Chapter 4
Unnatural forces
I glanced at Finn in shock.
"Where did he go?" I asked my eyes wide.
"Are you asking me that? The man is a werewolf!" Finn said incredulously.
It was then that it dawned on me: a man had turned into a giant wolf before my very eyes. I felt the earth shift under my feet as I swayed dangerously to the side. Next thing I knew, I was consumed by darkness.
"Santana, open your eyes, come on!" Someone said angrily.
I forced one of my eyes to open expecting to be totally blinded by light but it was completely dark. I opened the other eye. It was still dark. Had I fainted?
"Finn?" I whispered.
"What?" He snapped angrily.
What was he so mad about?
"Did I pass out?" I asked trying to sit up. Finn didn't even try to help me.
"No, you were horse riding." Came the sarcastic response.
I groaned realizing we were still outside in the dark at the exact same spot I had been standing. "You didn't move me?"
"No." He said finally reaching out his hand to help me up. "Mum and dad were going to start asking questions." Finn stated with a small frown,
"Oh." I said simply and started shaking the dust off my clothes. I still felt a little woozy but I wasn't going to lie on that ground again.
I stood up straight trying to get a grip on myself. I released a breath. I had to stay calm. Keeping my mind determinedly blank, I glanced up at Finn and found him studying me closely.
"What?" I breathed.
"Are you okay?" He asked concern etched on his face.
I glared at him for a second then started marching angrily towards the house. Why had he not told me that he was a "seer" ? He probably knew I was a "guardian" but he chose to not to tell me.
The jerk.
All the confusion that had been breaking me down slowly in the past days could have been avoided if only he had told me. What a jerk!
"Santana." He said catching up with me. "Are you mad at me?"
I snorted but said nothing as I continued walking. Why wasn't this property smaller? I might hit him before we got to the house.
He was my brother, the one who should always have my back and he kept something like this from me. I wanted to turn around and slap him but he was bigger than me.
"Wait, Santana." He said grabbing me by the arm. "Let's talk about this before we get inside."
I stopped and glared at him. "Oh, now you want to talk? Alright, let's talk." I drew an angry breath. "You knew about me, didn't you?" I asked my eyes daring him to deny it.
"Santana-"
"Didn't you?" I hissed.
He sighed. "I wasn't sure. All the stuff I thought I knew was just guessing. I had no proof." He justified himself.
"Still, you should have just told me what you thought." I stated.
"Uh huh and you would have totally believed me." He scoffed.
I lowered my eyes my anger subsiding. He was right. I wouldn't have believed him. I would have said he was losing it.
"Fine." I conceded. "What else do you know?"
"I know that a bunch of weird stuff is about to happen in the next few months." He shrugged.
"What's going to happen?" I asked sharply my voice a little squeaky in panic.
"I don't know yet." He frowned deeply as if he was concentrating really hard.
"How does your...thing work?" I couldn't think of a word to call it.
"You mean my gift?" He smiled lightly. "I honestly don't know but I sometimes dream events before they occur or I see something like a vision when I'm wide awake. It just comes." He explained.
I could tell he took his 'gift' quite seriously. "When did it start?"
"As long as I can remember I have always had it. I never told anyone though." He replied solemnly.
Wow. I had no idea I had this. Unusual things hardly happened to me. I wouldn't call it a gift. It wasn't a gift and it had the potential of destroying my life and my family's lives. I didn't want to meet anyone who was out of the ordinary. It wasn't fair that this had fallen on me and my brother.
"What about you? Did you know anything or feel anything?" Finn asked interrupting my pity party.
I took a long moment to answer him thinking about my response carefully. I shook my head slowly. "No. Not until yesterday, nothing strange has happened to me. Or at least that I know of."
Silence followed my words as we both considered this new information we had acquired.
"Oh God, Finn what do we do?" I asked in a small voice that made him close the distance between us and hug me.
"I promised you that I would stand by you no matter what happens and I meant it. Let's stick together for now and try to figure this out." He said sounding mature.
"What about mum and dad? Shall we tell them? What shall we tell them?"
He was silent for a minute. "Cedric said we shouldn't involve them for now so let's just act normal."
If our parents had been keeping this huge secret from us, we were going to have a huge problem. "Okay, I agree." I said with a nod.
He released me with a sigh. "Come on before they start looking for us."
We walked silently to the huge house and sure enough mum was just emerging from my room.
"Ah! I was just looking for you." She said with a slight frown. "Where were you? Your daddy told me you had a friend over." She frowned harder as she said the last part.
"Er...I...we..." I stammered then looked at Finn who looked perfectly composed for help. I always had a tough time lying to my parents.
"We were showing Cedric the property." He said.
"Yes. We were." I confirmed.
"Well, who is he?" She asked eagerly apparently also excited that a guy had come to see me then she turned to Finn. "And why were you being the third wheel?"
"I was chaperoning! I thought you would thank me!" He cried incredulously.
