Chapter 9

Date Night & The Spy Games

Between Hearbeats

With Aarav finally out of the picture, Abhishek felt like he could finally breathe.

So when Meera suggested a proper date night—no cricket, no drama, just them—he was more than happy to say yes.

They ended up at a rooftop restaurant, fairy lights strung up above them, the city buzzing in the background. Meera was in a black dress, looking way too good, and Abhishek? He was just trying to keep his cool.

"You’re staring again," Meera teased, sipping her drink.

Abhishek smirked. "Can’t help it. My girlfriend’s stunning."

She rolled her eyes, but he could see the faint blush on her cheeks. Victory.

"Anyway," she said, changing the subject. "Virat Bhai called me earlier."

Abhishek groaned. "What now?"

Meera grinned. "He asked if we wanted to come over for dinner this weekend."

Abhishek frowned. "That’s… suspiciously nice of him."

"Right?" Meera leaned in. "I think he’s warming up to us dating."

"Warming up? Meera, the guy still watches me like he’s analyzing my stats."

"Okay, but he hasn’t threatened to murder you in the last week. That’s progress!"

Abhishek sighed dramatically. "Great. Maybe next year, he’ll actually acknowledge that I exist outside of cricket."

Meera snickered. "Baby steps, Sharma."

The night went on, filled with laughter, inside jokes, and enough flirting to make the waiter uncomfortable.

But just as they were about to leave, things took a weird turn.

As they were walking toward the elevator, Meera suddenly stopped, her eyes narrowing at something across the street.

"Abhi," she said slowly, gripping his arm. "Is that… Virat Bhai?"

Abhishek blinked and turned to look.

Across the street, standing outside what looked like a small, dimly lit café, was Virat.

But that wasn’t the shocking part.

No. The shocking part was that he was standing there with a woman—one that neither of them had ever seen before.

And he was smiling.

Like, actual smiling. Not his usual serious, captain mode expression.

Like, flirty smiling.

Abhishek’s jaw dropped. "Is… is he on a date?"

Meera gasped. "Oh my God. He’s on a secret date!"

They both turned to each other, eyes wide with excitement and panic.

"What do we do?" Abhishek whispered.

Meera grabbed his hand. "We follow him. Obviously."

And just like that, their romantic date night turned into a high-stakes undercover mission.

"Are we seriously doing this?" Abhishek whispered as he and Meera crouched behind a parked car across the street, peeking at Virat and his mystery date.

Meera’s eyes were practically sparkling with excitement. "Of course we are! This is huge!"

Abhishek shook his head. "Your brother is literally the most private person I know. If he catches us, I’m pretty sure I’ll be benched for life."

Meera waved him off. "Relax. We’re being subtle."

At that exact moment, a car honked loudly behind them, making them both jump. Abhishek turned around, coming face to face with an extremely confused old man staring at them from the driver’s seat.

"Uh… just looking for my contact lens!" Abhishek blurted.

The man squinted. "You’re wearing glasses."

Meera grabbed Abhishek’s arm. "Okay, moving, moving!" She dragged him into the café next door, where they quickly found a corner table with a perfect view of Virat.

They watched as Virat leaned in, listening intently to the woman across from him. She was laughing at something he said.

Meera clutched Abhishek’s arm. "Abhi. He’s smiling again."

Abhishek was still in shock. "I’ve seen him less happy after winning a championship."

Meera pulled out her phone. "I need a picture. No one will believe this."

Abhishek yanked her hand down. "Are you crazy? He’ll kill us."

Meera groaned but put her phone away. "Fine. But we need to figure out who she is."

As if on cue, the woman stood up, grabbing her bag. Virat followed, paying the bill before they headed toward the exit.

"Showtime," Meera whispered.

They slipped out of the café and followed at a very safe distance.

But then—Virat suddenly stopped.

Abhishek froze.

Meera froze.

Virat slowly turned around, his sharp captain’s gaze landing directly on them.

Busted.

Meera reacted first, laughing way too loudly. "Oh wow, Bhai! What a crazy coincidence running into you here!"

Virat crossed his arms. "You’ve been following me for the last fifteen minutes."

Abhishek considered running but realized there was no escape.

Meera, however, was fearless.

She grinned. "I mean… can you blame us? Who is she?"

Virat gave them his signature unimpressed look. "Not your business."

Meera gasped dramatically. "Oh my God. She’s a secret girlfriend, isn’t she?"

Virat pinched the bridge of his nose. "Meera."

"Bhai."

A long silence.

Then—Virat sighed. "Fine." He glanced back at the woman, who was watching with amusement. "This is Anika."

Meera’s jaw dropped. "You have a girlfriend named Anika and didn’t tell me?!"

Anika laughed. "We’re… not exactly labeling things yet."

Abhishek raised an eyebrow. "Yet?"

Virat shot him a warning look. "Not. Another. Word."

Meera, however, was on a roll. "Wait, wait. How long has this been going on? Does Mom know? Does anyone know?"

Virat exhaled. "No. And I’d prefer to keep it that way."

Meera and Abhishek exchanged glances.

"Oh, we are so telling everyone," Abhishek muttered.

Virat glared. "Sharma, I swear—"

Meera grabbed his arm. "Relax, Bhai! We won’t tell… yet."

Virat looked skeptical. "What’s the catch?"

Meera grinned. "Dinner this weekend? You officially acknowledge Abhi as my boyfriend without acting like you want to throw him into a lake?"

Abhishek blinked. "Wait, what?"

Virat stared at her. "You’re blackmailing me?"

Meera shrugged. "More like negotiating."

A tense pause.

Finally, Virat sighed. "Fine. But if you breathe a word of this to anyone, I’ll make sure Abhishek’s batting practice is hell for the next month."

Abhishek gulped. "Noted."

Meera grinned triumphantly. "Pleasure doing business with you, Bhai!"

Virat just shook his head and turned to Anika. "I told you my family was insane."

Anika laughed. "Oh, I like them."

Abhishek groaned. "Great. Now we’re encouraging this."

As they walked away, Meera elbowed Abhishek. "See? Aren’t you glad we followed him?"

Abhishek sighed. "I hate that you were right."

Meera beamed. "Get used to it."

But just as they were about to leave, Abhishek’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen.

One unread message.

From an unknown number.

"You think Aarav was your only problem? Think again."

Abhishek’s stomach dropped.

Something told him this wasn’t over.
