Forever After All: Chapter 41
Forever After All: A Billionaire Marriage of Convenience Novel
Iâm oddly impatient as I wait for Elena by the entrance of the restaurant. I told her Iâd take her to the opening of our latest restaurant, and she told me sheâd meet me here. I smile to myself when my limousine pulls up to the curb. I walk up to the passenger door and open it, my breath catching when I see her.
Sheâs wearing a stunning black dress that hugs her figure beautifully, but itâs her eyes that get to me. Itâs the way she looks at me like she and I are the only ones that are in on a secret.
âYou look beautiful,â I tell her as I help her out of the car. Elena smiles at me, and my heart skips a damn beat.
âYou donât look so bad yourself,â she says, her eyes roaming over my body. âThough I think youâll look even better on top of me tonight.â
My eyes widen in shock and Elena smirks in satisfaction. Sheâs getting more and more brazen with the things she says to me lately. She loves provoking me, shocking me. I grin at her and pull her closer, kissing her right in front of the restaurant. The flash of dozens of cameras go off at once, and I hold her a little closer.
When I pull away, Elena has a torn expression on her face. I lean in and brush my lips over her ear. âThat wasnât for show,â I whisper. âThis is.â
I kiss her again, slowly, until she melts against me. My heart is racing by the time I pull away again and I shake my head. âIâd better stop,â I murmur. âOr Iâll be giving them a real show.â
Elena laughs and I offer her my arm. I donât remember the last time I felt this way. Iâm excited for a date⦠with my own wife.
Elena freezes when we walk into the restaurant, and I follow her gaze. I spot her father and the rest of her family at one of the tables. Matthew has his arm wrapped around Jennifer, and she looks up at me, our eyes meeting across the room. I expected to feel something, but instead thereâs just⦠nothing. Iâve held onto her for so long, letting her go feels freeing. In hindsight I donât even understand what I saw in her. Part of me feels like it isnât her I was so upset about, but rather, the betrayal itself. I spent years convincing myself that I wouldnât end up like my mother, but I did. I smile to myself and Elena tenses next to me. She attempts to pull away from me, and I hold her even closer.
Matthew stares at me, and he looks annoyed at my lack of reaction to seeing him with Jennifer. Even the last time I saw them together I was more concerned with irritating Matthew than I cared about hurting Jennifer. Itâs only now that I realize that. I grin and press a kiss to Elenaâs temple, enjoying the way his hand fists into a ball.
âElena, Alexander Kennedy,â Alaric Rousseau says, nodding politely. He calls a waiter over and asks for two more seats, and Elena tenses. âYou must join us,â he says. I look at Elena, but her expression doesnât give anything away.
âFather,â she says, nodding at him. She doesnât acknowledge the rest, and a small smile tugs at my lips.
âCome, come join us,â he says. âHow have you been?â
She freezes, and I can tell that sheâs caught between the love she has for her father, and the hurt sheâs still trying to heal from.
âIâm good, father. Weâre on a date, so we cannot join you today. Perhaps some other time.â
âNonsense. You must join us.â I see the calculative glint in his eyes, and it makes me more determined to take everything from him. Elena wasnât worth a dime to him until news about us reached his ears. Iâll be damned if he uses her in any way, ever again.
âNo,â she snaps. âI was trying to be polite,â she says, looking around at the countless faces turned toward us. âBut since you canât take a hint, let me remind you of the words you spoke when I left home, and then again when I begged you to help me save my motherâs life: Iâm no longer part of your family. And quite frankly, Iâd rather eat shit than sit with people thatâd happily let my mother die.â
I try my best to bite back a smile, but I canât. Eat shit? A low chuckle escapes my lips and I nod at Alaric. âThe lady has spoken,â I say, leading Elena away without a second thought.
The waiter leads us to a table by the window, and even I have to admit that the view is stunning. I pull Elenaâs seat out for her and she glares at me. âAre you sure you donât want this seat?â she asks, her jaws clenched. âYouâll have a better view of Jennifer from here.â
I raise my brows and bite down on my lip to keep from smiling. Itâs crazy, because usually jealousy irritates me, but on Elena it merely amuses me.
