Chapter 31 - the Warning
Onyx Blood [True North series book 2/3]
Thoridor froze in place, and stared blankly ahead for a few heartbeats.
âSend Aricor,â he said eventually, âtell him to use whatever and whomever he may need. Nothingâs off limits.â
The voice on the other side of the door paused a moment. âAricor has been out by the border since right after breakfast, when news first broke. Heâs the one who called for you, Sire.â
Thoridor grunted and drug a hand down his face, as he rolled off me and adjusted the bulge in his pants. He grabbed his tunic and tugged it over his head, and sent me a longing look.
âI have to assess the situation,â he said apologetically, âdonât move. Iâll be back before you know it.â
I frowned discontentedly. âCanât I just come with you?â I asked. Thoridor stroked his beard pensively, and then began putting on his chest piece and bracers.
âI need to know whatâs going on first,â he rasped, as he put on his boots, âAricor doesnât call for me unless absolutely necessary. Youâve not been training for long â it might be a bad idea to bring you out into battle. Plus, Iâll be in beast form.â
I recoiled slightly at the thought. âHow long will you be gone?â I asked softly.
âNot long, I reckon,â Thoridor said, grabbing the back of my neck and pressing a rough, passionated kiss to my lips.
âIâll keep you updated through our mind-link,â he promised, and then turned around and left the chamber.
I was left sitting on the bed, contemplating my options. The borders were under attack. An uneasy feeling settled into the pit of my stomach. Aricor had been there, and called for Thor, an apparently, that meant things were bad.
I slid off the bed and strode into the hallway, looking for a familiar face. I found Morai, Warrian and Maista in the throne room. Warrian immediately left the table to come greet me.
âHow are you?â he asked, reaching for my hand. I wanted to grab him, but remembered what Aricor had said. Heâd be able to smell Thor on me. Especially now that I had just been pressed into his bare chest moments before, probably.
I paused an armâs length away, and slowly began scooting back, trying to look casual.
âIâm fine,â I mumbled, âIâve missed you.â
âIâve missed you too,â Warrian replied, and then looked me up and down.
âYouâre not fully mated yet,â he said slowly, meeting my eyes again. âNo,â I confirmed, gauging his reaction, âbut it wonât be long.â
Warrian smiled. âI know,â he nodded, âbest not to wait too long. Itâs going to wear you both down, and make you two very vulnerable. And as the Crown Princeââ
âAbout that,â I cut him off, âthe borders are under attack.â
Morai scoffed behind us. We both turned around to face her. âYou think I donât know whatâs going on in my own Kingdom?â she snarled, âyou thought I needed a human to break me the news?â
I scoffed right back at her. âIf youâre aware of whatâs going on, Sire, then why is your brother the one doing the dirty work?â
Morai rose to her feet. âWho do you think you are, talking to the Princess of Ardanis like that?â she spat.
I crossed my arms over my chest. âI donât think this is worth getting into right now,â I said, âdo you happen to know how bad it is, Sire?â
Morai sighed. âItâs all borders. Weâre surrounded. I donât know how long theyâve been planning it â but theyâve thought it through very extensively. They moved through our first line of defense like it was nothing.â
I felt my hands turn clammy, and nerves began coursing through me like the sparks had moments before. Thoridor was headed there. I wondered if he knew the extent of the threat he was about to face.
âWhat are we doing to defend ourselves?â I asked nervously.
âWe?!â Morai scoffed, âthere is no we, Calenti.â
It was Warrian who spoke next, stepping in front of me defensively. âCut it out, Morai,â he snarled, âSerin is an Ardanian now. And your brotherâs mate, while weâre at it. Sheâll outrank you one day.â
âYour brotherâs mate.â I was touched. Touched, that he stood up for me, even though saying those words must still hurt him a little. I knew they hurt me.
âThat day is not today,â Morai yelled, âright now, sheâs just a weak link. Sheâs weighing him down â a burden. A human burden.â
Warrian took a threatening step closer to her, his usually-kind face now a mask of anger.
âWatch it, Morai,â he whispered.
I wrapped my hands around his forearm and pulled him back. âThanks, War, but sheâs probably right.â
I flung a thought Thorâs way, but it bounced right back, as if it had bounced into a shield. I tried again, to no avail.
âI canât mind-link him,â I said, panicking, âdoes that mean heâsââ
âIf heâd be dead, youâd be too,â Warrian cut me off, âheâs likely just shutting you out.â
âWhy?â I asked, throwing myself against his mental block over and over, âwhy would he shut me out? Itâs bad, isnât it?â
Warrian frowned, and rubbed his chin. âWell, itâs probably not good,â he mumbled pensively.
âIâm going out there,â I decided, âmaybe I can help somehow. Blood wield. Or⦠complete the bond, perhaps. Make him strong.â
Maista, who had been quietly observing everything unfold, threw her head back and laughed. âOh yeah, that sounds like a smart idea. Fuck him on the battlefield, why donât you, set off a several-moons-long sex spree. It might distract the enemy.â
I narrowed my eyes at her. âBlood wield, then. Iâm getting stronger.â
Warrian shook his head. âSorry, Serin, Iâm afraid thereâs nothing you can do, at this point. Although phrased rather unkindly,â âhe shot Maista a lookâ âMaista is right. Youâre just an easy target now. Anyone could identify you as Thorâs mate, especially now that you⦠smell like him so much.â
I shifted uncomfortably. âWell, what can I do, then?â I asked, âthere must be something.â
âJust stay out of trouble,â Morai said, âand stop distracting Warrian. We need to focus.â
I frowned, but couldnât really argue, because I knew she was right. Then, I felt something shift inside me, and moments later, the humming inside my head returned. Thoridor.
âAre you okay?â I immediately yelled down the bond, âwhatâs going on?â
âGo find Morai, love,â Thoridor replied, ignoring me, âtell her itâs worse than we thought. Tell her to close off the lake, and send anyone capable of fighting. Everyone else stays inside until further notice.â
Panic clawed at my heart. âAnd what can I do?!â I yelled back, âI need to do something!â
âTell Morai,â Thoridor repeated, âand by all means, stay put. I need you safe.â
Then he was gone, and his mind was blocked again.
