Chapter 30
Her Dad’s Best Friend
âYeah, okay.â Her eyelids flutter as she blinks rapidly. âSo I knew that I was pregnant after we broke up.â She sticks her spoon in her coconut surprise.
âWhy didnât you call me? You had my phone number.â
âI tried to call your office first.â
âAnd?â
âYour secretary knew that we had broken up, but I told her that it was urgent. So I talked her into sending the call to Jack instead so he could make the call.â
âAnd?â The strawberry frozen yogurt tastes too sour.
âJack heard me out. We came to an agreement. He paid me every month, and in return, I didnât ruin your life. Youâd already said goodbye to me. I knew that you didnât want to be around me. As long as the checks kept coming, everyone was happy.â
âHow much was he sending you?â
She names a number that makes me whistle.
âThatâs a lot of money.â
âSilence is expensive.â She waves her hands. I notice that sheâs wearing a lot of jewelry, various rings, bracelets, and a necklace that looks like it could be in a window display case. âAnd weâve never gone without anything. Ryanâs had everything Iâve ever wanted for him.â Her tone is defensive, and I donât know why.
âYouâve taken care of him, then.â I donât say anything about Ryanâs disconnect from reality. If he is my son, thereâs time to fix it. If heâs not, I donât have to care.
âIn every way but one...heâs never had a father.â
I can see that, but I say, âYou might fix that today.â
She stares at her hands. One of her rings is catching the sunlight and throwing rainbows on the wall. âI have to tell you something.â
âWhat?â
âHe might not be yours.â

âThen why did you...â
âBecause Jack was willing to pay me to keep my mouth shut.â
âSchrodingerâs cat.â
She nods. âI didnât know, and I didnât want to find out. It could be your baby. But it wasnât hard to replace you.â
âYou were with someone right after me?â
She blushes slightly. âMore than one.â
I sit and let that sink in. âSo thereâs not even a 50% chance that Iâm his dad.â
âItâs lower than 50%. Itâs lower than 25%.â
I could be pissed, but Iâm relieved. Iâm glad now that this is all coming out, because it means that I could still be free to marry Camilla and leave the past alone.
Marciaâs crying a little bit, although sheâs pretending that sheâs just wiping her nose. I can see some women in the frozen yogurt café with sympathetic eyes. Then they turn to me. Their stares turn icy. They think that Iâm making her cry, and I donât know how to tell them that sheâs crying because of what she did, not anything Iâm saying.
âIf youâre not the father...â
âYouâre not going to get those child support checks from Jack anymore. Canât you hunt down the real father?â
