Damage Control
Between Hearbeats
Abhishek had always imagined playing for ICT would be tough. The pressure, the expectations, the grueling training sessions.
But nothingâabsolutely nothingâwas as exhausting as dealing with Virat Kohli as his captain-slash-angry-older-brother-in-law-in-the-making.
Because ever since the truth came out, Virat had made it his personal mission to break him.
âAnother lap, Sharma! Youâre looking sluggish.â
âYour footwork is sloppy today. Focus!â
âDo you even know how to hold a bat, or do I need to call my sister to remind you?â
The team, of course, loved every second of it.
âOh man,â Ishan said, barely containing his laughter as Abhi finished his fifth extra lap. âViratâs really making you work for his approval, huh?â
Abhi groaned, wiping sweat from his forehead. âApproval? This man is trying to kill me.â
Shreyas grinned. âYouâre lucky, dude. If you werenât on the team, heâd be plotting your actual murder.â
âYeah, yeah,â Abhishek muttered. âLaugh it up.â
But as much as Viratâs âextra trainingâ was brutal, Abhi refused to complain.
Because if this was what it took to show Virat he was serious about Meera? Heâd do it.
No matter how many laps he had to run.
Meanwhile, Meera was on a mission of her own.
She knew her brother. Virat wasnât just madâhe felt betrayed. She had hidden something big from him, and he wasnât the kind of person who forgave easily.
So one evening, she ambushed him in his home gym.
Virat was lifting weights when she waltzed in and plopped down on the bench beside him.
âNope,â he said immediately. âNot talking about it.â
Meera huffed. âYou donât even know what I was going to say.â
Virat set down the weights and gave her a look. âMeera.â
She sighed. âFine. Itâs about Abhi.â
Virat grabbed a towel and wiped his face. âNot interested.â
Meera crossed her arms. âBhai, come on. Youâve been making his life hell.â
Virat shrugged. âNot my fault he canât handle a little extra training.â
âA little?â Meera scoffed. âYou had him do ten extra sprints yesterday!â
âGood for his stamina.â
âBhai!â
Virat sighed, rubbing his temple. âMeera, you hid this from me for three years. Thatâs not something I can just let go.â
She bit her lip. âI know. And Iâm sorry.â
Virat looked at her. Really looked at her. She meant it.
ââ¦Why didnât you tell me?â he finally asked.
Meera hesitated. âBecause I was scared youâd overreact.â
Virat scoffed. âWell, obviously. But did you really think Iâd⦠what? Lock you in your room and forbid you from seeing him?â
She gave him a pointed look.
Virat groaned. âOkay, fine. Maybe I wouldâve been dramatic at first.â
Meera smirked. âSee?â
He shook his head. âI just⦠Youâre my baby sister, Meera. Iâve spent my whole life protecting you. And then I find outââ He sighed. âIt just hurt that you didnât trust me enough to tell me.â
Meeraâs heart clenched.
She reached over and squeezed his hand. âI do trust you, bhai. I just didnât want to lose both of you.â
Virat was quiet for a moment. Then he sighed. âI still donât like it.â
Meera smiled. âI donât need you to like it. Just⦠donât hate him?â
Virat exhaled. âHeâs a good player. And a decent guy.â
She grinned. âThatâs the closest thing to a compliment Iâm ever going to get from you, huh?â
He rolled his eyes. âDonât push your luck.â
But as she left, Virat couldnât help but smile a little.
Because despite everything, he had to admitâ
If Meera was happy, maybe Abhishek wasnât the worst choice after all.
But after
One Final Test
The next day, Abhishek found himself facing one last challenge.
After practice, Virat tossed him a bat. âOne-on-one. You and me. Right now.â
Abhishek frowned. âWait, what?â
The team immediately crowded around.
âOhhh, this is gonna be good.â
âI bet Viratâs gonna destroy him.â
Meera, watching from the stands, facepalmed. âBhai, really?â
Virat ignored her. âLetâs go, Abhishek. One over. If you can hit one ball past me, Iâll stop making your life miserable.â
Abhishek smirked. âAnd if I donât?â
Virat grinned. âThen you run ten more laps.â
The team cheered.
Abhishek exhaled, gripping his bat. This was it.
Virat bowled his first deliveryâa wicked in-swinger. Abhi barely defended it.
The second ballâa fast bouncer. He ducked.
The thirdâa deceptive slower one. Abhishek mistimed and missed.
The team hooted. âHeâs playing with you, man!â
Abhishek gritted his teeth. Focus.
Fourth ballâfull toss. Abhi swung hard andâ
CRACK.
The ball soared past Virat, bouncing to the boundary.
The entire team exploded.
âNO WAY!â
âHE DID IT!â
Meera jumped up and cheered.
Abhishek smirked, resting his bat on his shoulder. âSo. Guess that means no more extra laps?â
Virat sighed dramatically. âFine.â
The team whooped.
Abhishek grinnedâuntil Virat stepped closer and muttered, âBut if you ever hurt my sister, I will break your bat over your head.â
Abhi gulped. âUnderstood.â
Virat clapped his shoulder. âGood.â
And with that, he walked off, leaving Abhishek both relieved and slightly terrified.
Meera ran up to him, grinning. âThat was amazing!â
Abhi sighed. âI swear, your brotherâs trying to kill me.â
Meera laughed. âWelcome to the family, loverboy.â
Abhishek groaned. âWhy does everyone call me that?â
And as the team erupted into laughter again, Abhi realizedâ
Maybe, just maybeâ¦
This wasnât the worst way to start his career after all.
<â (â ï¿£â ︶â ï¿£â )â â
That night, Meera found Virat sitting alone in the garden, looking up at the sky.
She sat beside him. âYou okay?â
Virat sighed. âYeah. Just⦠still processing.â
Meera smiled. âI know itâs weird. But Abhi really loves me, bhai.â
Virat glanced at her. âYeah. I can see that.â
She grinned. âSo⦠youâre really okay with this?â
He exhaled. âIâll tolerate him.â
Meera beamed. âIâll take it.â
And as she hugged him, Virat sighed dramatically.
âSisters,â he muttered. âMore trouble than theyâre worth.â
But deep down, he knewâ
He wouldnât trade her for anything.
