Abhishek stared at Virat, as if trying to process what had just happened. It was the first time Virat had acknowledged himânot just as a player on his team, but as Meeraâs boyfriend. And coming from the captain himself, it meant something.
Meera, on the other hand, was grinning like she had just witnessed a rare celestial event. "Wow," she said, dramatically placing a hand on her chest. "Did Virat Kohli just give my boyfriend a compliment?"
Virat rolled his eyes. "Donât push your luck."
Abhishek chuckled, shaking his head. "Iâll take what I can get."
The mood around the table had lightened, and for the first time since they had sat down, Virat didnât feel like an outsider looking in. He still wasnât exactly comfortable with seeing his teammate doting on his sister, but he could admit, at least to himself, that Abhishek was a good guy.
Their dinner continued without any further interruptionsâuntil the waiter arrived with the bill.
Meera, ever the independent one, reached for it first. "Iâve got this."
Virat immediately snatched it from her hands. "Nice try."
Abhishek raised an eyebrow. "I should pay, at least for Meera."
Virat narrowed his eyes. "Oh? So, when we go out with the team, should I let you pay for me too? Since, you know, Iâm technically also your responsibility?"
Meera burst out laughing, and Abhishek groaned, rubbing his temples. "Thatâs not what I meant."
"Then donât say dumb things," Virat smirked, sliding his card to the waiter.
Meera was still laughing when Abhishek leaned toward her. "How do you deal with this guy?"
She grinned, nudging Virat playfully. "You get used to it."
Virat simply shook his head, but there was a trace of a smile playing on his lips. He had fought this whole situation for long enough. Maybeâjust maybeâit wasnât as bad as he had made it out to be.
Maybe, for the first time, he could finally say he was okay with it.
