Chapter 803
The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning
Seeing Mya, the faces of the group twisted in anger, âMya! You did this!â
âWhy are they cuffing us? Shouldnât it be her? What did we do?â
âSeriously. Officer, weâre just regular people. We havenât done a thing. You sure youâve got this right?â
The police officer gave them a stern look, âEnough talking.â
âUgh! All this is because of Mya and her sneaky friend. Just wait, Mya. When Iâm out, youâll get whatâs coming.â
The officer, a tad flustered, held back the still-complaining woman, âIf you want a shorter time behind bars, be quiet. You really shouldnât cross her.â
âWhatâs so special about her anyway? Does she think sheâs richer than us?â
Madelyn sighed, âLetâs get out of here.â
âOkay.â
The noise died down as everyone was packed into the police cars.
âMya, hold on!â
A girl in a sparkly princess dress stopped Madelyn and Mya. Seeing the woman next to Mya, her eyes lit up with admiration. Wiping away her tears, she said, âItâs because of you that my momâs in jail. Iâve just started college. Whatâll happen if they find out about my mom? I was going to move out of your place soon. Why did you let things get so messed up?â
A small boy, about five years old, clutched Myaâs dress, tears streaming down his face, âMy momâs going to be alright, isnât she, Mya?â
Seeing Myaâs distraught face, Madelyn sighed, realizing she had to step up. Protecting Mya, she shot back, âIf your mom hadnât messed up, you wouldnât be here in tears. The police will sort things out, and pestering Mya wonât help. Do you remember learning about the consequences of bad choices? Youâve been freeloading at the Harperâs for too long. How can you even speak like that? No one supported Mya when I was gone. Now that Iâm here, and itâs cleanup time. You had your chance to leave. But when thereâs trouble, all you do is blame. Just because you say somethingâs yours doesnât make it so.
Head on back to where you started.â
Madelyn looked at the girlâs fancy princess dress and fixed the butterfly bow that was coming loose.
âThatâs a cute dress, but it doesnât seem to fit you. Your little brotherâs a gem-way kinder than you.
Watch out for him, and donât get mixed up with the wrong people.â
Holding Myaâs hand, Madelyn began to walk away. When the girl tried to follow, a bodyguard stepped in her way. Madelyn told Mya, âIf you donât want the Harpers to slip back into old ways, look ahead, not behind.â
Mya pursed her lips, âThe two siblings never hurt me. When Luke trapped me in that storage room, leaving me hungry, they helped me out.â
Keeping her pace, Madelyn said, âDonât you hold a grudge against them? Seeing the situation youâre in now, can you still feel grateful? Theyâre the reason for all your troubles.â
Mya had always been overly kind. The sound of her joyful laughter still echoed in Madelynâs memories.
But seeing her now, scarred and without her signature smile, Madelyn felt a deep ache of regret. She delicately pulled back Myaâs sleeve, uncovering a tapestry of new and old injuries. âLook at what youâve been throughâ¦â Madelyn whispered, her voice wavering with emotion. Thoughts of Myaâs hardships in her absence weighed heavily on Madelyn.
Holding onto the belief that Madelyn would return, Mya hoped she would pull the Harper family out of their mess. But Madelyn had been absent for so long.
âShe mustâve felt so alone,â Madelyn pondered.
