Chapter 44: State Your Price

Prior to completing their hospital admission procedure, Fang Xinxin had informed him of her identity. “Director Gu, there’s no need to stand on ceremony with me.”

She lifted the apple in her hand. “I could only bring this along while visiting you. To be honest, I’ve invested all my money currently and don’t have any spare cash. I didn’t want to cause trouble for myself by borrowing from anyone. I hope the two of you won’t laugh at me.”

She would never tell him that she was poor.

The chauffeur, Gu Guanqing, was moved by her gesture. “To think that Miss Fang thought about a driver like me. You’re not someone who respects the rich and steps on the poor. Your sincerity alone is more than sufficient for me. Please give the apple to the director.”

She smiled. “After so many years of friendship, I’m sure he would much prefer to share the apple with you.”

Gu Linyuan watched Fang Xinxin, his eyes bright with admiration. “You’re right.”

He glanced at his IV drip. “Miss Fang, although your gift is light, your heartfelt sentiments are more than enough. Since it’s inconvenient for us with this IV drip, could I trouble you to wash the apple?”

His words indicated that he was accepting Fang Xinxin’s sincerity.

“Of course.” Fang Xinxin opened her bag and retrieved the fruit knife. She entered the bathroom and washed the apple and the knife. She came back and peeled the apple before cutting it in half. She handed one half to each of the men.

Crunch, crunch...

The two of them really took the apple and ate it.

As Fang Xinxin watched the two men who were already in the second half of their lives, she could not help but feel some sympathy for them.

Gu Linyuan noticed her kind gaze and asked her with a smile. “Miss Fang is a giant among people. Your investment surely isn’t small. I’m sure your difficulties will only be temporary.”

“Thank you.” I invested a grand sum of thirty four dollars.

“I will transfer the money as soon as possible to you, as promised.” Gu Linyuan looked at her searchingly.

He felt that this young woman was very mysterious, but she did not seem to hold any ill-intentions toward him. “Miss Fang, you asked both of us to remove the batteries from our phones. Could it be that the person who tampered with my car is someone close to me?”

Fang Xinxin was expressionless. Trying to get information out of her wasn’t an easy feat.

Gu Linyuan’s expression was serious. “I’m sure that news of my accident has already spread. If they are after my life, it’ll be much easier for me to find them after they have let their guards down. You’re trying to help me, right?”

His tone was certain.

Fang Xinxin nodded. “After interacting with Director Gu for a bit, I feel that your character is good. I wanted to make life a little convenient for you. Take it as a greeting gift from me.”

“This greeting gift is invaluable.” It wasn’t as simple as the sincerity of the apple. Gu Linyuan looked at her knowingly. “You seem to know more about this.”

“Not bad.” Fang Xinxin did not deny this.

“Right now, I’m sure Director Gu is most interested in the identity of the person pursuing your life. You have two choices.