âAre you going to sit down or do you need me to kiss the hell out of you until your knees give in?â I ask her, hoping sheâll challenge me further.
Elena huffs and sits down, her gaze trailing back toward her father. She looks so incredibly hurt, and I donât know how to make it better. I brought her a small present, but Iâm not sure if even that will cheer her up.
The waiter brings us champagne, but Elena doesnât even notice him. Sheâs lost in her thoughts, a pained look in her eyes.
âI know it isnât the same, but my family is yours now, Buttercup.â
She looks into my eyes and nods. âHey, why do you even call me Buttercup?â she asks, clearly not wanting to talk about what just happened. Very well.
âYou really donât remember? Iâve called you that since you were about six and you were obsessed with The Powerpuff Girls.â
Her cheeks turn bright red. âYouâre kidding me, right? You named me after the most violent one of the three? I donât have a violent bone in my body. Iâm clearly Bubbles.â
I smile at her outrage. âButtercup is also the bravest and the most headstrong, baby,â I say, pacifying her.
She glares at me, and I canât help but laugh. I lean in to kiss her shoulder, and she narrows her eyes at me as though she just thought of something, her gaze suspicious.
âHey, whatâs my name in your phone programmed as?â
She grabs my phone, but itâs password protected. She lifts her brow in expectation.
âDonât tell him, but itâs Lucianâs birthday backwards.â
Her eyes widen when she successfully unlocks my phone.
âNo way. Lucian would love this. You know youâre his hero, right?â she tells me.
I shake my head in denial. âMaybe once upon a time I was, but these days we arenât that close anymore.â
Elena smiles at me and shakes her head. âThe way you protected him when all that stuff with Marcus went down? Iâm not sure what was going on when I wasnât part of your lives, but right now youâre his hero.â
I smile at the thought of that. Elena has managed to bring me closer to my own family. Itâs something I never asked of her, but she did it nonetheless. Thatâs just who she is.
Elena uses the search function to find her phone number, and I see her outrage when she finds out sheâs programmed in as Buttercup Kennedy. I chuckle as she changes it into Wife.
âThat reminds me. I donât think weâve taken a single selfie together since getting married.â
She opens my camera app and poses, gesturing to me to join her. I wrap my arm around her and smile at the camera, watching in amusement as she pulls a few funny poses.
âGod, youâre so cute,â I murmur, kissing her cheek. She manages to capture the exact moment and saves the photo as my screensaver before handing my phone back to me.
Elena takes a big sip of her champagne and I take the envelope I prepared for her out of my pocket. I slide it toward her with a smile on my face. âIt isnât much, but this is for you.â
Elena opens it curiously, her eyes widening when she realizes what it is. She gulps and looks up at me. âAre you serious?â
I nod. âYes, of course. I always told you the shares I was acquiring are yours. I have no need for them. We still donât own a majority shareholding, so you canât use these to boot your father and brother from the company just yet. Iâll need another two months or so to make that happen. But once I have the rest, theyâre yours too. Do with them what you will.â
âWhy would you give this to me?â she asks, sounding shocked.
I move my chair closer to hers and wrap my arm around her. âBecause I promised you Iâd give you back everything you lost, Elena. I never said I wanted anything for myself.â
âBut what about Matthew? Didnât you want to take revenge? What about Jennifer? Alec, these shares are worth millions.â
I smile at her and lean in to kiss her, my lips lingering on her. âItâs punishment enough that heâs marrying her. I canât, in good conscience, make the man suffer even further. Besides, youâre my wife. Whatever is yours, is mine. You are mine.â
Elena smiles, but her smile is uncertain. âI saw the way you smiled at her when we walked in. I was standing right next to you, but she was all you could see. I donât need you to lie to me, Alexander.â
She looks away, but I see the way she forces a smile onto her face. The insecurity she tries so hard to hide. I worry that Iâm the one that put it there, and that the damage Iâve already done is permanent.
