Chapter 488
The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning
In front of the French windows, the sunlight cast its final glow. Madelyn kept her head down, buttoning Ethanâs nightshirt.
âWhen you graduate, letâs announce our engagement,â said Ethan. Ethan watched her closely, and her fingers paused on the buttons for a few seconds. After a while, he heard her reply, âSure.â But the next day, the entire Ventropolis was buzzing with the news:
[Arnold Corporation CEO to Marry the Daughter of the Jent Family]
[Good News on the Horizon: Arnold Corpâs CEO to Announce Engagement with Jent Familyâs Daughter]
[Exclusive Scoop: Congrats, Arnold Corpâs CEO, on Your Upcoming Nuptials]
On the way to school, Ethan held the newspaper she had picked up today. The headlines were hard to ignore. âIâm not ready yet,â Madelyn admitted.
Madelyn was dressed in her school uniform, with her backpack on her lap. Her long hair was tied up with a green ribbon, and a few loose curls framed her face. She looked at Ethan and said, â Iâm not ready for the official announcement. You should have discussed it with me.â
Ethanâs eyes softened with a gentle smile, but there was still a hint of unfamiliarity in her presence. âWe have two more months⦠and theyâll find out sooner or later, wonât they? Donât worry, no one will pressure you. 11 From that day on, Madelyn carried the title of Arnold Corporation CEOâs fiancée.
âAre you⦠unhappy?â he asked. He cupped her face with his hand, his thumb gently caressing her cheek, his eyes filled with possessive determination. Madelyn gave a slight smile. âNo.â
Ethan smiled faintly. âGood.â After they arrived at school, as usual, Ethan leaned in to kiss her, but Madelyn got out of the car absentmindedly.
Ever since Ethan began investigating Zach, Madelyn could feel Ethanâs attitude toward her had become increasingly peculiar. His possessiveness had grown stronger, as if he feared someone would steal her away.
Last night, they slept in the same room. Though Ethan had only held her and done nothing more, she had felt him being unusually tense. In fact, he had gotten up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, and it took him half an hour to return, having even taken a cold shower.
Madelyn wasnât sure if her agreement to the engagement with Ethan was the right decision. Since she had agreed, her heart had been in turmoil. It felt like something bad was looming.
Madelyn got out of the car and saw that familiar car. When she saw Zach, her anxiety heightened.
Jadie took the lunchbox from Zach and looked at Madelyn, then back at Zach. â Zach⦠Madelyn is about to get engaged. Shouldnât we discuss this with the family? Making such a hasty decision, could something happen?â
Zach, with enigmatic eyes, watched Madelyn, who was now quite far away. This has nothing to do with you. Donât overthink it. Focus on what you need to do.â
Jadie continued, âWe grew up together, even though Madelyn never truly considered me a sister. But I canât just stand by and watch her make such a crucial decision about the rest of her life.â
Zach didnât say much, just made a perfunctory response, and then got into his car and left. Leyton asked, âMr. Jardin⦠are you really going to get engaged to Miss Jent?â
Ethan, without looking away from the receding black Audi, never regarded either himself or Zach with any particular reverence in Ventropolis.
âDo I seem like Iâm joking? Contact Hayson in three days to discuss the engagement details.â âBut Miss Jent still has over two months until graduation. Isnât it a bit early?â
âDonât ask what you shouldnât. Just do as I say.â
âYes, sir.â âBy the way, the school called me yesterday, saying that Miss Jent hasnât been attending classes latelyâ¦â
