricor shot him a look. âYou better not let him distract you too much,â he then said to me, âI need you focussed. I have big plans for today.â
âWhat kind of plans?â I asked suspiciously. âWielding, mostly,â Aricor said, âI want to try some new things.â
We finished breakfast, and I was about to get up when Aricor grabbed my arm. âStay,â he commanded, âwait until Warrian has left. Heâd smell Thor on you â best to keep some distance for a while.â
I froze in place. âHeâd know Iâd been with Thoridor?â I asked, mortified. âEvery male in Ardanis would know if theyâd come close enough, Serin,â Aricor said plainly.
âBut I took a bath,â I mumbled defeatedly.
We waited for the others to leave the room, and all I could do was wave apologetically at Warrian as he got up.
âWeâll talk later?â he mouthed at me with a smile. I just nodded excessively.
When everyone but Thoridor, Aricor and I had left, Aricor got up. âI donât know what you two are planning,â Aricor said, âbut I donât think you can keep this up very long. This is asking for trouble. Either complete the bond, or reject it â this makes you two very, very vulnerable.â
âWhy?â I asked, âhow does this make us any more vulnerable than before?â
âBecause everyone will be able to smell Thoridor on you, Serin,â Aricor replied solemnly, âand you two are blood-linked, but not fully mated, which makes you an excellent way to get to Thoridor. Youâre his weak link, now.â
Thoridor walked around the table, and got behind me, wrapping his arm around my waist protectively. I immediately felt more at ease.
âWhat if I get her to the Aerial Palace,â Thoridor asked, âand clear it out?â
I looked up at him in shock. âLock me in a palace in the sky by myself?â I squeaked, âno thank you.â
Aricor shook his head. âThat wonât work for an array of different reasons. Why donât you two just complete the bond? That would fix everything.â
I could feel my heartbeat speed up, and took a few slow breaths to help calm it down. Thoridor squeezed my waist soothingly.
âWeâre not rushing things,â he said, leaving no room for protest. âWeâre doing this at Serinâs pace. This is all new and foreign to her, keep that in mind. Sheâs only just beginning to feel comfortable around me. And sheâs just now beginning to let go of War.â
Aricorâs eyes darted back and forth between Thoridorâs and my faces a few times, and then he sighed.
âFine,â he said, âbut you should be very aware of the danger this brings to the two of you. From now on, you keep your distance from everyone, Serin. Iâll get you some guards to escort you to and from your room when Thoridor or I arenât available to do so ourselves.â
My heart sank. The sheer thought was making me claustrophobic â no chance to wander the halls of the palace by myself, to go to the library in peace, or get some air up on the roof â guards watching my every moveâ¦
âDonât worry, love,â Thoridor spoke into my mind, âIâll figure something out.â
I took a deep breath, and instinctively inched closer to him again. Thoridor put his hand on my shoulder, sliding his fingers onto the bare skin of my neck. It instantly gave me goosebumps.
âPush away his hand,â Aricor said, nodding at Thoridorâs fingers.
âWhat?â I asked, âwhy?â
âDo it,â Aricor coaxed, âpush it off.â I reluctantly raised my hand, but Aricor shook his head.
âNot with your hands,â he clarified, âwield him.â
I frowned and shook my head. âI donât want to do it if itâs not necessary,â I said, âitâll drain my energy and make Thor uncomfortable.â
âItâs good practice,â Aricor pressed, âif someone comes near you, you need to be able to defend yourself.â
âItâs okay,â Thoridor whispered in my ear, âtry it.â
I sighed, and then knocked off his hand so hard it made Thoridor stumble back a few steps. I flinched and ran to him, grabbing his hand in shock.
âIâm sorry!â I yelled, âI didnât mean to do that â I donât know what happened!â
âThat was good!â Aricor said, sounding impressed, âhave you been practicing?â
I locked my fingers around Thoridorâs hand, and studied it for injuries. âI havenât,â I said breathlessly, not looking up, âthat was completely accidental.â
âDo you think you could lift me?â Aricor asked excitedly, dismissing my obvious discomfort.
âAricor!â Thoridor bellowed, âlook at her! She doesnât want to do any more wielding.â
Aricor finally seemed to see me. âIâm sorry, Serin,â he said, and gestured to one of the chairs. âSit down. Have some water.â
I reluctantly walked to the chair, and sat down.
âThis is good,â Aricor said eagerly, as he took the seat next to mine, and grabbed a goblet of water.
âYouâre getting stronger. Maybe getting frisky with Thoridor is good for something after allââ Aricor had barely finished his sentence before a loud splashing sound cut through the room.
I didnât even look at him as I got up. âI figured you could use some help clearing your mind,â I said, and straightened the goblet I had made Aricor empty over his own head back up.
I gently moved his hand toward the table, and made him set down the cup. âI suppose I am getting stronger,â I continued, and walked toward the door. âIâm dismissing training for today. If you need me, Iâll be in the library.â