"I don't need chaperoning." I put in deciding to go along with the act but in the event that I do ever get a date, I wanted Finn to know that I did not need chaperoning.
"She doesn't." Mum agreed.
"Mum! She is just a babe in the woods."
"A what?" I asked with a frown. "Who talks like that?"
Mum rolled her eyes. "Come, it's time for dinner." She started down the stairs pulling me behind her. "Your father and I are very curious about this guy. "
I glanced back at Finn as a plea for help but he merely shrugged with a playful smile on his lips. The last thing I wanted right now was to sit with my parents and lie about a werewolf. What I really wanted to do was question them on how we ended up like this. I wanted to know everything they knew and why they hadn't told us sooner. But I managed to restrain myself from directly asking them. Maybe if I was subtle they wouldn't figure out exactly what I was getting at.
Finn probably sensed what I was trying to do because each time I tried to bring up anything about it, he would immediately change the subject occasionally giving me warning glances. Well, maybe I should just forget about it for tonight and after I talk to Mr McLain tomorrow, I would ask them.
I tried not to bring the issue up again for the rest of dinner but I noticed that dad kept throwing wary glances at my brother and I. I wanted to ask him about it but maybe I was the one who was just being too watchful.
After dinner I went upstairs immediately and locked my door. I paced around for a few minutes trying to organize my thoughts but I made very little progress. I then decided to google 'Guardian'.
Too many irrelevant results materialized so I narrowed the search to 'supernatural guardians'.
Leader.
Protector.
Advisor.
Figurehead.
The same words kept swirling around. A leader? Me? Damn! I didn't want all this. This wasn't the life I had planned for myself. Why did I have to be a stupid Guardian?
I held my head in my hands trying to fight back tears of frustration. I took deep breaths. One. Two. Three. Four. Five.
I breathed out.
Tomorrow, I would go talk to the damn teacher who had appeared to mess my life up and find a way to get myself out of this.
I slammed my laptop shut.
Getting into bed, I settled for a restless night characterized by the dream and I woke up the next day feeling tired and I was late so I skipped breakfast and rushed straight to school.
Lola was nowhere to be found.
I left a dozen messages on her phone but I got no response. So I was on my own to face the hostility of the world. I never got used to how much I was hated.
I spent the day grinding my teeth to prevent myself from launching at someone's throat and as soon as I got free time, I ran to Mr McLain's office.
I knocked softly.
No response.
I knocked again, still no response so I turned the door knob and peeked inside.
My jaw dropped.
What the hell?
The office had been wiped clean of Mr McLain's existence. There was only a desk, a chair and a window. Nothing else. And it was spotlessly clean.
No.
Was I in the correct office? I glanced at the office number. C12.
I had not made a mistake.
So where was he?
Had he run away?
I shook my head as I closed the door.
What the hell?
He has run away, hasn't he?
Coming up here to mess up our lives then he leaves? This is how he wanted to play it?
I stomped down the corridor ignoring the weird looks i was getting. I headed straight out of school towards the parking lot each step seemingly hiked my anger up by a notch. By the time I reached my car i was in full blown fury.
Taking my phon from my bag, I dialed Finn's number.
"Santana."
"He's gone." I told him as soon as he picked up.
"Wow, Santana, calm down. What voice is that?" He said sounding awed.
"What the hell are you talking about? I said Mr McLain is gone! He left." I told him again.
There was silence at the other end of the line.
"Do me a favour," he finally spoke up, "while you are this mad, don't talk to anyone. That voice will shake someone up seriously. Now, are you sure he left?"
I frowned at the comment about my voice but I chose to ignore it. "His office is all cleaned out, Finn. I can't believe it." My voice broke. It was because of panic.
Finn was silent for a moment. "Where are you now?" I told him. "Don't move I'm coming there now." He said.
"No I think I'm gonna go home. I had only one class left and it was history but the idiot teacher chickened out. Why would he do that though?" I frowned deeply in an effort to fight back tears.
"I don't know, man. But okay I will meet you at home then. I'm right behind you." He told me and I cut the connection with a deep sigh.
So did this mean it was all over? And I will never know what would have happened if Mr McLain had stayed. I got into my Range and backed out of the spot I was parked at and I headed out.
Well at least maybe now I was free of the obligation of being Guardian but I would probably die of curiosity.
This was the second day I had skipped school before it was time to go. I probably had more detentions than I could attend in one life time but hell I was a senior I didn't care.
I stepped harder on the gas and just then a man jumped out of the street right into the middle of the road!
In panic, I fumbled for the brake pedal and hit it the exact same moment the bumper of my car came in contact with the man.
He fell down with a sickening thud.
I screamed.
I jumped out of the car frantically and ran to the front.
"Ohmygodohmygodohmygod...." I was mumbling.
He groaned.
"Sir? Sir, are you alright?" I asked ignoring the small crowd that was starting to gather around us.
If he was dead...
It was then that he turned with a grin.
My temper flared.
