Chapter 422
The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning
Madelyn briefly explained the situation to Alex.
Alex paused, and her client let out a groan due to pain. She quickly said, âHold on a moment.â Then she turned to Madelyn, â Iâll gather some folks, and weâll go look for him.â
Madelyn replied, âThank you.â
Alex swiftly assembled a few friends who used to hang out with Forrest.
One of the guys said, âItâs been a long time since Forrest last came to see us. Since he left here, we havenât been in touch much. Most of the time, it was him reaching out to us. Weâre not really sure where he usually goes.â
âYeah, even though Forrest used to scavenge for scraps with me, that was a long time ago.â
âScavenging for scraps?â Madelyn had never known Forrestâs life had been that difficult in the past.
She asked, âDid he⦠used to have a tough life?â
The redhead chimed in, âYou bet! He used to work multiple jobs, and he was the one hauling most of the seafood from the sea. Many couldnât keep up with him.â
This was a side of Forrest that Madelyn had never known.
Alex scolded, âWhy are you talking about this? Letâs get moving and start searching.â
Madelyn said, âIâll go with you guys!â

Alex replied firmly, âNo, you better not. Remember what happened last time. This is not a safe place, and youâre not familiar with it. Weâll handle it; once we find him, Iâll send someone to let you know.â
âThank you!â
âDonât mention it. To repay you for that meal last time, itâs the least we can do.â
As they spoke, a boy of about thirteen or fourteen, carrying a cloth bag on his back, rushed over. âAlex, I found out something. Just around three or four oâclock today, a fierce-looking man with a scar across his eye, along with a group of people, barged into Mr. Masseyâs restaurant. Mr. Masseyâs restaurant is closed now. I went to his house, but heâs not there.â
Alex speculated, âHeâs probably not here; he might have gone out to sea.â
As they left, Madelyn thought to herself, âThe man with the scar across his eye⦠and that phone callâ¦â
It wasnât difficult for Madelyn to connect the dots. She had a sinking feeling that Mr. Massey had likely been held captive by the gang.
She closed her eyes and tried to recall anyone who fit the description. Thereâs only one person who fits: Fred Turner. In broad daylight, no one else would dare do such a thing.â
Madelyn had a vivid memory of Fred. He was ruthless, and he handled Zachâs dirty work. Fred was Zachâs most loyal henchman, and everything he did was on Zachâs orders.
âZach⦠it must be Zach again!â Madelynâs heart sank as she realized the horrifying truth. She stood outside Alexâs tattoo parlor in the desolate alley, feeling like she was being watched.
âBut why did Zach take Forrest? What has he done to Forrest?â Madelynâs heart raced. To confirm her suspicions, she removed Zachâs number from her blocked list and called him.
After five seconds, the call connected. Zach remained silent, but she could sense his breathing. She even had the eerie sensation that he was right beside her.
Madelyn started, âDo you know where Forrest is?â
Zachâs voice came with a hint of amusement, âNow youâre using your brain to think. Good, very clever!â
Madelyn thought, âHeâs still mocking me.â She continued, âTell me where Forrest is, orâ¦. Iâll call the police right now!â
âCall the police? Madelyn⦠Do you think calling the police will help?â
âWhat do you want?â
âFind me, and Iâll tell you everything. Hmm?â
Madelynâs heart suddenly leaped. âAre you⦠in this village?â
Madelyn couldnât shake the feeling that everything that had happened so far had been orchestrated by Zach.
