Chapter 36
Mend My Heart
Theodoreâs P.O.V
Sometimes, I truly underestimate my ability to not be discrete, which is funny because I usually know how to keep myself in check but whenever Iâm around Maya itâs like my better judgement flies out the window and the first thing that comes to my mind tumbles out of my lips before I can stop it.
I just told her that Iâm in love with her, like I was stating my order at a Starbucks outlet.
It wasnât in the least bit romantic but I just figured that I really had not time to beat around the bush. The desperate urge to have her had been fuelled much yesterday when I saw that poor excuse of a âboyfriendâ sheâs been hanging around lately. I was jealous, Iâll give him that, but I was very certain that he was nothing more than a distraction; someone to keep her occupied before I came back into the picture.
Now, you can label me as an arrogant ass but Iâm really not that. Iâm just a man on a mission to be with the one woman who made him believe that, despite experiencing a tumultuous heart break, true love can swoop in a fix all of that. Bloody hell, Iâm starting to sound like a cheesy cartoon character.
After my confession, she hadnât said anything and her lips pressed into a grim line. Iâll admit, it wasnât the reaction I had been anticipating, but I honestly donât blame her either. After all the mixed signals Iâd sent her when she stayed at my mansion, it would only right for her to be confused. I planned on clearing up all that confusion, but not this morning though.
I went to her apartment just because I wanted to see her. After yesterdayâs encounter, I wasnât quite satisfied with how our conversation had ended and my finding out about her dating this Brian guy. Once I returned to my office, I requested a background check be done on him by my friend Quentin. I was not at all pleased to find out that his information was squeaky clean. Spotless. Not a single account of misdemeanour, not a single hour spent behind barsâ¦absolutely nothing. He was indeed an ideal guy for her.
Now, I donât normally go for women who are taken but, in this case, Iâd make an exception. Because he is just temporarily filling a space in her heart, I already knew that I owned it. Shit, what have I turned into? There is nothing at all appealing about a pompous and possessive guy.
The clock struck six fifteen when I entered through the cast iron gates leading to my Malibu beach house. It wasnât anything too fancy but it wasnât exactly quaint either. I figured that since I had a lot of business this side of the globe, I might as well buy a piece of property I would call my own rather than staying in stuffy albeit five-star hotels. Iâm a man who deeply values privacy.
âThis is your place?â she asked in awe, her eyes widening as she roamed her eyes over the expanse of the house and adjoining private beach.
I nodded. âYes. Iâm here a lot so I bought a house to stay in whilst I make my frequent business trips,â I responded and then exited the car to open the door for her. I extended my hand to her, which she took without much fuss.
Intertwining our hands, I locked the car and began to lead her to the entrance. I know this is going to sound even cheesier, but her hand fit perfectly in mine. Iâm not a touchy-feely person, but just this once, Iâll allow myself to explore this new side of the horizon. I guess all my therapy sessions over the last couple of months helped. I wasnât totally open to it at first. Who the hell feels comfortable talking about their feelings with a complete stranger? And for me just to be honest was a rather difficult feat, but alas, Dr Milton helped me quite a lot. I will forever be grateful to her.
Entering through the glass door, I immediately led her over to the kitchen. We didnât have much time together so I wanted to make the most out of this occasion. I usually stayed here alone, but a maid would come and handle the chores and the like every now and then. I did my own cooking and could even tidy up if I wanted to.
I discarded my jacket and placed it on one of the barstools. Maya eyed my every action curiously. âAnd why is it that you brought me hereâ¦into the kitchen specifically?â she inquired, almost sarcastically. I guess it was just in her nature.
I smiled at her and took off to aprons from a nearby hook. âYouâre going to teach me how to make pancakes,â I beamed at her and she blinked twice.
âYouâve got to be kidding me! You wanted me to make breakfast for you? Why canât you just watch a video on YouTube or something!â she exclaimed. I went over to her and put the top of the apron over her head. Her sweet scent invaded my nostrils, almost knocking out my senses.
By now, my smile was a full-blown grin. âAnd why would I do that when youâre the master? Iâd rather learn from the best rather than settle for mediocre standards,â I quipped with mirth but all she did was glare at me before stepping away from me.
She knotted the apron behind her back, while I followed suit. âWhere are the ingredients?â she blew out in defeat and I mentally danced triumphantly. Hey, she could have told me to go to hell but she conceded. Itâs the simple little things that make a relationship stronger; thatâs what I want from her, a relationship.
