*Eli's pov*
I couldn't get a wink of sleep.
The smug look on Thomas' face when he saw Steven's hand on my thigh haunted me all night.
He wasn't going to tell anyone, would he? He said that he wouldn't but still, who knows what that filthy rat was capable of?
Someone knocked on my door.
"Mr. Golden? It's time for school," chirped the housekeeper.
"I'm awake," I croaked, slowly getting out of bed. I washed up and changed before heading downstairs. Our chef had prepared fluffy pancakes drizzled with homemade syrup, decorated with fresh raspberries from the local market. Bio, just like my mom had demanded.
My parents were at the table, eating. Dad was reading his morning newspaper with his usual scowl, and mom was with busily typing something into her laptop.
"Good-" but my mom raised her hand to silence me. She had her other hand pressed against her ear.
"Yes, I can schedule a meeting on Thursday. Is five o'clock okay for you?" she asked in her sharp, professional tone, speaking into the Bluetooth earpiece. There was a pause and then she smiled. "Perfect! I'll see you then."
She pulled the earpiece out before looking towards me.
"Goodmorning, sweetie," she said, returning to her sweet motherly tone. My mom had wavy blond hair and fair pale skin, tall cheekbones, and a diamond jaw. She was beautiful, and if she wasn't my dad's secretary, I bet she would have been a model.
"Goodmorning," I smiled back, giving her a peck on the cheek. I looked towards my dad whose eyes remained in his newspaper.
"Did something happen?" I asked.
He started complaining about how one of his business partners got into a scandal, something about taking advantage of younger girls, but my dad didn't care about the last part. What bothered him was that his partner wouldn't be able to participate in the new project that they were launching which meant that time and money would be wasted.
"Don't worry, daddy, I'm sure you can find another business partner to help fund the project. Besides, if it doesn't work out, you've already invested some money into your wine companies," I said in a calm, sweet voice. "Your partners in China will probably be interested in working with you. You'll do great, you always do."
My dad finally looked up at me and smiled.
"You're right, Eli," he grinned. "I am great, aren't I?"
I nodded. He laughed. My mom kept typing furiously into her laptop. It was a normal morning for the Golden family. When I finished eating, a maid came to clean up my plate.
"Would you like Lee to drive you to school?" Dad asked, but I shook my head.
"Steven's coming to pick me up."
Steven was my childhood best friend and our families were close since they were business partners. Daddy was fond of Steven and mom loved having him around, but none of them knew about our relationship.
My parents, as well as Steven's, would freak out if they knew that we were dating. They'd either send us to a mental institution, one with a good reputation, of course, or they'd make us copy down the Bible and go to church to confess to our "sins".
Being gay was a big no-no in both households. So we kept it a secret.
"Oh, and daddy?" I asked, picking up my bag.
"Yes?"
"Can you buy me another bike?"
He raised his brows but didn't look up from his papers. "Okay."
He didn't ask why.
I left the house and saw Steven's jet-black car waiting in front of my mansion gates. I couldn't help but smile when I saw his face, opening the door and hopping into the passenger's seat. His eyes, which was under his burgundy short hair, brightened when he saw me. He had a high-bridged nose with a scar imprinted between his eyes from a football accident.
Steven leaned over for a kiss but I quickly stopped him.
"Security cameras," I whispered, pretending to fix his collar to make it seem less suspicious. He sighed heavily but pulled away.
"Right."
We drove out of the gates and once we were far from my house, he slipped his hand into mine and gave me a gentle squeeze. His rough hands wrapped around mine. My fingers were so slim and frail that he could probably crush them if he squeezed, but Steven was always gentle with me.
"Is something wrong?" he asked.
"Hm?"
"You were fiddling with your fingers," he noted, pulling my hand to his lips and planting a kiss. A blush worked up my face and I rolled my eyes. Steven was a hopeless romantic. "You always fiddle with your fingers when you're nervous."
"He saw us," I mumbled.
"Who? You mean that creep who stared at us in the cafeteria?" he snorted. "He won't do anything to us."
"How do you know?"
"Because," said Steven. "I don't know his name."
"So?"
"So, that means he's a nobody," Steven deadpanned. "And no one cares about a nobody. He could spread the most scandalous rumors and no one would care."
I frowned at his harsh words. "He isn't a nobody," I mumbled, fiddling with my bangs. "His name is Thomas."
"And my name is Steven."
I pulled away from his hand and slapped his strong arm. He pretended that it hurt just for my sake, just like he always did. But I could feel my fingers burn from the impact.
"This isn't funny," I hissed. "We're in big trouble if he spreads rumors. You know how are parents are."
"Babe, relax. I'll talk to him if you're that worried."
Steven and Thomas having a conversation? I shivered at the thought.
"No, don't," I mumbled.
"Baby, look at me."
"You're driving," I growled.
Steven sighed and pulled over, turning towards me. My arms were crossed over my chest, glaring at him. I was in a bad mood, but I wasn't angry at Steven. Though, I still liked to pretend to be mad just so that he could pay attention to me.
"Is it just that Thomas guy that bothers you or is there something else?" he asked, his voice softening.
I didn't answer, averting my gaze.
"Baby-"
"Do you think I'm a rich snob?" I grumbled. I couldn't believe that I was asking him this and I couldn't believe that Thomas' words actually stung. Why should I care about what he thinks anyway? Steven was right. He was a nobody. I didn't even know that he existed until I crashed into him, so why did his words bother me so much?
"You're definitely rich," smiled Steven. "But you're not exactly a snob."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "You're supposed to tell me that I'm not a snob, period."
"Then you're not a snob," Steven said obediently and I rolled my eyes.
"You think I'm a snob, don't you?" I groaned.
"You like to be spoiled," he slowly, being cautious with his words before I got upset again.
"I like pretty things, that's not the same thing."
"You're right, it isn't."
"Steven-"
"My spoiled little baby," Steven chuckled, leaning over to kiss me. This time I didn't push him away. He pressed his lips against mine and I opened my mouth, giving him access. His tongue was warm and tasted of peppermint, and my arms twisted around his neck. I whimpered when I felt his hand trail up my thigh, his lips traveling down my neck.
"Did you break up with Payten?" I whispered, tilting my head to the side while trying not to moan.
"Hmm?" More kisses. But that wasn't the answer I wanted to hear.
I pressed my hands against his chest to look into his brown eyes.
"Someone told me that you and Payten were making out in the hallway the other day. Are you two dating?"
"Of course not, I'm dating you."
I glared at him and he sighed, pulling back into his seat.
"It's just a cover-up so that you and I don't look suspicious."
"So you're cheating on me," I growled.
"It's not cheating if you know about it and it's definitely not cheating if I don't have feelings for her. It's just so that no one will think that, you know, that you and I are dating."
Just because I was still in the closet, didn't mean I liked sharing my boyfriend.
"No one will suspect anything if we're careful," I protested.
"Eli, I love you, but you're not exactly the most masculine boy out there. People are going to sense that we're together. It's already bad enough that the girls at our school think that the entire football team is gay for each other. They're making these weird ship names. You know me the co-captain of the team, Omar? Yeah, well apparently he and I go by the name 'Stomar'," He then raised his brows when I didn't laugh, then sighed. "You want us to tell the entire school and our parents that we're not the perfect little heteros society wants us to be?"
I flinched, frowning. "No," I admitted.
He planted a kiss on my forehead.
"I don't have feelings for her, it's all just an act," he promised. "I love you, Eli."
He waited for me to say it back.
"I love you, too."
He smiled and started driving back down the main road. I stared out the window, still fiddling with my hands.
