Chapter 37
Her Dad’s Best Friend
I know that my da d will be surprised, but itâll be good to see Uncle Iacopo. Yeah, my thoughts after I hit puberty were a little less pure, but he stayed the same. A few more gray hairs, thatâs all. My dad gained weight when he got older, but Uncle Iacopo still probably has a six pack. I blush a little bit, since I shouldnât be thinking about him that way.
I unlock our front door and call out, âDad! Uncle Iacopo! Iâm home.â
I hear the sound of glass shattering. âDad?â I walk deeper inside of the house, towards the kitchen. Uncle Iacopo is sitting at the table, drinking a demitasse of espresso. My dad had a glass of orange juice, but now itâs shattered on the floor.
âDonât move. Iâm getting a broom.â I open our broom closet and get out a broom and a dustpan. I carefully collect glass and dump it in the trash.
When Iâm done, I say, âWow, I knew that my visit was a surprise, but I didnât know that youâd be so startled.â I lean in to hug my dad, but heâs as pale as he gets. âArenât you glad to see your daughter?â Dad might be distant, but I know he loves me. Just not in the way that makes him constantly check on me. He doesnât care about my day-to-day life very much.
âKelly, would you like to have a seat? Maybe a shot of espresso?â
âIâll just take some orange juice, but I can pour it for myself.â I go to the fridge, take out the carton, get two glasses, and pour orange juice into them. I give my dad one. Heâs still frozen in place. Thereâs sweat on his forehead.
âWhatâs wrong, Dad?â
âMaybe I should start,â Uncle Iacopo says. âYour dad and I have been talking about your future.â
âUm, okay.â I didnât know that he was interested in my future. I never had to endure well-meant career advice from Uncle Iacopo. Tons of people loved to tell me how to live my life, but not my favorite âuncle.â
âYour father has run into a little financial difficulty, Kelly.â
âDad?â I turn to him. âWhat happened? Are you okay?â
âJust fine, pumpkin.â He forces a smile. âBut I wonât be able to pay for college anymore.â
My heart sinks. I have had to work hard enough to keep myself afloat. Without anything from my dad, Iâm not going to be able to go to school. I might have to take time off to save up.
âBut I have a solution,â Uncle Iacopo says smoothly. âIâve offered to help.â
âOh, Uncle Iacopo, thatâs very kind, but thereâs no way that I could possibly accept.â
âIâm going to insist,â he says. His voice is hard this time. I hug myself, my arms crossed in front of me. I see his eyes settle on the cleavage created by the position. The expression on his face doesnât belong on the face of a man that I call uncle.
âI canât take money for nothing,â I argue. âIâll just pick up another job.â And take a smaller course load. And take forever to finish. Simple enough.
âItâs already done. Iâve paid your tuition until you graduate. I established a trust with you as the beneficiary. The money will go directly to your school.â
âThatâs very kind, but Iâm still not accepting it.â
âThereâs nothing to accept. The bursar is more than happy to receive any kind of money. You donât get to give it back.â
âWhat do you want in exchange?â I tilt my head.
âYouâre moving in with me. And Iâll decide when to let you go to school.â
I hear my dadâs swift intake of breath. His face is sorrow-twisted, as if Uncle Iacopo just said, âYouâre going to die.â
âI canât move in with you.â I laugh, shaking my head. âI live at school. And what are you talking about, youâll decide when I go to school? Iâm already enrolled for this semester.â
âYouâll live with me,â Uncle Iacopo says. âAnd youâll have a driver to take you to and from school each day when I decide to let you go. Your father has been...lax about your security, but itâs important to me.â
âI donât need a driver.â
âThen I shouldnât mention that heâll be your bodyguard.â
âI donât need a bodyguard!â I snap at Uncle Iacopo. âListen, I donât know why my dad agreed to this, but I wonât. You can stick your bodyguard where the sun doesnât shine.â