I showed her were all the utensils, ingredients and appliances were. She got straight into it and began to show me one by one, the measurements needed⦠to the last detail. But I wasnât paying much attention to that garbage. Iâll be frank, I didnât give a damn about the process but I did care about who was carrying out the steps. When I attempted to make my own batter, I purposefully got everything mixed up and the way she reprimanded me for it was cute.
She grabbed my hand and directed it over to the bowl. âI donât understand how a business mogul like you cannot understand a simple concept such as this. I told you that you donât beat the batter like youâre murdering it, be gentle. If youâre not gentle, youâll ruin the consistency and it will not taste good,â she huffed, and began to whisk the contents with my hand.
Iâm not sure if she was aware of our position; I was standing behind her, whilst she held my hand and the other one was on the bowl. It could be considered intimate and her proximity made my heart thump faster than usual. After she thought the consistency was right, she turned around and looked up at me. âSee, was that so hard?â she said askance, eye brow quirked.
I abandoned the pancake making process and slid my hands around her waist. âNot at all, since youâre such an excellent teacher,â I murmured softly and she gulped at my action.
âW-what are you doing?â she asked in a rushed stutter, her lips trembling as I stroked her hips with my thumbs. Panic filled her eyes but underneath it, was a strong flame of desire. She wants me just as much as I want her.
I dipped my head so that my lips were a whisker away from hers. âWould you stop me if I kissed you?â I whispered, looking straight into her mesmerising honey-coloured irises. Maya stilled for a second before she pressed her lips onto mine, shocking the living daylights out of me.
Letâs just say I hadnât been expecting for her to be the one to take charge over this kiss, but she blew my mind. She was just as fervent as I was, if not more. I felt her arms automatically wrap around my neck as her finger tips got lost in my perfectly styled hair. I didnât hesitate in deepening the kiss by moving her lips apart with my tongue, simultaneously using my hands to lift her up by the thighs, making her wrap her legs around my waist. Not words could describe how heated the moment was getting with each passing second.
Placing her on the counter top, I detached my lips from her and began to attack her neck with feathery kisses, to which she responded with not-so-subtle moans. Shit, this is getting so serious. I donât think I can hold myself back any longer. âMaya, love, as much as Iâd like to take you up to my room and finish this sweet encounterâ¦I donât think this is something the both of us should get into right now,â I resigned with a sigh, having regained my composure, creating a bit of distance between us.
I think she had also woken up from whatever daze she had been in, because a look of horror washed over her face. âOh my gosh! I kissed you!â she shrieked and covered her mouth, which was swollen from that passion filled smooch we just shared.
âIâm not complaining,â I said nonchalantly and got a slap to the chest, which was quite painful not going to lie.
She glared at me. âThis is your fault! You lured me into your house and seduced me with your stupid, sexy charm and now Iâve cheated on my boyfriend,â she spat at me, pointing a shaky finger in my face.
I scoffed. âI did not seduce you, and for the record, I genuinely called you here because I intended on having breakfast with you. But, since you added yourself to the menu, who was I to refuse such a generous offer?â I remarked with feigned innocence, and she shoved me away before jumping off the counter altogether.
She readjusted her skirt which had ridden up her thighs and ran her hands through her hair. âLetâs just finish up with the pancakes so that you can take me to work,â she huffed indignantly, but I didnât miss the way her eyes flickered over to my lips. âAnd this time, keep your hands to yourself, Mr Duke,â she warned, making her way back over to our abandoned ingredients.
âI think you ought to keep your lips to yourself, Miss Knight,â I joked. She ignored me and began to pour the batter onto the girdle.
And so, we finished prepping up the stack of pancakes, served with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, some Greek salad and orange juice. As you can imagine, we ate in silence but I could barely focus on the simple task of eating. My mind kept replaying the kiss we shared not even thirty minutes ago. Judging by her stiff posture, she was just as affected by it as I was.
I placed my utensils down. âThere is something I need to tell you.â
She didnât bother to look at me and kept playing with the cherry tomatoes in her plate. âWhat are you waiting for? Just say it now.â
I shook my head. âNot now. I donât think we have enough time. I would like to have dinner with you to have the talk.â
âYouâre kidding right? I agreed to have this breakfast with you because you blackmailed me, and because of that we almostâ¦did the deed right here in your kitchen. And now you want us to have dinner too? What could possibly go wrong?â she sniffed satirically.
I slid my hand across the table and covered hers. âMaya, please. Iâm begging you. I really need you to hear me out and only then you will be able to decide if you want me in your life or not. Whatever decision you make after that, Iâll respect it and do as you wish. So again, will you have dinner with me?â I implored sincerely, something the old me would have never done.
With a sigh, she nodded her head. âFine. Iâll have dinner with you.â
